Why do you guys think Konami releases archetypes almost with the intention of them being bad? 🤔

Alex Fields dunno why, but maybe it could be fixed with the recent trend of launching support for old archetypes? They still have to get better at that because relinquished is as unplayable as ever, but cyber dragons sure will get a boost in cyho

Alex Fields I feel almost like it's a combination of the players AND Konami.. I feel like Konami makes Archetypes geared towards competitive adult players then some cool looking but half functional archetypes for younger players to be able to get into the game but not be to overwhelmed by the more complex stuff.. but I also feel like some archetypes COULD be good but then that ONE player finds some way to use a few cards from an archetype and either make it broken in it's own deck or as some type of engine then get those cards banned and the archetype dies until it gets more support that's more "fair" for the current gamestate.

Money, that's why. That and they're just a terrible gaming corporation in general. See all the god-awful games we got from them recently, especially Metal Gear Survive.

Alex Fields and also to Paul.. I love Amorphage. Lol. I took Amorphage to my very first regional and was able to beat Blue Eyes at it's prime and did very well. I only didn't top because when I first got there I was nervous and intimidated so I miss played alot. But as I got more comfortable and relaxed I never lost another Match.. I even made someone drop out of the event because I blew them out so bad.. they just need a link monster and an on activation draw card instead of "if" draws and it can be competitive.

Fun fact/idea: The Tindangle archetype is (I'm almost entirely sure) based on a horror story written by a guy who wrote HP Lovecraft-type stories called "The Hounds of Tindalos". In the story the creatures apparently exist in a dimension made of ridiculous angles and corners everywhere, so that may explain their jagged appearance in the cards. Plus how I like to think of them is they're coming from another dimension in a way because they're a deck style that isn't as viable in link format as it would've been before, yet they're a link flip deck. Just thought you guys would find that interesting.

One big thing is the crazy discrepancy between structure deck archetypes of recent years and most archetypes from boosters. Dinos, Monarchs, DDD, ABC are all great and were especially good when they came out. Even other structure deck stuff is at least playable, like Counter Fairies, Lair of Darkness, and Ancient Gears. Why can't Konami even give a little of the same care to some of the booster set archetypes?

lair of darkness is trash tier while trickstar gouki & sky striker are the top 3 decks of the format, mythical beasts, world chalice & magical musketeers are all also significantly better than lair, even vampires are a better deck than lair, they flow & find consistency where lair is inherently not consistent, it's only powerful & nothing else, & that doesn't work for a card game, sorry xP kinda a pet peeve atm
@davidburke4101
@davidburke4101 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with lair of darkness is that it doesn't have enough cards to truly make an archetype, not that the archetype is bad. It has 4 monsters, 1 of which is a bootleg kaiju with a worthless effect, 2 are normal summons, and they can't generate advantage without the field spell. Duke shade doesn't do anything for the archetype. It can add back diabolos for what? It doesn't matter if it's in the hand or graveyard. Ahrima is nice, but 9/10 it ends up being 3 copies of terraforming since the rest of the deck can't function without the field spell. In effect, you end up with 2 monsters you need to hard draw and it dies to an mst. The deck doesn't have enough cards to function on it's own. A rota spell, and trap would go a long way to making it playable.
@Marcusjnmc
@Marcusjnmc 6 жыл бұрын
what your describing sounds like a fundamentally gawdawful archetype to me, & I'll add that the deck needs both the field spell & a functioning monster engine to function & on top of 2 inconsistent parralel engines which do nothing for eachother to help boost consistency can also brick on search targets & generic cards played 'as intended' and that barely functioning mess if anything goes wrong then fails to maintain field presence or recursion falling apart if anything is thrown at it unless it manages to demolish the opponent entirely with an early virus. that deck doesn't need a rota, it needs to be shredded into component parts & never be put back together again, stick the field spell in decks that can abuse it like infernoids in as minimal a number as possible so it does minimal damage to consistency, use diabolos with sky strikers because it just works, & stick the level 4 trap searcher in a deck already playing traps that has a free normal & would benefit from a trap searcher.

