Have you considered just not taking the step before and letting Uke run on to it? For me the key to Tomoenage is the ability to lift a foot that is loaded with weight - that gets you straight into the falling part of the throw without preparation movements.

OMG, you're absolutely right! So easy to overlook! I find myself failing the tomoe nage quite often and wondering why it didn't work. Thank you!
