"Television preacher and one-time Republican presidential candidate Pat Robertson warned on his "700 Club" show Tuesday that he's inclined to run a "full-scale exposé" on a web publication that he refused to identify, calling them a "nasty group" that focuses on "embarrassing conservatives" who appear on television."*
Pat Robertson is upset with progressive Right Wing Watch (or Media Matters) for pointing out all the horrible things he himself says on television. The nerve. Robertson is even threatening a full-scale expose! Which of his words were "twisted?" Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

He didn't say that, what he is rather saying is that she should focus on the positive things in order to be able to forgive because the question was how do I forgive, stop trying to make pat robertson seem like he is giving wrong advice because he was trying to help her forgive which was what she asked for right?

Okay, then Pat is saying she should be focusing on those aspects. Some took issue with when Pat says, "he's a man." That's not sexist either. It's a pretty accurate statement. I wish we had an example of what advice Pat Robertson would give to a man whose wife had cheated on him and was having a hard time forgiving. I'm not trying to claim that his advice would be any different but I have a more than sneaking suspicion he wouldn't be so laxed on forgiving so quickly and easily and he surely like he would hold a woman to a higher standard of moral conduct when it comes to infidelity or anything sexual for that matter.

Pat's advice wasn't all bad... I mean he gave horrendous examples from a distorted fundamentalist christian outlook on gender roles.... but the whole "concentrate on why you married him in the first place" is, in my opinion, good advice to someone who already has their heart set on forgiveness.

I typically agree with a lot of things here, but the wife specifically wrote in asking how to move past that he cheated on her... she doesn't ask if she should, she asks HOW to move on. The comment "well, he's a man" was sexist and crappy. However, the long list of advice he gave was not telling the woman to forgive his cheating for those things, it was telling her to look at the things he does right...

I have never felt the need to defend Pat Robertson before. But in this case he is 100% right. When I was in the Service my (now ex) wife cheated on me. The advice Pat gives is the exact same advice the the Marriage Counselor gave to me. That if you decide to stay you have to focus on the good things about your spouse and forgive the infidelity. Pat did not say that the husband should be allowed to keep cheating. He said that to get over the prior case of infidelity you have to forgive and focus on the positive attributes. Pat says enough that is controversial that we do not actually have to create an issue.

most marriage councilors will tell that to who ever was cheated on because humans are flawed and make mistakes so you can either go through life with negativity or you can focus on the positives and work through the mistakes, example a "relationship is like a house, if one of the lights break you don't go and buy a new house".

Ryan Householder Exactly. The point was that she wanted to forgive him. So keeping that in mind, I don't think there was anything wrong with what Pat said. Who cares who said what? The message is important. Or are you going to ignore somebody's advice just because you don't like him as a person, no matter how good the advice was? It's impossible to discuss with people like that - they don't listen to what you have to say, they will just disagree for the sake of it, even if they actually agreed with everything you said.

I think the main problem is that Pat Robertson didn't offer any help on how to forgive; I mean, she continued to be with him, so she has to be focusing on some good qualities, but giving someone a house and clothes is no excuse to betray their trust. Essentially, Pat just said "ignore it".

Because you can't buy love. And by focusing on the material benefits of being married - this arse hole is suggesting a woman can be bought and that their dependency on a man's pocket is reason to overlook his infidelity. Misogynistic and desperately bad advice on any level.... (Although perfectly in line with the Bible.)
@TheRikuideFurame
@TheRikuideFurame 10 жыл бұрын
elgar104 Misogynistic? Absolustely - it's Pat after all ha. But the point at hand was TYT claiming he had stated that it is acceptable for a man to cheat. If that were so why list reasons (granted terrible ones) to help her forgive/forget. Why would he simply not say "He's allowed to. It's your fault" or words to such effect.
@tonypetrovik
@tonypetrovik 10 жыл бұрын
I personally think both a guy and girl should focus on each other's good aspects and love each other for that. However it doesn't excuse from the cheating from either party and it's obvious and understandable if your partner cheated then you'd be upset. But personally i think if they're truly sorry and promise they'd never do it again (obvious room for skepticism here) then they should be forgiven, but it probably wont get back to what it was.