I'm actually a really big fan of undersupported one set archetypes. While they can never be competitive these decks are the ones I find to be the most interesting and the undersupported aspect is interesting because often times it even means that they can't flesh out a full deck so you have to figure out how to play them. Then for the hipster in me the fact that they are undersupported means it's a deck you can really make your own and is incredibly likely to be unique which I always enjoy as long as I figure out how to make it workable. I've had some actual success with a few of these decks though and they are... 1. Chemicritters 2. Aqua Actresses 3. Prediction Princess 4. Phantasm Spiral. The reason I've had success with these four decks is all of them except prediction princess can easily incorporate some powerful anti-meta and floodgate cards that will devastate an opponent but not necessarily these decks. Chemicritters are a great demise deck that let you drop big beaters for free (2 normal summons from field spell and free lvl 5 or higher normal summon) and then fill your backrow with floodgates to wreck your opponents plays and even have access to the incredible backrow card "Champion's Vigilance" which if you don't gemini summon your critter is just a free solemn. Aqua actresses allow you to easily tech in barrier statue of torrent and testudo erat numen, which will lock your opponent out of special summoning and be protected from battle by Aquarium Stage so you just have to include cards to protect them from various effects and it won't hinder your actress strategy at all. The deck also has good frog synergy so that helps it out. Phantasm Spiral is another great demise deck, also having access to champion's vigilance as well as floodgates that you can make indestructable by the power of "Sea Stealth Attack." Floodgates that can't be destroyed become a lot more of a pain to deal with than normal and the deck has access to heat wave which is a super powerful play. Prediction Princess success comes from the flexibility of other useful flip monsters you can play with them. Most do subterrors or shaddolls which are solid but more predictable to the average player. My success with it came from a cheesy deck strategy using it with "Dice Jar" and "That Six" to fairly reliably burn my opponent for 6000 damage which after poke damage of some kind will end any duel. This of course is not nearly as viable as cheese is less reliable than floodgating your opponent. Really though unless you deck is a meta deck it has to have some way to include anti-meta cards or strategies in it if you want to have any reliable success with it from my experience, otherwise it would just be a meta deck which means for these undersupported decks if you want to play them in any setting that isn't mutual levels of casual you have to see if you can find some way to lock your opponent out of playing that doesn't do it to you.

@nicholashamilton6274
@nicholashamilton6274 6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I do use pot of the forbidden and it definitely was made with tarotrei in mind. That's another thing i like about undersupported archetypes is you have to find those synergies naturally since the archetype cards themselves aren't often enough to fill a whole decklist. One of my biggest gripes with archetypes in general is that many of them, especially when given a lot of support, are basically already pre-written with how you are supposed to play them which doesn't interest me as much as trying to find synergies with myself and try out different builds until i find one that works. I enjoy having to find out how to make something work over just throwing all the archetype cards in there and it works naturally.

What if, get this, konami released a MUCH LOWER number of core sets, and fill them with actual good archetypes with GOOD cards and some reprints. Instead of making 300 varients of the same shitty card and padding a large amount of packs. This combined with no more short printing, it might make buying packs just as good (possibly better) than buying singles.

@robledosarhento1567
@robledosarhento1567 6 жыл бұрын
Here's the problem with that whole slow down the release thing. First we need to clarify if we're talking about slowing down TCG releases or slowing down OCG releases. * If we're talking about slowing down TCG releases, then you have this problem that the discrepancy between OCG and TCG card pool will widen. * If we're talking about slowing down OCG releases, then we should have an understanding on how things work in the OCG. Shueisha also print Yu-Gi-Oh! cards (as promo for their V-JUMP/Weekly Shounen Jump/Manga Tankoubon promos), Konami also need to print anime cards on OCG for cross-promotional purposes, not just on core packs but also on "Premium Packs" and "Collector's Pack". Konami also prints promotional cards for events like "Jump Festa". Konami needs to put out products in a timely manner so that sales won't die. You also have to consider that OCG products aren't printed solely for competitive play. There are also fans of the anime and collectors that buy packs, and not just competitive players. You can't just tell these companies, "Hey slow down the release of these new cards!" How about reprints? * Konami already has sets dedicated for reprints (Special Editions, Mega Packs, Battles of Legend, Legendary Collections, Structure Decks, etc.) No need to infest core sets with reprints, since those reprint-dedicated products will just lose their purpose. What would slowing down release pace achieve? (1) The backlog of unprinted anime cards will increase. Anime cards from previous Yu-Gi-Oh! anime will have a harder time to get released because of increased backlog. (2) Don't like the 2 archetypes printed in Pack X? You have to wait for the next pack longer than it is! (3) V-JUMP will struggle on putting Yu-Gi-Oh related content on their magazine, as well as the official news website yu-gi-oh.jp and their OCG Twitter account since majority of the content that people actually go for on these outlets are card spoilers.

