Vidzemes (or Matīsa cause of the location on Matīsa street) markets official birth date is 15th October 1902nd, when two brand new pavilions of just as new Alexander's market were officially opened. Though there was a marketplace there since at least 1876. It formed around the artesian well pump where people from this neighborhood took drinking water. Before new pavilions were built, it was located in the place where now stands the new St. Ģertrūdes church. For some time demand for marketplace rose here as Riga was growing and it was too far for people from suburbs to go to Daugavmalas (Daugava riverside) market.

I lived round the corner from that market on Valdemara iela , only up to 7 years ago it was a fairly big market indoor and outdoor with a huge range of local produce , Dairy , Meat and vegetables , there were also outside hangers with locally grown organic stands , got to know a few of the stall owners with my wife ! were now living in Baltizares on the lake so I dont shop in the centre etc as much as we use to ! Yep KZbin is a nightmare !
