chlorophyll is what tastes like grass.....if you let it dry out before it oxidizes, it locks in the grassy flavor......chlorophyll must oxidate before it drys because once it drys it hardens and will not continue to oxidate even when rehydrated. Grassy flavor has very very little to do with the nutrients you are feeding it other than to say this effects ethylene gas production postharvest ......Ethylene is the ripening hormone. Nitrogen gas preserves things and as the nitrogen gas leaves the cannabis it helps to preserve the dry matter, extending shelf life. the Shelf life of cannabis that has high brix sap from additional nutrients in fact stays fresh longer ,,preserving terpene flavors ........SLOW DRYING IS AS IMPORTANT AS PHOTONS WHEN IT COMES TO CANNABIS

In my early grow days and overtime I eventually figured out the major reason for a heavy hay smell was either premature plant/harvest or dried too fast. The good news with the latter I found is that the hay smell will eventually dissipate overtime in curing

U are 💯 right my friend. Mine where nice and full of crystal and smelled amazing but I mite have cut it too early at 11wks but I'm in nys growing outdoors. So after I hanged I only had a heater and a fan. One day it was really moist the next day was so dry on the outside. I've got what I had sitting in paper bags hoping the smell will leave. It's mostly all dry but the buds smell Hayie. Should I jar up soon and can't I use like orange peels or whatnot?

Okay, for the new folks: There are two stages post harvest. Stage 1 is the drying stage and the directions printed above are right on the spot. Stage 2 is the curing stage. This is the stage the materials go inside a mason jar and are burped to allow for proper development. The total time depends on the farmer, but usually the drying stage takes 12-14 days and the curing stage can go from 14 days to 5-6 months (just depends on you life path). The temperature for curing is the exact same as drying. Most of us keep our materials in the dark during both of the phases, because light destroys materials. If you are impatient, in a rush, or dont follow directions very well, this is the way to learn how to do that if you want to succeed further in life. This will also teach you about human (plants are very closely related to way human interaction should be done) interaction.

Could also be some strains just don't turn out that good in the end no matter how well you cure. Especially when lots are growing from seeds, seeds are like a box of chocolate u never kno. Then some strains are so strong in their profile its really hard to screw it up. Good weed is like a good wife, when you find that one it's like all others mean nothing to you.

I agree but on one point. Seeds. If your getting TRUE BREEDING stock i.e. a stabilized cultivar then you can bet money that there will be great uniformity. Now in todays market we are being flooded with the exact opposite. Say no to to corporate seed breeders. Get back to finding Breeders that stabilize t there seed. I recommend Humboldt Seed Company as a great starting point. 😎

Lol.. people that can't grow will blame genetics.. If you can go to the store and buy tomato seeds or any other seeds and they all turn out the same. You think that is magic or weed is some different kinda plant? No just stabilization of the seed and good breeding.. We should be drying our buds for at least 15 days but 21 is the mark to try and hit. 60 degrees 60% humidity for 16 days is a good rule of thumb …. That hay smell comes from the buds drying out to quickly and losing most of the terpenes ( essential oils) it also allows the chlorophyll to be left behind in the leafs…. Slower is better with drying and curing is not as important as people think IF the drying process is done properly.

After the initial chop and hang for at least 8 days, branches were hung inside a wine chiller at 60* for about 10 days. The buds stay very green and fresh, turned dense, hard and very sticky. After fine trimming and putting in jars with humida packs, its the only way I will ever cure again.

And if I understand correctly you first dried for 8 days in a room/ tent and only after those 8 days you placed it in the wine cooler? Were the flowers already dry after 8 days or in between dry and wet?