I LOVED Krawlers when they came out. I played them for a good while but they were really mediocre. They're getting two new support cards but they don't help. One of them is a normal spell which is out of place in the deck, and the other that'd sound good IS A NORMAL TRAP CARD!!! They need a good boss monster, which would have to be a Link 3 with AT LEAST 2700 ATK. I love the deck (especially the hybrid with Tindangles), and I just want it to at least be good at locals.

First off, excellent Vid. I'm a big fan of crafting up low tier decks just to see how competitive then can become, but usually end severely disappointed. It's so clear that Konami is intentionally making terrible archetypes. It really sucks to watch them knowingly do this to their community. All of us ARE the reason this game still exists, Konami should stop wasting so much cardboard for our closets. A clear example of this is shown in Cybernetic Horizon. Literally SIX cards are coming out for DANGER! and everyone is aware and preparing for it to impact the meta, yet other decks that are less than a year old have 20 archetypal cards and still do NOTHING to influence competitive play. Also, even though it's seen as the degenerate deck of YGO, look at Infernity. This archetype AND Blackwing's got released around the same time as each other. Since 2010, blackwings have gotten multiple synchro, XYZ, and now Link monsters (not to mention dozens of main deck support in between). Infernity's only archetype specific extra deck card is Doom Dragon... Which came out with the first wave of infernity cards. Just my thoughts.
@vparsa87
@vparsa87 6 жыл бұрын
One flaw to your comment and that's that infernity had one of the most busted and free counter traps in the game that is still limited to this day so they didn't need more support.
@Rokanzanator
@Rokanzanator 6 жыл бұрын
Vman87 I agree with you saying they have the broken trap. Nothing black wings have as a single card compares to barrier. But the deck has been doing the exact same combo for 4+years now. The extra deck changes but if you knew infernity combos in 2014 you know them now after minimal practice. I just want some decent main deck cards that let me at least consider changing the loop. BW players could build almost an entirely new variant of BW every 6-8 months just bc of the amount of support cards they get. Im not saying we should get a broken infernity link monster but a toned down version of launcher or a different decent backrow to search off archfiend would be nice instead of always going barrier double break lol

Ryan Flaherty First off we don't have an Xyz or Link Monster. Secondly, yeah we get support more often, so have infernity cuz I'm from that Era of Yu-Gi-Oh too, where Synchro is and will always be my favorite summoning mechanic. Us Blackwings have been able to adapt and survive better than any other legacy deck if not one of the best that keep evolving. We have no Link or Xyz, but yes we have gotten 10+ cards since Ragnorok and Crisis, sadly we've been nesting and waiting to rise. We've seen many of our brethren fall, Infernity as well, but we all can come again. We've been hiding for nearly 10 years and we're about to break free, I wish other Archetypes from Synchro came with us, but sadly that's not the case. 😔

I personally think that a lot of these new archetypes aren’t noticed as much because they aren’t really showcased in the anime, part of what made Heroes and Blackwings so appealing was they were shown very regularly in the show and became fan favourites. As for how to solve the issue I think the best way to fix this is for Konami to release really generic support for every attribute or type, every attribute should have an allure of darkness type card, every type should have a once per turn ROTA, after that it just takes a bit of creativity to make a deck very playable Not every deck is going to be meta viable but if every deck had access to some generic search and draw cards then it would fix a lot of the problems these less popular decks have
@Marcusjnmc

