Gonna read this to my dad, who told me as a kid to always live below your means (unless you legitimately cannot due to something outside your control, like medical dept) Man has been telling me to stop getting plushies for a long time, but doesn't stop me (I'm a disabled dependent) cuz they make me happy. He recently had me get a real credit card to build up credit. I was told in no uncertain terms I do NOT spend a penny more than I can afford.

She's literally just making her problems other people's problems. Serious question: if she's using a credit card to fund (not just pay) her facial, does she tip the worker who gave her the facial? I don't go to things that require tipping if I can't afford to tip. Jobs that earn tips are usually working class jobs.

That comment is extra funny, because I live in a midwest city (not even a very talked about one or even the biggest in my state) and it's surprising meeting the amount of people who have moved here from Cali and NYC because they wanted to own a home or even a ***spacious apartment*** (real words one person said). You need this 🎤 I just turned 40, and it hit me in a big way that I absolutely *do not* want to put in 20 more years working the type of hours I do. If you had asked me when I was 25 and just starting out, my answer would have been very different - I didn't see the need to start saving for retirement until I was maybe in my mid 30s. I thought I'd be happy working till 60 so I would have all the time to save. Thankfully company policy forced me into the retirement plan about a year into working here. These ladies have time on their side, if they knew just how far a little money allowed to compound for 20, 30, 40 years would take them, they wouldn't waste it.

First they ruin minimalism and now "demure" is a dirty word all of the sudden... I had a few years of something similar to doom spending after my mom died suddenly. I lost all ability to have delayed gratification - because I might be dead by the end of the week. That book that just came out? I had to have it immediately. The yarn I saw? Grab. The advent calendar? Eaten on the first day, because I might not be alive to open the last door. It took years of mindfulness and awareness to step away from that abyss of self-destruction and desperation. And of course, all those purchases never helped, because they didn't touch the underlying cause of the issue. I wonder what the underlying cause for those tiktok'ers are... Most shocking for me was that 29-yo with 38k in debt, part of which was for some random vacation. How does one even look towards the future with such a dark cloud over one's head?

The all or nothing mindset is what’s making this a problem. You absolutely can treat yourself and still save. Treating yourself doesn’t have to be coffee everyday, it can be a couple times a week, or heck, save by making it at home yourself. You can go on a vacation, but it doesn’t have to be the most expensive. The word of the day is moderation. My only subscription is KZbin since it’s what I’m on the most and I share it with my bf. We order out twice a week. I could/should make it once a week, but for where I’m at right now? Very mindful. Bills are still paid, very cutesy. No credit card debt, very demure.

Balance! I have a bad relationship with money. Grew up poor and parentified. So I save and save, and then feel incredibly guilty “treating” myself. People see me as a spendthrift. Don’t eat out a lot, don’t get coffee, nails/haircuts, no car etc but that’s the only way I can take trips and go to concerts. But even there I budget. Hostels, economy flight, public transport, make my own food and just do a couple meals out when traveling. I like camping and hiking as hobbies. I now support my mom (who is in her 70s). So you best believe I’m maxing out retirement accounts, trying to catch up for the years I was undocumented and working shitty jobs. Got my undergrad fully paid for, no student loans, no credit card debt. I have no one to save me, so I have no option but to hustle to make sure I’ve built my own back ups

Ikr i am financially anxious after a few years of being a buy-everything-I -want type. I make financial plans, investment strategies, I keep track of every euro I spend. I rarely enjoy anything. I stay far away from subscriptions and stuff and all those little daily spending you could do if you just wanted them. I realized today, when I realized I was considering if I should buy a drink because I was very thirsty and about to faint from my low blood pressure, that I was going too far. I have started to hate spending money, I feel ripped off everywhere, and it is not healthy. I need to find balance. I bought a nice lippy and a face mask, and a nice cappucino at the best coffee shop. In fact I found my new fav lipstick this way. Shopping should feel like a fun experience and not like a pressure to get rid of all your money. The less you go to town to shops, the more special it feels. Internet has changed this a lot. Now we spend money every single day. Not normal. We used to go to the "big" city by train only a few times per year and then visit every shop and spend only the cash we had. Those were the days. Now with PayPal i can buy anything anywhere and it's exhausting. I told myself to at least not buy anything on weekdays.

Your videos have seriously come at the best time. Over the last year I've watched so much overconsumption and personal finance commentary content and it has all been super helpful in shifting my mindset from the now to the future. Living in survival mode for so long had me only looking at what I could do with my money TODAY and not looking at what I need it to do for me TOMORROW... I made terrible financial decisions throughout my 20s and have finally learned from them all. Overspending is a problem for me so I've really had to learn how to still enjoy life while missing out on some of the WANTS I have in order to be able to cover my NEEDS. I'm back in school to get my degree and a higher paying job, and with the tools and advice in your videos I will be able to make smarter financial choices when I get to that higher income. For now I will do what I can with what I have and will continue building my savings and getting out of debt. Thank you so much for sharing what you know

It's honestly scary how people take credit cards so lightly! My rule of thumb is if I can't afford to pay for it by debit card, I can't afford to buy it with my credit card lmao. My credit card is more for emergencies or non-emergent but unanticipated situations, if I want to buy something out of budget, I save for it. At 16 I got my first job and managed to save up $16,000 over the next two years. I spent almost all of it on food, movies, boyfriends, and clothes. When I went to college at 19 I had to buckle down big time to afford it. 20 years later I REALLY REALLY wish I had put $10,000 in a high yield savings account at least. Would have had a ton of money by now. I barely remember the movies I watched and the food I ate, but I do remember all the OT I worked to afford the junk I wanted 🫠

I watched a video the other day where the girl said that the most important thing to remember to be grateful in life is realising you can't always be happy, because putting that expectation takes you away from properly enjoying anything without thinking "does this actually give me joy?", which then makes you depressed instead in this constant chase for happiness. I feel our generation has been pushed this narrative that happiness is the most important, but honestly being present whatever the circumstances is better for our mental health in the long term. So whenever these (mostly) girl go off and say "who cares about them debt im going to Max my credit card to make me happy", it really means that they are just in that perpetual chase for the "happiness" they believe they deserve every waking second.