I hang plants until the stems starts to get brittle then do final trim. At that point it has the hay smell then I put it in ziploc bags over night and it gets wet again then I take it out and let it dry more and do this process over as many times as needed takes around 2 to 2.5 weeks. After that no more hay smell

I noticed if I harvest too early after the last watering, I will get the hay smell. Allowing the soil to dry out but not allowing the root ball to dry out is the perfect time to harvest, IMO. I think what is happening is by allowing the plant to transpire a majority of its water content prior to harvest, when the initial drying begins, the plant loses fewer terpines through evaporation being there is less water to evaporate.

Here’s a big loving nugget of wisdom that’s been used for probably thousands of years, HARVEST ON THE FULL MOON, another little nugget to try, harve right before sunrise. The moon is pulling out ALL the goodness that the girl is hiding in the soil, and shedding all her powers into the flower, unlike when it’s during a waning period, when most her energies are going into the root system. Full moon= full peck production, plucking during waxing isn’t the worst thing but it’s best to plant or start seeds, especially during New Moon and onward. In the gardening veggie world, you plant ROOT veggies during the Waning period aka After full moon, days after that is…. Peace Growmies

My thoughts on the topic are from a newer grower's perspective. I've grown for about a year and I am currently waiting for my third grow to near harvest. I used GH flora trio for my first grow, switched to veg+bloom by hydroponic research for the second grow, and now using their VBX formula for my third. There is a fourth 'micro' grow I did during the second and third with some organic soil but I've noticed the dry/cure to be the same between the two. My second harvest had a slight hay smell and the first, third, and the 'micro' organic grow all didn't have a hay smell. I believe the smell comes from a combination of sources. It typically starts off as a grassy smell just after chop. It develops into a hay smell as it dries more. This is the same with real hay, it's just overgrown grass, so when it's cut it gets the same grassy smell, and turns into it's own hay smell over time. When the chlorophyll degrades and breaks down it has to off-gas with the remaining moisture in the plant. If the moisture off-gasses before all the chlorophyll has broken down you'll be stuck with a hay smell. The only harvest I've had smell like hay, dried in almost 5-6 days. All my other harvests that have smelled great dried in a much longer timeframe, nearly 14-18 days. When you slow down the off-gassing of moisture you allow the chlorophyll to leave the buds with the moisture. I believe it also has to do with the over fertilization of cal/mag(mainly magnesium.) Without the excess magnesium there'd be less chlorophyll being able to be produced. I don't believe it to be the Nitrogen in particular, as there are industries, cannabis included, that use nitrogen to keep their product "fresh" and I've not once had a hay smell from a nitrogen packed jar. So to recap, I believe it to be over-fertilization of magnesium, and drying too rapidly. If you can push the dry time out to 14-18 days, with ~%10 moisture remaining in the branches, it's ready to go into a terploc bag and never be touched again until ready to smoke.

From experience I would say for sure drying to fast( not paying attention to RH levels in your room ) is the main culprit. I actually made a drying chamber out of a 2 shelf on wheels using thick black plastic and an newer humidifier. I now dry for at least 7 days and omg what a difference it makes. I set the humidifier at 60% and roll the chamber into my coolest area in the house and let it go. F'ing fantastic results now. Huge differnce.

Its a wire rack shelf using the top and bottom shelfs. I lined the inside with thick dark plastic sheeting. Made a floor kinda like a grow tent has, just in case of water leak from the humidifier. I used 1 usb fan blowing down from one corner and have the humidifier in the other corner. I can actually hang the plants using a small string and a clip and slide them around or switch things positions quickly from outside to in, etc. Its working fantastic. Like I said I just roll the thing to the coolest part of the house/apt. Its super effiecient and doesnt even really need looked after. Let it go a week and come back. Oh, I have a second usb fan on the bottom blowing from the fan side towards the humidifier. Creating a loop of air.

Here in west Tennessee in the 80's, there was a good percentage of poor quality smoke. The Mexican and Columbian was often the best to be found. As the 90s began, we started getting bud that was grown in the hills and mountains of East Tennessee and Kentucky. A world of difference. One year we were smoking 2 or 3 percent thc bud. When October arrived, so did some really potent, sweet, beautiful chunky buds from east Tennessee, with names like comatose, zombie, you get the idea. Pushing 15%+ thc.