So, please, tell us, in the CONTEXT of the "callers" question, how would YOU suggest this wife get over an incident of infidelity? Pat isnt sayingthat she shouldnt be upset about the incide t because he provides for her (a home, food, clothing, etc.). What he is saying is, if she wants to move past the incident that IS in the past, then stop focusing on the past, and focus on the present. You know, there is an old saying about "Those who can, do. Those who cant, teach", I would have to add, those who are without a clue, criticize! Tell us, oh, wise Turk, what would you suggest she do?
@TheYasmineFlower
@TheYasmineFlower 9 жыл бұрын
Hello, I am the surrogate Turk of the week. I would suggest she should be absolutely honest about her feelings, and if possible for her even consider a compromise with her husband if he's a compulsive cheater. I would also advise her to make it clear to him that he has severely damaged her trust in him and that he has to work in order to regain it. That shall be his punishment. And if he proves unwilling to comply, she shall kick him out, keep the house (and, if there are any, the children) and tell him to go his merry way, away from her, for she deserves better. Addendum: I would also suggest that you don't simplify, you know, life, for it makes you look like an idiot. Ability is not determined by whether one does or teaches, otherwise every single student in this world would have a problem. If you can not recall one of your teachers who were capable, I would lastly suggest you to seriously question the quality of your education, and also the question whether or not you should sue the responsible institutions of government for not providing you with the quality education you deserve. Regards, Surrogate Turk of the Week

TheYasmineFlower well, just as Pat suggested, if her husband is a "compulsive.cheater", then he should.convert to Islam because Islam makes "cheating" permissible by turning the family unit that God created (1 man + 1 woman) and making in to nothing more than a business transaction with contract and everything. in fact, mohammad even permitted short term temporary "marriages" for his warriors who weelre too far away from home to satisy their uncontrollable lusts (and didnt get enough sex slaves as war bootie) and all these temporary "marriages" needed to cost was nothing more than the cost of a cloak (we call that prostitution, but the permissble proFit of Arabia calls it "holy" matrimony for a night)
@TheYasmineFlower
@TheYasmineFlower 9 жыл бұрын
Robert Austin Christianity is also pro polygamy. Look into it's history and present day Mormons. There is no family unit created by god. First prove that this god exists, and then prove that he created that family unit. Otherwise, don't make claims you can't back up. Marriage originated from a business transaction. It was and still is in many cases a business transaction.

@ParodyVille
@ParodyVille 9 жыл бұрын
Ash i honestly don't believe Pat was justifying the husband's affair and letting him off the hook because he is a man. I can't prove it but i believe he is just saying that most heaters are men and as such, it comes as no surprise that he cheated. I completely agree that heaters are disgusting. There are all types of people out there with differing beliefs and wants and desires and if a person can not be monogamous then they should find a partner willing to go to certain types of parties where it is accepted and common place to exchange partners. Unfortunately for some (the one cheated on), it may be that the cheaters is "in to" the excitement of having an affair and the danger of getting caught. ... Don't take this as an excuse, but rather a possible explanation. After all, there is no excuse and it causes so much pain on the partner being cheated on as well as any children involved if the couple has any.

I would suggest that the husband probably had to pay for the stripper in the hotel room, because he was old, fat & ugly, & his own wife probably did not find him attractive any more. One wonders how the husband would have felt if things were reversed & it was the wife who had cheated & the husband was finding it hard to forgive her. Would Pat Robertson have given the exact same advice to the husband? It seems that often the men expect the women to keep themselves attractive, while the men often "let themselves go", & see no problem in that "double standard".

I think that it wasn't phrased as "to forgive you need to try to stop focusing on the hurt and start focusing on the love that you feel for him and the reasons you were married in the first place" he said "he cheated, he's a man" as in, what did you expect? men cannot control sexual urges and then he goes on to list things that makes the assumption that the man is the sole bread winner of the house and she as his wife obviously does nothing to contribute financially so she should just be grateful that he makes sure she can eat and dress. What he (Pat) was probably trying to say was from a place of love but it was hidden under a fair amount of sexism and that's what people get offended about.

The truth is that sex with another person isn't automatically grounds for divorce nowadays. If I had a wife that I loved with all my heart and she messed up one time, and she was the mother of my children, I wouldn't just kick her to the curb. If it was a good marriage before the betrayal, and she was genuinely contrite and repentant, I would forgive her because marriage isn't always easy and no one is perfect. The important thing is to have someone to grow old with, someone to love for all time. I don't agree with Pat Robertson on most issues. In fact, I think he's off the wall more often than not and over the hill. But here's the thing: even though he handled the question poorly, I don't really think he was condoning cheating. Think about it: the woman came to him for advice on how to move on. His advice on how she could move on was to focus on the positive aspects of the marriage. This is sound advice, because couples need enough positive aspects of a relationship to keep it together and outweigh the negative aspects.

***** If I were married without children and she had sex with a man and he did his thing inside her, there is no way I could forgive that. Not after that. But if I had been married for multiple years and we were raising children, I would honestly be crushed and don't know what I would do. I do know I would think about my children first and foremost. What I wouldn't do is give her a license to cheat. I think that men who do that stuff are sad sacks of shit. Some even get pleasure from it. Those men need to be taken out and shot as far as I'm concerned.

