Let’s face it. Your life is boring as f*ck. And here’s the biggest reason why... you haven’t taken enough risks. Whether you’re thinking about starting a KZbin channel, asking out that cute stranger across the bar, or moving across the world to your dream city, it’s scary to take a leap into the unknown.
But if you want to live a life filled with purpose, adventure and happiness, you’re going to have to get really comfortable being uncomfortable. So in this video I talk about how you can push yourself further, take the right kind of risks and consistently embrace uncertainty in a way that feels right for you.
Hi there 👋 If you're new to my videos my name is Matt D'Avella. I'm a documentary filmmaker, entrepreneur and KZbinr. I've made a couple documentaries for Netflix. I also teach courses on everything from filmmaking to habit change. If you like to nerd out about self-development as much as I do, you can subscribe for weekly videos.

Not exactly a “wild” risk, but I just ended a 3 year relationship and I’m moving back home to save money to fund my dream: opening a local coffee shop so I can be happy every single day instead of working a job that drains me :) great video, thank you!

My life is "boring" by design... I spent all my early adulthood (16-30) having the excitement of skipping meals to pay for gas to work and having no reason to live... being paycheque to paycheque with no ways to save or improve my life... If you come from a privileged place where you had all your needs filled then yes you'll crave excitement and risk... Boredom and stability is my reward for lasting so long in a shitty place and digging myself out of it.

Was looking for this comment. The risk/reward analysis given by so many motivational types always market "boring, low risk, low reward" choices as a bad thing; as if stability and predictability are somehow inherently less fulfilling.

I recently realized that my goal is to be bored. The first 45 years of my life was go-go-go, work-work-work, stress-stress-stress. Bored means I have completely the things that are important to me and I have time to chose what I want to do. Bored opens my life up to new classes and new art and new learning and new friends or new activities.
@A-Wa

yes it really depends! After work I do other necessary things like cooking and cleaning and all this drains way too much energy, that I just lay on the couch before I sleep. There is no time to be bored, so I see boredom as a privilege to have!
@Frichilsasta08

Yeahh boredom is a privilege for sure. One can be bored from not having money to do things that might be "fun" though. However. If you're constantly financially stressed and simply trying to survive, I'd say boredom is definitely a privilege.

Taking risks definitely makes life more interesting and less boring. I used to be scared of taking financial and social risks in my life, until I read a great idea from author Nassim Taleb. He said "you want to take risks that are adverse to ruin." This opened my eyes to the idea that not all risks are created equal, and that I've been missing out on many opportunities in life.

I feel the title does the contents of this video a disservice - people's lives aren't boring, they are unfulfilling, exhausting and stressful from enduring a less risky path. I'm glad I persisted in watching this nonetheless because it really was a compelling guide on how to get out of your own head and kickstart that thing you always wanted to do - a very thankful fan

I think Covid has made us all quite risk averse and I’m definitely feeling the itchy feel now of wanting to do some new things after such a long time “holding still”. Anxiety is really high at the moment and that’s really linked to fear/risk perception too. Lots to think about from this for sure!

Such good advice. I've been very specific with my job choices in an attempt to carefully curate my career and respective growth. And looking back there are some jobs I should've taken and definitely one or two I should've passed on. I know this now because I chose action. The thing that scares me most is the difficulty to quantify the cost/reward of inaction, because of how success and growth compounds, equally discontent and stagnation. Personally, I'd rather make the choice than have it be made for me. To everyone, good luck on your journey, I've started and still going :)

I was getting bored, felt like the nine inch nail song, “every day exactly the same”, so I signed up for jiu jitsu as a 45 yr old premenopausal wife & mother, yikes, daily asking what am I doing… but I see improvement, & my 12 yr old son trains too and sometimes we work together, helping each other having fun. Definitely not bored anymore and so far worth the risk of old lady body breaking… 😁 thanks for another great video. 🤓👍💕

I've been working for a federal agency for 10 years now. Three years ago, as several of my co-workers retired, most of them had told me that they are not financially ready! After 30 plus years of service, they are still not ready? That was a rude awakening for me, I don't want to end up in that same situation! So I've decided to invest into rental properties. Now, I have 2 SFH rentals and planning to acquire more. This video is making me eager to pull the trigger again and just keep moving forward! Thanks Matt!

5:48 The I've failed bad before and I can do it again is a game changer. This is from someone who had to move in with grandparents due to financial constraints. When I think about going through it again it is bad, but I know I've been there, I've done that. But if you never went "that low", the worst case scenario will seems unbearable. The first big fail is the worst.

I think the problem for most ppl is that most of their life is risk. Me, personaly, dont have any kind of stability in life, everything is changing everytime and i have to keep getting track of myself over and over again. Its not like im afraid of risk, its that every aspect of my life is already taking risky decisons but whitout being my choice, just because i have to live. I dont fear any kind of risk, i dont fear my confort zone cause i dont have one, and most of the world is like that. If the problem was "getting will to overcome fear" i would already be a millionare living in swiszerland .

This zipline started on top of a Mt. as high as the Empire state building and was 1 mile long. Never would of had the courage for it without going on the tame one first. Start small.. I've been self-employed for 12 years (and I now employ my husband). Heck yes it's scary, but it is SO worth it. Do it, people! But I agree with Matt - do it smart. Start your thing on the side. Do the learning while you're still earning. Set aside a safety net. I spent 1.5 years running my biz on the side as a hobby before life forced me to take it full-time (which, thankfully, worked out for me - but I worked my ass off at that point to make it happen). When things get challenging, the thought of working for someone else is usually more than enough to motivate me to keep working, experimenting, growing. Business is one big experiment - and that's what makes it fun! Life is not what I expected when I was younger, but it's better than I could have ever imagined.