Yeah that is a great idea Team APS :) Actually I'm a Duel Links player but I watch Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG KZbin vids just to see the real difference between DL and the real TCG. And I'm learning bits and pieces everyday by watching your channel and other Yu-Gi-tubers too. Makes me want to buy a physical deck myself by just watching you guys... :) I'm running Spellbook/Prophecy and Noble Knights deck though NK are not currently the meta on the game (Fur Hires are rampant in Ranked Duels, next are the Amazoness and Destiny Heroes. But the new Cyberdark decks are seeing some plays and growing due to the new Zane Truesdale event and they are really good...). I'm just aiming for my last pieces of NK Medraut and Grandmaster of Six Sams for a playset of 3 from their box. My next build would be Bujins and Six Sams and that is why I would love to see a vid from you playing a casual and fun duel with Six Sams with their Secret Six support as well just to see why they are not good. :) More power to you APS squad and keep making great and informative Yu-Gi-Oh! vids for us!

i personally believe thats also the problem with the lack of originality in the meta. My friend plays gravekeepers and you know how long the wait for the support for that has been. I love lightsworns and upset they gave up on twilightsworns (no twilight wulf is criminal.) To fix the problem kinda goes with what you were saying with other archtypes running archytype specific cards, either make things less generic if its going fall into an archtype or actually give the archtype more of its own verisions of spashable cards so its core engine isnt just 3 copies of 5 different cards

Aquaactress, Prediction Princesses, Tindangles were anime cards from one-off characters that have limited screen time. Can't blame Konami for not printing more of those. I think you should distinguish between game-original archetypes (Triamids, Shinobirds, Noble Knights), anime archetypes from one-off characters (Aquaactress, Prediction Princess, Tindangles, Cardians) and anime archetypes from major characters (Galaxy, Blackwing, HEROes). * The first group might receive support (1) depending on whether Konami feels like it or (2) whether those Game Original archetypes appear in the anime (in the case of Constellar, Gladiator Beasts). Also, there's always a chance that Konami might release an unexpected support for those archetypes in the future (i.e.: B.E.F. Zelos in Maximum Crisis, "A" Cell Recombination Device in Invasion: Vengance, etc.) So if your archetype is not that good, don't lose hope. * The second group won't receive any support because the character which uses those archetypes is irrelevant. * The third group periodically receives support. Note that when Konami prints cards for core sets, they seem to have a quota for the number of anime cards to be included in the set.

I agree with your point towards the end in regards to good decks and there being an ‘optimal build or you suck at this game’ sort of mentality. Its frustrating to see some people come up with good ideas or interesting theories for an archtype only for it to be immediately shot down because it wasn’t a paticular version that won a regional or nats etc. Some carda are too good to not run in some decks but if players didn’t experiment these decks would never get to evolve. I mean look at UK nats with Burning abyss or that 69th place at the nawcq. Perfect examples of creativity leading to good results.

I actually like the one-shot archetypes. I'm still using Weather Painters and have seen that people have made: Mekk-Knight, Psy-Frame, True Draco, Metaphys(OCG), Predaplant + Brilliant Fusion variations of the deck and have showcased that there is far more room for experimentations, or a willingness to experiment rather than say an archetype that is tier 1 and everyone just runs it because it's the best variation.

Not really an archetype, but trap monsters have always held a very special place in my heart. I've hoped and prayed that someday trap monsters would get a dedicated boss monster or some sort of fun support. Anguish Pattern is probably the closest we got, and people, me included, have splashed in Uria and Master Peace, but theres never been true dedicated support for trap monsters, even though there's plenty of cards that synergize with them like Imperial Custom and Magic Planter. And no, I do not consider bad archetypal trap monsters as support. The latest one, the altergeist trap monster, does little to further anything for trap monsters, and isn't even played in its own archetype.

