That's partly why I hate work events and do not attend them. I don't tell anyone I work with anything about myself that is not necessary. Like I had to take my mom to the hospital etc, that's as much depth as they get.

I’ll go to a work event if it’s during work hours but if it’s after work no thanks. Always good to share a little bit about yourself but never anything that can be brought up later on.

I started a new gig in August and this younger kid half my age started two weeks later, he was definitely a narcissist gen z kid who couldn't put his phone down and had nothing really interesting to say. He was fairly honest from what I could research, but what I found also lead me to know he's got issues. He didn't have a car, had a fat girlfriend who drove him to and from work and had enough audacity to insult my sports car because it's automatic. We played bumper fork lifts essentially, and if I accidentally screwed up his work I helped sort him out but he didn't return the favor and once he blamed me for something to the boss related to that which I didnt' do so I got him to self immolate. My two cents though to you, being younger than myself...don't stay anywhere too long, always look for better opportunities elsewhere, there's no reason to wait 15 years for a better spot to open up.

I’ll usually give a job 2-3 years before deciding if it’s worth staying at or not. Appreciate the advice and support.

Some of these tips apply to the trades, there are many predators one has to watch out for. The good ole boy attitude runs rampant at my workplace but fortunately a lot of the experienced guys who like their base level job(we get 3 pay raises annually), are there to help the younger guys excel. They’re just very few. I’m a book worm and nerd(read my kindle in my plentiful spare time) I naturally stick out so have to do my due-diligence to blend “with the herd” as you say and socializing with the tenured guys helps the most.., to not seem as much a threat… especially to the covert narcissist. They’ll try to trash you every chance they get

All good points. You definitely have to protect yourself from those types of people.

nah it is to sound harsh, I have had way to many bad encounters with those at work. Yes you should be cordial and maintain positive work relations but when they try adding me on facebook or wanting to go to the bar that is a block and a hard pass. Those that seek friends at work have clearly failed in life if they have to bother co workers to hang out with cause no one else will

I have had cases where people I worked with did end up becoming friends of mine outside of work, but it is definitely the exception to the rule. It's usually best to keep business and your personal life separate.
