Wibble Rugby

4 жыл бұрын

On the 2nd of November 2019; England and South Africa took to the field to fight for the ultimate title in Rugby, that of World Champions. 80 Minutes later, South Africa were established as Champions and deserving winners. But how did South Africa nullify England as effectively as they did, when every pundit said England were the favourites?
How did England go from a rampant, incredible performance against New Zealand, to being undone by the Springbok defensive line?
Today, we show you the Springbok defensive playbook, and how using their trade secrets, they were able to pin England into submission.
Grab a beer, sit back, and enjoy. We've got a hell of a story to tell.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I DID NOT ASSIGN THE DEFENDERS ROLES CORRECTLY DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY OF THE ROLES AND DYNAMICS INVOLVED. For those interested, a more accurate description of the roles are listed below: These roles apply to the defenders in line (usually backs) from in-to-out. D1: THE CATCH UP DEFENDER (CUD): Is the man on the Tacklers inside who drifts out to cover an inside step on the tackler by the ball carrier and can command the actions of the tackler. D2: THE TACKLER: Is the man who is intended to make the tackle, but becomes the new CUD should the original CUD (Inside defender) push him out. The original CUD in said case covers the tacklers original man, pushing him out to the next attacker, and making the original tackler the new CUD. The new CUD combines with the former ADJ (now tackler) to defend the 13 channel. D3/D4: THE ADJUSTING DEFENDER (ADJ): Traditionally the 13/WINGER, the ADJ is the man outside the Tackler and therefore ball carrier who with his wider spacings, shoots in to hit the 2nd receiver from the side, stopping the attack getting to the outside backs. These are the backs who are authorised to make this rush dependent on the integrity of the inside defence. Whether this is the 13/WINGER is dependent on the width of the attack, and therefore the player assigned as CUD. EG: The names of the defensive roles given to these players in the video are not assigned correctly due to the potential confusion caused by the dynamics. For example against New Zealand in the sweep; Pollard starts off as the CUD, with De Allende the tackler, and Kriel the ADJ to cut off the 2nd line attack. Once the M1 is passed, South Africa start a "J" defence. Pollard pushes De Allende out, and De Allende becomes the CUD, with Pollard covering De Allende's inside shoulder. As De Allende is now the CUD, Kriels' role shifts to the tackler, and he pushes out to cover the decoy line of Ben Smith, with De Allende covering his inside shoulder. As Kriel is now the tackler for the 13 channel, Kolbe takes over the ADJ role, adjusting his run to shoot in and cut off the slice option in Sevu Reece. The important thing to remember, is that the defensive roles shift down the line as the ball is moved wide. So the original CUD becomes a guard for the man outside him, the tackler becomes a CUD, the ADJ becomes a tackler, and the man originally outside the tackler becomes the ADJ. Basically, the CUD is a tactic to shift the roles originally assigned down the line, with the ADJ defenders always starting wide so they can jam in. Due to the potential confusion of this explanation and length of time it would have added to the video, we are using the names differently in this video to fit with the actions of the defenders for simplicity. P.S: Hope you understand!

@Skyscraper2015

I know it might not be much but I wouldn't put it passed Eddie Jones to instruct something like this. As a Saffa as well, I have watched this video a lot and have been wondering if Eddie Jones instructed it too. In my opinion, yes he did but I dont think he would have said it so much as implied it would possibly help the team, were it to happen. I had been reading articles of Eddie Jones and Steve Hansen on Rugby365 before the first RWC Semi Final and Jones was pushing the boundaries with his humour towards Hansen making it appear to be rude but when confronted he said it was him and Hansen having a light hearted banter, tho I didnt really hear any banter from Hansen. Anyways, I could be wrong but as was stated in kzbin.info/www/bejne/enXVhoCMfpyih68 England are encouraged to be somewhat bullies on the pitch, not at all meant as a bad thing because New Zealand play calm and collected but in their own way as ruthless and South Africa play like bastards, like as Squidge mentions not a bully on a pitch but a herd of charging buffaloes. I get the feeling he might occasionally let them play a little too bullying. Having said that, can I just say Wibble that this is really interesting and I love your analysis on the final particularly the part you censored out. Believe me, when I saw it I just laughed as I know I would not have watched it again had it been South Africa on the receiving end. I am a sucker for losses where I will not rewatch a rugby match or any match if I know we lost it. Why? So I get you 100%. In the link Squidge goes through his analysis of how SA won the final and in another video how SA managed to win the world cup. Both really fascinating. It adds so much perspective. This is the RWC final analysis: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onzRcp96lt56mrs The one above is of the entire world cup.

@@cobusbrits2 Not "better", but complimentary to Squidge. There's only so much a TV analyst can say or do in 3-5 minutes. Squidge does a great job of showing how an overall result can be overviewed in a long-term series of videos that you'll benefit more from IF you're loyal to his videos AND you have an appetite for understanding how a sport can progress for the better, and gloss over the negatives. This analysis however goes further, and it requires the likes of you and me to appreciate experiences of other sports before the tactics and strategies can make sporting sense, as well as Rugby Union sense. If you can, then the purist point of view (there's only two types of rugby: good and bad) will help you understand why the "global game" really is that, and how entertainment can be viewed far more engaging than many old [so-and-sos] would have you believe - regardless of whether you play fantasy rugby or not!