I remember some of my favorite archetypes back when I had just gotten back into the game fell into this category. I was big into Mecha Phantom Beasts because planes, but then I saw later that Dracossack was better in just about everything else. I think the issue is that Konami is trying to keep the game "fresh", and apart from new mechanics, the way to do that is to make archetypes that have gimmicks to them. Fire Kings blow themselves up and take the opponent with them. Mecha Phantom Beasts generate tokens that protect them. Zoodiacs spam out crazy powerful Rank 4 Xyz Monsters. Inevitably, some of these gimmicks are going to be bad, but if they didn't exist, people would be complaining, "Konami is running out of ideas!" I've heard it said all the time that you should come with solutions, not problems, but there's no easy solution to this problem. You either make a whole bunch of archetypes that play differently or you make them all the same and then get called out for not having any fun ideas.

I completely agree! But, I’m also going to play the Devil’s Advocate. I think that older meta decks should get some good support too! Nekroz, Kozmo, Qliphort... even if it’s one card off the banlist, or they get given the Cherubini treatment that Burning Abyss got. They get power creeped a bit, but then they can return back into the game at rogue-level play, minimum. Players who couldn’t afford these archetypes at release have a chance to play them at close to full power, and maybe give the meta a brief run for it’s money. Monarchs are at full in the OCG, and it’s not a big deal! This is Yu-Gi-Oh! We don’t have sets rotating in a “Standard” format like MTG or Hearthstone. One of the main features of this game is that you can play any deck you want, from any era, and still be able to hold your own against your friends. In theory. So why won’t Konami let us fulfil our childhood fantasies of having our own deck that fits our personal style, like the heroes and villains of the anime? Isn’t that what Yu-Gi-Oh is sold on?

BattleGuards could be a thing if Konami just created level 4 or lower support(s) while making a few more BattleGuards similar to Swamp and Lava, but BETTER. There are BattleGuard CARDS, just not a fully playable archetype/deck. There's another deck, not quite an archetype that involves Marauding Captain, Freed the Matchless General, Rahz, etc... There's Countless potential decks and archetypes that Konami has just tossed by the way side or just ignored in favour of Meta play and power creep.

I want a cross archetype with mecha phantom beasts and skystrikers called Sky-Destroyers, that can create and use tokens, special summons your main monsters from your hand when meeting summoning conditions, and mess with switching your effect damage to attack increase and effect negating. The main deck monsters each have a corosponding link monster, that acts as a upgrade and is the appearance of Mecha Phantom beasts, but as Mecha suits like skystriker raye has. Sky-Destroyer Lion 1400/1400 If your opponent activates a card effect, you can special Summon this monster from your hand, then negate the activation and destroy that card. You can Tribute this face up card to Special Summon a Sky-Destroyer Roaring Lion from your Extra Deck or GY. When this card leaves the field, special Summon 1 "Sky Mech" token (stats) to your side of the field. Sky-Destroyer Roaring Lion Link 2 down left, down right 1800 Cannot be destroyed if a "Sky Mech" token is on the field. Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 "sky mech" token you control, and add 1 Sky-Destroyer monster from your Deck or GY to your hand. Anytime a monster is summoned to your opponents side of the field, inflict 200 to your opponents life points. Sky-Destroyer Raptor 1200/1600 If your opponent adds 1 card from their deck or GY to their hand except during their draw phase, you can Special Summon this monster from your hand, then your opponent discards a card from their hand. You can Tribute this face up card to Special Summon 1 Sky-Destroyer Screeching Raptor from your Extra Deck or GY. When this card leaves the field, you can Special Summon 1 "Sky Mech" token (stats) to your side of the field. Sky-Destroyer Screeching Raptor 2 link up left, up right 1600 Cannot be destroyed if a "Sky Mech" token is on the field. Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 "sky mech" token you control, and change the attack of monster(s) the arrows on this monster points to to 1600. When an opponents monster is destroyed by battle, inflict 300 damage to their life points. Sky-Destroyer Wolf 1100/1900 If your opponent activates a card in their GY, you can Special Summon this monster from your hand, then negate the activation and banish all copies of the card in your opponents GY. You can Tribute this face up card to Special Summon 1 Sky-Destroyer Howling Wolf from your Extra Deck or GY. When this card leaves the field, you can Special Summon 1 "Sky Mech" token (stats) to your side of the field. Sky-Destroyer Howling Wolf 2 Link middle left, middle right 1500 Cannot be destroyed if a "Sky Mech" token is on the field. Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 "sky mech" token you control, and target 2 banished Sky-Destroyer Monster cards, add 1 to your hand, and shuffle the other 1 back in your deck. If a Sky-Destroyer monster is banished, inflict 200 damage to your opponents life points. Sky-Destroyer Falcon 0/2200 If your opponent Special Summons a monster from the Extra Deck, you can Special Summon this monster from your hand, then negate the effects of that monster. You can Tribute this face up card to Special Summon 1 Sky-Destroyer Screaming Falcon from your Extra Deck or GY. When this card leaves the field, you can Special Summon 1 "Sky Mech" token (stats) to your side of the field. Sky-Destroyer Screaming Falcon 2 link top center, bottom center 400 Cannot be destroyed if a "Sky Mech" token is on the field. You can Tribute 1 "sky mech" token you control, and activate each of these effects once per turn - draw 1 card for every card this card points to. - banish the top 3 cards of your deck, and increase the attack of all Sky-Destroyer monsters on your side of your field by 800 for every Sky-Destroyer monster that was banished until the end of your opponents turn. Sky-Destroyer - Turbulence Continuous Trap You can activate 1 of these effects once during your opponents turn. - If you control no monsters in your main monster zones, Special Summon 1 "Sky Mech" token to your side of the field. - Activate the effect of 1 Sky-Destroyer monster in your GY as if it was in your hand, but banish it at the end of the turn this effect was applied. Sky-Destroyer - Mech Load Quick Spell Excavate 3 cards from the top of your deck. Special Summon 1 "Sky Mech" token (stats) for every Sky-Destroyer Monster that was excavated. Put the cards back on the top of your deck in any order. You cannot Special Summon any other "Sky Mech" tokens this turn. Sky-Destroyer - Interference Spell Destroy as many "Sky Mech" tokens on your field as you want. Negate effects of cards on the field equal to the same amount of tokens destroyed by this cards effect. Inflict 300 damage to your opponents life points for every card that had its effects negated. Sky-Destroyer - Furious Skies Field Spell You can negate the effect of any damage a Sky-Destroyer card does, and increase the attack of all Sky-Destroyers on your field by the same amount. While this card is face up on the field, your opponent can not activate the effects of monster cards in their hand.