That's true. I'm currently on a job that I don't really like, but for my country's standards (will get back to this in a second) that's pretty high pay since I'm in the US. But in a sense I felt unfulfilled eventhough I can save litterally everything that I make and buy whatever I want. But I learned that having good mental health, be around people that you really enjoy being around and live the life that you want to live is more important. So I decided to quit my job THIS VERY DAY (what a coincidence), go back home in 2 weeks, to Vietnam, and then live off what I have saved here in the US while I try to figure out a new life in my home country.

I always think of the comfort zone as a circle with me in the middle. It will shrink automatically if not intentionally enlarged. I traveled through southern Africa and greatly increased the size of the circle. But it has since shrunk, especially during Covid. Now an interrail trip through Europe sounds very scary to me. But I know that with a little effort, I can increase my comfort zone again.

I feel like this is completely dependent on knowing what you want to do. Some of us just haven't found what we're passionate about and are sick of the same mundane cycle. And yes I know, if you don't know what you're passionate about then you need to explore more things. I have, and I still haven't found anything worth pivoting towards. This advice is only good for those who have the clarity of what they love, most of us don't have that clarity and probably will never find it.

Just a high-school diploma and basic knowledge of mechanical engineering and architecture. I work pretty much all the time. I'm a truck driver, so even when I sleep, I'm technically working. I don't know what to do to be able to focus on my projects. Develop more of my engineering skills. If I just quit, then my family would probably dismantle. My father would work alone all the time, and my mom would always fight with him over the littlest things. I would be able to have more time tho. And no money at all. Who would hire an engineer with no degree? So that is my dilemma. How do I take this risk, knowing that the worst thing that could happen, is my family completely ripping itself apart?

And this sums up the the saying "the rich get richer" and why we desperately need a robust social safety net. Having a wealthy, stable childhood allows people to feel they can take bigger risks that will, statistically, lead to bigger rewards. They feel safe doing this over and over until something succeeds. The more wealthy your background the bigger risks you'll be willing to safely take, and ultimately the more money you'll potentially make as Matt explains. When your risk could mean losing your house and food you are less likely to take it. People from relatively wealthy families talking about the "risks" they took and why that means they "earned" their wealth are massively over exaggerating the danger they felt. For them investing hundreds of thousands into a business is less risky than us leaving a stable job to earn slightly more. This society is rigged.
@gabygrand
@gabygrand 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Also womens safety is affected when she leans on her partner, which statistically means she is likely to experience financial abuse. Womens loves are also y default more expensive and we need health insurance for birth go from and potentially getting pregnant. This applies to people with disabilities too, so really need a solid net because their life depends on it

To ECFMG From doctors and medical students of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. On the 31st of March 2022, on International Doctor’s Day, ECFMG has banned for an unknown period of time all Russian doctors, based on their citizenship, and nationality from taking USMLE exams and obtaining an ECFMG certificate which is needed for applying to US residency. Interestingly, we found out about this decision by accident. One of our fellow colleagues had a call to solve routine questions regarding their application and found out that his documents are no longer processed because of his Russian citizenship. ECFMG representatives later confirmed their decision and added that they will not publicly announce it on their website or social media. We are not able to pay, or register for the exams USMLE Step 1 or USMLE CK. Those who have already passed these steps will not be able to go through any ECFMG certification pathways. That means that the absolute majority of Russian citizens won’t be able to take USMLE exams at all, without exemptions. This ban applies even for Russians with dual citizenship, even if it is Ukrainian or US, Russians who have political asylum in the US or any other country and even for foreign citizens, who currently reside in Russia. Ban is based solely on our citizenship and national origin, not on our personal choice, beliefs or actions taken during these tough political times. Years of hard work we put into studying medicine, self improving and preparing for medical residency in the US are ruined by this quiet decision of ECFMG officials. Our work has simply been portrayed as unimportant, all due to political issues that we, in fact, have no control over. Throughout the last month we have signed numerous petitions against this war, putting ourselves at risk. Please, take pity on us, we are simple doctors, looking to practice medicine and save lives in peace. It’s a discrimination of Russian citizens based on country of origin. Russian doctors signed petition against the war and more than 17 500 signed

I think I'd rather not practice being homeless to motivate myself, but an interesting suggestion nonetheless. Tbh, I love your material, I've been following for about 5-8 years. Keep up the good work.

@MattDAvella. Hey, I'm sorry, I just re-read that comment and it comes across way more bitchy than I was intending even at that moment, I was more so just trying to be sarcastic. I was kind of referring to 4:28 where you ask yourself, "what's the worst thing that could happen?" A few years back I lived in my car before and it really took a toll on my mental health and the thought of being homeless terrifies me to my core. My mom's isn't really an option either bc I have 5 siblings, two nephews and inevitably two or more people are living with at any given time, which already has one person sleeping on the couch. I was definitely more frustrated about that when I commented than anything you said. Right now, I am kind of at this crossroads in my life where I'm trying to go back to school and not have to go back to my profession (civil engineering) because I hate everything about it, but I just don't have the kind of money to take any real risks in my life and it seems every time I take a risk anyway, it falls completely flat or blows up in my face in a spectacular fashion. Sorry if I came across as an asshole before. I am sometimes, but I'm working on it.

But what if you take a risk and the grass isn't exactly greener on the other side. How do I know if I just need to keep pushing and hope things get better or if I made a mistake? I don't want to quit on my goals but maybe they weren't as great as I thought they'd be.

If your life's boring it means you dont' have to struggle to survive. Stop watching rich kids on YT telling you how to live and learn to appreciate the little things in your life.

I may be in the "building the runway" stage of my life for now. Saving money and improving my health to possibly venture into being a fiction writer. Though life seems to be set upon bombing that runway, first figuratively and now literally with Russian invasion.
