That inner voice isn't going to be there forever. You should have a plan for when it stops. Mine stopped and once I realized it was gone, I started taking action. I also didn't realize how much control it had over me.

✨ Summary: - Negative inner voices, known as rumination, are common sources of mental health issues like anxiety and depression. - Anxiety often involves forward-looking negative thoughts, while depression focuses on past events. - Addressing rumination is crucial, similar to treating physical pain to prevent further issues. - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) are effective approaches for managing rumination. - CBT helps identify and challenge negative thought patterns, while ACT emphasizes accepting thoughts without letting them dictate actions. - Reading books like "Feeling Good" for CBT and "The Happiness Trap" for ACT can be beneficial. - Professional therapy may be necessary if self-help methods are not sufficient, with specific therapists based on the approach that resonates most.

AI Summary: The video is about how to overcome negative rumination and how to ritualize shallow work. The speaker, Cal Newport, says that negative rumination is a common problem that can be addressed through therapy or self-help books. He recommends two books in particular: Feeling Good by David Burns and The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris. Rumination can be classified into two types: anxiety-based rumination and depression-based rumination. Anxiety-based rumination worries about the future, while depression-based rumination dwells on the past. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a good approach for depression-based rumination, while acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) is better suited for anxiety-based rumination.

no one said inner monologue is always negative, some people have a metaphorical negative voice but I dont think its their inner monologue, but just bad thoughts

@@AG45. I understand. My comment is an insider one. Cal and I have an ongoing debate. I disagree with Cal that the way I question things and my aim to make sure that I am safe are coming from a negative place and due to depression. You must admit that it is odd for Cal to make content about mental health. He has made content where that is mentioned when relevant but not the focus of the podcast
@AG45.3 ай бұрын
@@Amb.CHHolland no yeah, cal's studies are in computer science and happens to know alot about the psychology of focusing so it is indeed odd for him to cover mental health and, I dont think about this topic alot, but I'll just say what I think, thinking negatively all the time, is not that helpful.

@@Amb.CHHollandthat’s why this is a short video post… he’s answering a viewer question. Never made a whole podcast on mental health.