As much as I've come to accept that Shinobirds as an archetype will probably never get more support, generally all Spirit monsters are relevant to them but only good ones are Aratama, Nikitama and Amano-Iwato. I do fairly well with Shinobird Spirits, just fill it with Kajui's, Lava Golems (they're all lvl 8's), throw in some Trade-ins and Pre-Preps and it's a good rogue, anti-meta deck :)

Good archetype really depends on your standpoint and sometimes even if an archetype isn't good, some of its non-Specific support that comes out with it can make older Decks play better which meay not help on a competitive level, but is a good thing for casual players to some extent. Konami, knows that there are still casual players who will buy these things to play like that, so they make them. An example is Catalyst Field allowing Gemini Decks to play somewhat consistently now on a casual level and even being usable with Synchros and Xyzs and you can get out big Monsters like Phoenix Gearfried instantly... Suddenly the thoughts of a Warrior Gemini Equip Spell Deck sounds useable on a casual level and it is because I made my sister one and it's better than a few of my Decks and can play on an even level with everyone elses Decks up until we play Pendulums and such.

I think it's kinda funny the best pump and dump deck Konami ever made is Phantasm Spiral. Somehow it was the vanilla beat down deck that got the stuff it needed. Powerful traps, easy to summon boss and a great field spell that searches everything. I'd love if they'd do more Phantasm Spiral stuff though. The idea of powerful effects but you must forgo effect monsters entirely is fun. At least Shinobird are decent with deviritual since the Peacocks are actually good.

At least Konami likes to give out a lot of legacy support to older archetypes. So I can imagine maybe some more support cards for these more obscure archetypes could come by. A great thing would be a side set with new support EXCLUSIVELY for these obscure decks. Imagine more support for decks like Dinomist, Aquatress, Prediction Princess, Amorphage, Lyrilusc and Triamid etc. I’d also like to see more support more failed TCG archetypes, which Konami seems to be doing more and more often with decks like Noble Knights and Subterrors