The entire time Pat was talking about "Does he put food on your plate, does he give you clothing, does he take the kids to school" and all that stuff I was just thinking to myself, what if they don't have kids, and she's the only one that works? What if she provides for him and he just sits on his ass all day eating doritos? That would make all of Pat's 'advice' completely useless and would most likely lead to this woman realizing what a loser her husband is and divorcing him. I wonder what Pat would think of that.

+Hugh Donaldson Reallly? And what did he say her husband needs to do to earn back the trust he destroyed in the marriage when he cheated? What is his responsibility to her for breaking her heart? Does he have to do anything besides pay the bills? You don't get credit for taking care of your family, and you don't get a pass for cheating just because you're paying the bills. If he loses his job and she's got to carry the family, does she get a pass for cheating because she's putting food on the table and paying the bills? No. And it's not okay for her to throw the fact that she's supporting the family in his face or expect his forgiveness because she's paying the bills. I think you're the one hearing what YOU want to hear.

It was not Pat's idea to say that you should forgive somebody for cheating. He was just answering the question - how to forgive somebody who cheated on you. He wasn't giving reasons why cheating is OK. I don't usually agree with most things Pat says, but in this case he was just answering the question, and I saw nothing wrong with the answer. I like how out of ALLL of the things he rattles of, things you should focus on that are good about your husband, they all revolve around thing that aren't pertaining to her happiness. There was no "Is he NICE to you" or "Does he LOVE you" it was all about whether or not she got food and shelter, were the kids ok? Does he like the kids? Sure he might, but if he doesn't like YOU then it's not good. As a kid from a divorce let me just say it's not fair to the mom no matter what, they deserve their happiness too. athena conquest "If this Women fed her husband @ home there would no need for Fast Food." You're disgusting for victim blaming like that. First of all, a guy friend of mine has a beautiful girlfriend who begs HIM for sex, and he'd rather jack off to porn in the bathroom. He admitted this to me. I told him "But you have a beautiful girlfriend who loves you, does everything right by you, and is waiting for a fucking marriage proposal. What the hell are you doing?" All he can say was... "when you have pizza all day every day, sometimes you just wanna go out for a burger". Some people cheat out of pure selfishness, and as a means to cure their boredom.

+Joseph Palau It's a pretty bloody big mistake. obviously you haven't tried forgiving someone for cheating on you before. First he blows it off how the guy cheated, he's a man, so what.... ah.... being a man is NOT an excuse to cheat. And then from that premise he expects the only way for the woman to get over it is to ignore her feelings. Nothing about what is required from the man, he doesn't need to earn the trust back, she just needs to suck it up and keep playing happy families. Focus on how pretty he is. It's insensitive advice given on the premise that it isn't that bad for a man to cheat, almost to be expected.
@Vic2point0
@Vic2point0 8 жыл бұрын
tiggerpupify He never once said it was okay to cheat. And by "He's a man" he probably meant "He's a human being, he's going to make mistakes". And while cheating is certainly a huge mistake, it's not always going to be this black and white. If it happened once in a long relationship and overall they should stay together, then she will need to work on forgiving him. And it's *her* saying that; it's not like Pat is trying to convince her to stay with him. She wanted *help* forgiving her husband, and so that's what he tried to give.

Perfect advice, take a look at the positive points of your husband and stop focusing on the negative. The truth be that just about every marriage experiences infidelity, you can still recover from this if you both really love one another. Pat Robinson was very correct in his advice and he is not saying it is okay to cheat but that it has already happened and so stop rethinking it and forgive and move forward.

***** You DO NOT have a rational thought process if you have faith. The definition of faith is belief without evidence. You, therefore, cannot, by definition, use reason as a defense with regard to faith. Why shouldn't religious belief be criticized? Why should faith fall beyond the realm of rational critical thinking? It's a ridiculous proposition to think that everything you experience, every single day, is weighed with evidence, with regard to making decisions, but introduce religious faith into the equation, and all reason and rationale is off limits? I think faith should be scoffed at and those who put faith before evidence ridiculed.

dieCG but the point was, the woman didn't want a divorce. So the advise was good. But people were angry, suggesting that if someone cheats the consequence is automatic divorce. And guess what? Divorce is very traumatic for everyone, especially the children. Also, you make it sound like cheating is just the very worst thing someone can do. Believe me, in a marriage there are a lot worse ways to betray your family. .

+Eethan O'Connell I was thinking along the lines of the same thing, but Preachin' Pat is still wrong. It's true she should focus on the positive things, but ALSO get his sorry ass talking about his cheating on her. And if you know a lot about Preachin' Pat you need to remember that when he says "Does he provide a house, does he make you food, etc..." What he really means is "Does he, the honest and hardworking man, provide everything for the lowly, ungrateful wife that she cannot provide for herself because she is equal to a child?" You gotta read in between the lines with the Old Fart sometimes. Nonetheless, if I were to give the woman advice, I'd say something similar to remember why you married him or try to fall back in love with him.