And there's NOTHING you can do. Same thing if married and share a joint account but at least don't do it if dating. As someone who had a doom mindset cause my dad suddenly died at 19 and i had this feeling that "something was going to get me" (use to call it the "eyes in the treeline") ...i get it. but at the same time, its not acceptable. you cant just yolo it all. cause life just keeps going. you keep surviving and waking up, unless you do something drastic to stop that from happening. So in order to break the bad mindset i use to do little gambles with myself like "if i dont die today, i cant think about dying tomorrow" and then two days later it would be "cant think about it for 3 days" and so on and so on until it was "you cant think about this ever again, because look how far youve gotten and look how much better you are"

I had both phases of life. I spent spent spent when I was younger, lived abroad, went to the concerts, spontaneously went where life carried me but to be fair I did that when I still had parents as a safety, and I was blessed for that. When I was fully off safety, I flipped into save mode. I think a good goal is balance between the two. I don’t regret spending money on experiences that made me who I am today, but I also didn’t spend to zero even though I had a safety net.

I’m at that phase where I’m going to be off my parent’s safety soon so I’m trying to find work with benefits and be a bit more mindful of spending. In college, I went a bit crazy because I had my first part time job and was able to pay for rent, fun stuff, and even some bills back home. I had family savings and scholarship money to cover tuition up until my senior year. I was also working less during my senior year so my family and I struggled a lot more then. Had to get into some credit card debt to pay for necessities and I wished I had planned better during my junior year. Living at home has put a lot less strain on me and my family. And I’ve paid off my debt. Resisting the urge to spend too much on going out of shopping, and saving up to get a teaching credential, which while cheaper I’ll have to finance myself this time around.

I mean if it is self diagnosing maybe they can spend the money on therapy. For other stuff it might make more sense to avoid a diagnosis like Autism because having that diagnosis can lead to medical staff treating you in an infantilizing way or trying to take away your agency.

Now you know I sound like a cranky old lady here, but do any of these doom spenders, who just don’t think they’re going to be around soon, have any kind of information written down for their next of kin? If you *really* think you’re going to die soon, you should have a notebook with all your pertinent information (passwords, PIN numbers, bank accounts etc) all set up and ready for whoever will be taking care of your estate after you pass. It will take months for someone to clean up after you, and that’s made somewhat easier if that person can actually log in to your online banking and whatever. (There’s an actual book called In Case You Get Hit By a Bus that details everything if you need a reference material to make sure your bases are covered.) Have you even set up a Legacy Contact in your phone so the correct person can get into your phone where all your bill stuff is (since your fingerprint will presumably be buried with you)? They say people don’t write wills and things because no one wants to think about their own mortality, but if you’re so convinced of your own mortality that you’re not paying off credit cards, then you should be planning for your imminent demise. {Shrug}

I doom spend but at least its on house stuff now. Not like decor, but on projects that need to be done, it was a complete mess when I bought it. I got hail damage this spring so insurance is covering new siding so obviously I've spent the last several weeks picking out new windows to replace the leaking single pane windows while we're at it. Most of the projects I'm picking up stuff for aren't necessary or need finished immediately, they're definitely wants (like sconces for the bedroom) but I recognized a long time ago that I spend when I'm stressed so I've made it a point to focus on house things. Instead of spending $100 on clothing that will eventually be donated I'll spend $100 on fencing materials because I have 3 dogs and live 50ft from a highway. Any projects that I can't get done can be resold for a small loss, and any that do add to my daily quality of life (not worring about my dogs escaping a temporary fence and getting hit by a car or lowering my utility bill) and add a small amount to my property value. It's not a perfect fix, but I do spend less because its somewhat permanent decisions and I have to think through everything more. I will add, my only debt is my mortgage so I'm not going into debt for these purchases.

I think one contributor is the rise of social media. Our perception of what is needed to survive is warped. We used to only see the houses of the people in our community and the pictures in the magazines (but you knew to. A certain extent that the magazines weren’t realistic). Now we see influencers who are supposed to represent the average person but create this “aesthetic” life and over time it makes us feel like we should be living our life like that otherwise we must be poor. Our perception of normal consumption becomes warped. So if we just lived within our means we would be living a more normal lifestyle but many people feel like it’s not enough to survive because they want to feel like the influencers

Yeah, I wish I could go back and fix a lot of my stupid money mistakes that I made when I was younger. But I never did this "doom spending" where I am literally running out of money on purpose. These young people are going to have soooo many regrets when they get in their 60s and realize that they will NEVER retire. Many of us with a little bit of money to our name worry about retiring also, but at least we are on the right path and been on it for a while so we will still be able to enjoy our senior years. But these young kids that are literally pissing their money away and going into debt like crazy will be paying for that for the rest of their lives. It's sad to see that, but it will become the norm with the Gen Z generation to be working into their 80s and 90s if they want a roof over their heads. Cause social security may not even be around anymore by then plus companies nowadays don't have the pensions that they used to have. So they will need the money that they invested to retire. They talk about how they may never retire. Well, they won't with that kind of mindless spending, that's for sure.

The issue is theres so much going up in price, that a lot of people think that everything is going to crash and burn so they don't bother making connections to help them stay a float or savings. I don't mean to use other people, but to work together and help each other like with roommates or family you live with.
