Why Your Dishwasher Stinks and How to Fix It

So, a few months ago my dishwasher suddenly developed the dreaded wet dog smell I've always read about, but never had the pleasure to experience. Until it happened to me. I tried EVERYTHING!!! I cleaned the filter, I cleaned the arms, I scrubbed the tub, I bought every cleaner imaginable, I even bought the Miele power cleaner which helped but after one or two wash cycles the odor came back. I was so desperate that one day I emptied out an entire bottle of bleach into the dishwasher and ran an empty cycle. I figured this was sure to kill ANY bacteria or dirt still lingering in the internal plumbing. That worked for exactly two wash cycles, then the odor came right back! I was on the verge of throwing out my 3 year old and VERY EXPENSIVE Miele which I LOVE TO DEATH, until I finally found out the problem. I'm sharing this solution with as many people as possible that are also experiencing the same problem and are at their wit's end. It turns out that many people incorrectly install their dishwashers by running the outlet hose flat on the ground and then simply connecting it under the sink. THIS IS WRONG!!! By doing so, the waste dirty water FLOWS BACK into the dishwasher during the final rinse cycle, which is what leads to that wet dog odor. The correct way to connect the drain hose is by using what's called a "high loop", please look it up on KZbin as they're several videos that show you how to do this. A high loop PREVENTS dirty water from flowing back into the dishwasher, thereby eliminating the bad odor. It takes less than 10 minutes to do and since doing this my problem with smelly dishes has become a thing of the past. NO MORE wet dog smell! And it was so simple!!! Please spread the word!

Thankyou for this. For 3 months I couldn't figure out where the stink was coming from. I opened the dishwasher to see stagnant brown dirty water puddled at the bottom of my dishwasher. It is brand new never used whjch means this has been escalating for almost 1.5 years. I ran the dishwasher through a whole cycle, put some pinesol at the bottom, and squeezed 2 half lemons into it. I then let it sit for about an hour then soaked everything up and wiped the interior till it was dry. The drain hose connects directly to the garbage disposal and the line goes along and then down which means the garbage disposal has been sending stuff down to the dishwasher. I pulled some of the drain hose out so I can high loop it. I will explain this to the apartment maintenance because I don't think they have a clue.

But I use those cleaners. I do everything you said, but about every 3rd wash I have to hand wash my dishes because they stink. And when you put warm food on them🤮. My appliances are brand new and I hand wash dishes. Infuriating. What are the manufacturers doing putting plastic parts that they KNOW hold odor?!