Not only is America not truly a Christian nation (it was founded on Christian principles, the main one being religious freedom - to include none at all), and while most Americans wojld identify as Christian (I think 80 % but dont qupte me on that), most people (2/3 or 66%) who attend church EVERY WEEK do not know the core doctrine of salvatio through Christ Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. Thats a sad stat that I remember (the 2nd one about 66% not the one about 80%) because that means for whenever one person walks in to church and sits down the person on their left AND on their right identify as Christian but arent saved according to orthodox doctrine. So, again, what does your statement have to do with anything, except she with the rest of the world that you find me attractive :-)

Christanity is a religion designed to make men gay. Why do people pretend to be shock? You have to accept a man into your heart, so accept a mans body into another mans body is homosexuality. Then your told to serve The Lord just like a woman serves a man (makes men afeminate) it is all gay.

I agree with everyone here saying that I think Robertson's words were actually twisted. His intention clearly is being misconceived by the liberals. I think he actually was trying to mean that forgiveness is what really matters in times of harsh reality. Having a positive outlook snd holding onto that seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to say. TYT just proved how the right-wing media twists his words around.

I think his comments were totally taken out of context. The woman came to him for help on being able to forgive her husband. In response his answers were totally revolving around this goal. Christianity claims to be about forgiveness and Pat Robertson was trying to help her to look at her husband in a positive light outside of the adultery issue. If he were to condemn the husband how would that help her desire to forgive her husband. I have to give this one to Robertson.

Looking at this from an unbiased position, Pat was only answering the question "how do you forgive?" Focusing on the positives will make it easier to forgive; not to say that is the right thing to do in the given situation, but it does answer the question at hand.

I can see his words sounding like "Does he provide for you? Then don't worry about it. Shush up." But I also could see it as, "Ok, if you are having a hard time forgiving, especially if he has said he was regretful and asked for an apology, but you're having a difficulty, try starting off by thinking about the good things." I don't know what was going through the guys head, since I am not him, but I can see it going both ways.

"Tell it like it is" should be eliminated from our phraseology. "It" isn't a thing; there is no "it" to tell.

I can see where Pat Robertson is coming from. She wants to forgive him and move on, but she's having trouble doing it. If she wants to get over it, then why would he tell her not to? One of the best ways to get over anger is to stop focusing on the thing making you angry.

What was so hard to understand about this? She wanted to know how to forgive a husband who apparently was sorry for what he did, so Pat Robertson told her to focus on what's good about him and to try and put it behind her. The part about touching his face is for both of them to start realizing again that they can be close. A secular counselor would have said the same thing.

Knightstruth What would also be interesting is your pointing out just where my mistake is. :) Maybe I did miss something. Ok, I watched it again. 3:17-4:52. The context here, presumably, is that he stopped cheating and wishes to get back to normal, since they're going to counseling. She can't get past the fact that he "cheated," not that he "is cheating." Maybe "he's a man" is what set people off, but I can't imagine him meaning this in the context of "we all do it, it's normal, expect for it to happen again." He's saying men have weaknesses some of them give into, not that you shouldn't expect any better. He may have said crazy things in other clips, but he didn't here.

Mogen David Damn it I almost had this written out before the youtube moved on the next video in my history. Okay! Here we go again. The "He's a man!" statement is a big one. He's implying that men are simply predisposed to cheating and it's unfair to blame us for it. "Yup, men cheat, you can't blame em for it. It's like breathing to them." The second half would be his assumptions when he's naming off the things he assumes the woman likes about her husband. Do you live in his house? Does he feed you? Does he buy you clothes? He just assumes that the guy is the breadwinner in the family and the woman is beholden to him for every possession she owns, and her continued survival. Very chauvinistic. Then there's the "Is he handsome?" remark. As if the only reasons the woman might be living with him is either materialistic or physical attraction. Next is the "reach out and touch him" line. Yeah, he quickly throws in "face! touch his face." But there's some other conclusions one might draw for how he's thinking. So his answer to cheating men effectively is: "They are allowed to cheat because without them you'd have nothing. Forgive him and start touching him!" He really didn't say anything that couldn't be taken as chauvinistic.

Pat Robertson's answer is very sound, simply, to have mercy. Focus on the good things, not the bad. Every man has both. Have mercy and quit the mocking.

I knew a Pastor who was offered opportunities with both CBN and TBN he turned them both down said there's no way he'd throw in with a bunch of Devil worshippers claiming to be Christians never really asked him what he meant by that (if he was being literal, or just referring to their errors in Doctrine), but the more I hear about these guys the more I understand.