Yes I've heard the same and try to mimic my environment just like it when harvesting. I dont have alot of options for where to hang dry my bud so I just use the flowering closet with the door cracked a bit with a fan going on low outside of the closet as I found if you put it on the floor In the closet with it, it drys out to fast. Now this may be true(about fan) for a bigger grow but my closest only like 3×3×6 so no need for the fan in that small area(and never point directly at your herb). So I have learned to just crack the closet door a little and turn on the ceiling fan in my room with a cool mist humidifier going and keep humidity around 60-62% as the temp is a little warmer 65-70° in the house and if I could would put it in a much cooler spot if possible but I always close the vents from the heat running in the house and try and always crack a window as that fresh air coming in and out helps out alot too..!!! Just my humble way of dry/curing at the moment but still dialing it in as it's an art form in itself. Now when there ready to be bucked off and put into plastic totes, paper sacks, turkey bags, cardboard box what have you this is when I find it the hardest! Do I put in totes first then Turkey bags then jar em. Or put into paper sacks then turkey bags then jars.....its all a guessing game really unless you have ALOT of experience harvesting! So what I'm doing from here on out is getting those damn small hygrometers to put in jars or bags with the buds so I know exactly what the humidity is and if they need to be left out or jarred up! Also a must when you get to the jarring stage or atleast for me is getting those boveda humidity packs or wherever you want to get em frm! Happy Growing everyone!!!
@doktorhunggari4415
@doktorhunggari4415 2 жыл бұрын
Your buds will retain the ambient moisture (rH) in the environment they’re in. Don’t overthink this. Those moisture packs can pass toxins into your medicine. Beware! As far as warmer curing temps there are no shortcuts dude! More humidity (>60rh) is an environment for mildew/ mold. Temps above 68f will degrade terpenoids during the “cure”. Curing isn’t just drying, it is stabilizing the metabolites you have just invested 100 plus days cultivating. It isn’t rocket science or a secret. If it costs money there is a scam a foot. Patience is the correct cure for the dank…🙏🔑✌️

Similar to me. My first and only grow smelled incredible, looked awesome under the scope and was super sticky. I had a problem keeping humidity up because I had to dry in the basement where the furnace is. I couldn't keep humidity levels above 30% and the flower dried way too fast, even after washing. The bud was a little crispy after about 6 days hanging and I put it in jars to seal and burp. Surprisingly, I got the tell tale ammonia smell that indicates mold. I ended up tossing about 1/4 lb of flower, maybe smoked 2 joints. It smelled like hay when it got dry. Too warm, too low humidity. Still not sure what the work around is, tbh.

@@danieljackson4266 Rubbermaid tubs can slow down the dry process. I had an environment similar to yours. Cold basement, furnace running, added a humidifier way too late. Impossible to keep humidity up in an open air cold basement. Guys at the hydroponic shop said to put the bud in Rubbermaid tubs. You could put a damp paper towel in there as well if necessary to reintroduce moisture to the buds. Question: I had some serious ph issues during veg. I've corrected the problem with most of the plants and began to flower. I'm 16 days in. Two of my plants maybe too far gone to correct the issues. Would you keep the two problem plants in flower and try to work it out? Or cut em down and get rid of them? Worried about pests and flower seeding from stress. Thanks!! 8 total plants.

Late, but is this happens again: Option 1, cut clones from the plant before destroying. Option two: learn EC and ppm-flush your plant and fix it. Plants are VERY strong and can come back from some serious problems. Wait until the plant comes back to health and then flip it. It does not have to sit under the same lights as your ladies you are flipping. A CFL is enough to be able to seperate her and fix her while the others are being flipped (if you are using a 1 tent system).