Such amazing level of effectiveness (by the Bokke) against any opposing team is nothing but entertainment. Especially when apparently achieving such level requires years of amazingly hard work, incredible skills, special intelligence, deep levels of teamwork and trust and utter dedication driven by perennial extreme passion for doing the job well. It is truly humbling to realise that despite having played as an amateur in my younger days and having followed (international) rugby closely for several decades I've still been clueless almost the entire time. Your videos confirm and immensely enhance what I instinctively always knew but could never actually understand why and how, that international rugby teams are performing at immortal levels. And why having a thriving professional home competition is essential to any nation for developing even a chance on ever competing in test rugby. This video shows how the Bokke's victorious campaign is so much more impressive and inspiring than it already is for just the obvious reasons. And how all their opponents have been doing so much more analysing and thwarting of their game than the results on the field and on the score board ever reflected. It raised my admiration for all of them. (But even more for the Bokke of course, haha) Thank you, baie lekker man!

Essentially having your defense coach on the field is what differentiated the Boks... It will be interesting to see if he will be allowed on the field as the head coach because Rassie is still going to be in the coach's box during matches..

Excellent analysis with one criticism. Really enjoyed your breakdown of Boks defensively and in attack. Thorough & lucid. Only criticism and it is something many analysists fall into after games: missed chances. Yes, England missed some opportunities, however, so did the Boks. When analysists say this; they far too often create a perception only one team missed opportunities. That is rarely true. Overall great work please keep it up.

Job well done! Thank you for the breakdown. Pity about the "technical glitch" (33:15) on that memorable try but all rugby supporters can relate as we know too well that it causes physcial pain and severe emotional trauma to see the opposition break though your team's defence like that. Take nothing away from England. They gave it their all. Would love to see a Lion's tour or even a (much rarer) barbarians tour.

Fantastic video @wibblerugby - in this six nations Scotland transformed from being one of the worst defensive teams to the best, and nilling Italy. If you could make a shorter video on the changes Scotland made with their new defensive coach Steve Tandy resulting in this turn around it would be fascinating.

An excellent review. The 2019 RWC Final was an excellent showcase of South African togetherness, and a magnificently constructed, and manufactured Springbok victory.... Sadly, there is no Full Match replay of the South Africa vs England match; which is, for me, quite bizarre really; the 2019 RWC Semi-Final is available to view in Full Match format, yet not the Final. Any opinions on that folks?

@@ZambeziKid With Marler starting and Farrell-Tuilagi-Slade, I thought we could have kept it tight and played the game SA wanted to play. With Ford we went for our attacking game plan. And thats alright! But i didn't think we could dominate the way we did against the Kiwis' if i'm honest. Hence if we'd started Marler, that would have gone a long way to evening the score. Long story short, was nervous with our starting line-up, worried when Sinckler went off, and would have been relatively 50/50 had Marler and Slade started.

@@WibbleRugby I was worried after both semis. SA didnt play well vs Wales, and Eng were unbelievable vs NZ. I thought SA looked a little clueless vs Wales and I thought Eng would may be able to starve SA of the ball. But one thing that holds true of many SA sides in recent years, is that they are better without the ball, so I always felt it would be close. I have never felt concerned by SA playing Eng, but I was feeling nervous about this one. As u showed, SA defence did hold up very well, but I also thought the attack did really well too... smthg that hadn't been seen much vs Wales. Pollard came in to the game well. He mixed kicks, carries and passing very well, and the rest of the backs managed to make good yards when they got the ball. They did look like they would get points on the board.... and well, the scrums ... ultimately, I think that was the turner.

Thanks for that mate! I'm a player myself, have dabbled in coaching before but still have a few years of Rugby left in me so focusing on that :) In regards to learning this, a combo of a very good coach when I was younger and self-learning. I always liked breaking down teams and ways that you could attack them more efficiently dependent on their make up etc. I hated going through the motions of copying the same old ideas and as such started thinking up of new ideas which eventually led to this! Nausing like hell on attack and watching a lot of Rugby helped! But eventually it all just kinda fitted together in my mind.

That's a very good analysis. One of the reasons that England didn't expose the catch up defender in that final was pressure. The speed at which they were forced to play at, the near non - existent space with which to read the defense, coupled with the fact that it was a world cup final.... lethal

I think what happens here are more talent and skill, evolving. Once you have that combination you may analyse the game plan being played. In the game you don't over think to the extent you are exhibiting. The game is set on tackles, yes. But not playing chess. Its reading the field, without thinking. Naas Botha did this. Cheslin doesn't think what his next move is. He has enough talent to just make it work. Just my opinion. In analysing a game, you will find patterns, without it being planned. From experience on the field there is no time to over think such tricks. Springboks are just brut force and talent. Pollard is also a very intelligent player. He knows where he is best on the field. Frans Steyn is the same. He didn't score points in the world cup, but created points knowing how to read the field. Ruan Pienaar is another example. You don't teach a old dog new tricks. Talent and skill makes the Boks the best.

You cant be serious Nadia. There is a thick Stormers playbook from way back when explaining the index. Why would there be a playbook if it is all about 'brute force and talent'? If it was all about brute force and talent then the Boks would have been great under Allistair but they were a disaster. Like Richie Mccaw said, 'its all about doing the small things right' which is what this whole video was about. Watch it again and see if you can recognize some of it in the next Bok test and you will see cumulitive effect of those small things have a big impact.