Drying during the cure process causes the hey smell. Slowly bring it down to minimum humidity with as few leaves as possible but still enough to prolong the dry, its something you have to get used to. Too manybleaves slows the dry too much and starts the cure too early while too few leaves allow it tobdry too quickly and the cure starts too early. Drying doesn't mean curing.

I don't flush my plants before harvest. And I wet trim all the big fan leaves before I hang it. I'm all organic other than some CalMag. Then finish trim and jar it up. "Burp Lids" work pretty well for small quantities like I grow. The pump creates a vacuum and extracts the oxygen. Had an old friend , RIP, that gave his jars a spurt of nitrogen after burping and then resealed. There actually is some distillation going on with the sugars. That's why long periods for curing offer better flavor. Kinda like aging bourbon. The longer in the barrel under controlled conditions, the better. Great channel. Keep it up.

According to Dr, Bruce, chloroform has a half life of 2 days...so the slow cure gives the plant time to reduce the chloroform. He also says its critical that the buds are dried enough to kill the microbes in the buds n thats why if you jar them to early they get funky. Seemed like my plants go through a HAY smell phase early in the drying process but that fades as time goes on. I shoot for 60*/ 60% rh in my dry room. Seems to work fine.

Salt build ups that haven't been fllushed adequetly is a harshening factor in smoke, let alone smell. You want to slow the dry after about 4 or 5 days of hanging ventilated. This be done by putting in a looselly rolled up acid -free brown paper bag for another 7 days, moving them arpund once a day in a cool dark place with some ventilation but not heavy fans by any stretch like the first 4 or 5 of hanimg it on the dark.

My Experience are several things can cause it. Not letting your plants fade out enough and leaving too much chlorophyll. Drying too fast and/or drying at too high temps. Also frying your plant will kill the terps so if using synthetics don't over feed I use Mills and get great flavor using a light feeding schedule. Wet trimming will also lose terps its best to leave the fan and sucker leaves on while drying. I may have missed a few things but all of those definitely contribute to bad taste and smell in your herbs.

No closet or room for a apparel moving box (about 3 x 3 x 4). You have to get it to dry for about 2 weeks to really work the hay out. I use a closet and a humidifier set to 65% for 2 weeks. I hear water cure sucks, but not as much as what you just experienced. So maybe if all else fails water cure it. But it supposedly kills the taste, but no taste is better than hay.

SOmeone please help...I'm currently dealing with this now..I'm almost positive it wasn't an early harvest problem..My trichomes were starting to get some amber, ones that weren't were milky and I'm on a grow since early June...I did trim the fan leaves off before hanging and started out hanging them in a dark closet...Smell was still amazing...In fact it started to stink my whole house up so I had to put the harvest back in my grow tent with 1 more plant that was still growing to try and control the smell. the humidty in my tent hovers between 45% and 53% with lights on at 78 F...after 2 days of hanging in the tent the hay smell started...Well now that I don't have to worry about odor in the house they went back closet but I'm bummed out that the beautiful smell is gone..This plant had massive buds for a small autoflower and I ended up with a pound and a half wet after the fan leaf trim...Is there anyway to save it? and what should I change to keep it from happening to my last plant I have growing? The yield isn't as big, but the smell is even better and its covered in frosty trichomes. I just wanna have some quality product to show and give friends and family after 6 months of tender love and care....I do feel a bit better about the 2nd plant because now I can use my grow tent specifically just for drying instead of having to have lights on for 12 and not being able to dial in the environment perfectly...Whats most important? Humidity level or tempertaure? Or is it can't have one without the other? I would appreciate any help from the OG's out there.

Lights kill your potency after the plant is no longer living. You can't dry in the bright grow lights or warm. Most important is 2 weeks to get to dry and dark. You need to dry in a closet or cardboard box, something dark. And humidity much over 65% in the 70s risks mold. And mine set at 65 seems to keep it closer to 60 anyway. But I don't think you can get a good result in your grow tent, unless maybe in a cardboard box.
