On the 26th of October 2019, England put in their greatest ever performance to knock New Zealand out of the Rugby World Cup. A week later, they were deservedly beaten by South Africa. How could they go from comprehensive victory to agonising defeat in one week? Today, we show you how in the full breakdown of Eddie Jones' tactics, that worked to perfection.

@@doug6500 Who? Squidge? Can you blame him? He's Welsh. Also he is not the only one. England rugby players on the field do have a way of making themselves hated by pretty much all opposition. Off the field however, they are probably really decent chaps but its all in good rugby feeling. I must say New Zealand and England are probably the most frustrating teams to play against as a South African. They get into game play like sand in the clothes. The Boks had a way of dealing with England tho I can say with a level of certainty, England did South Africa a favour by removing them from the final. I have a feeling they would probably have gone on to win a third consecutive RWC title. I didnt want them to. Thanks.

Interesting analysis, saw an interview on Sky Sports last month with Ritchie Mounga talking about how he got targeted by England and Daly taking him on the outside, he was very complimentary about the tactics! For me, the biggest factor in the Ben Youngs disallowed try was the dummy run by Manu, that close to line you can see the defenders understandably getting drawn to him!

Looking forward to your RWC final analysis on if the Boks purposefully countered this plan which was seemingly so successful in the lead up and matches prior to and including the All Black game or if England changed tactics for The Boks and lost on that game plan or did the Boks hit England with something surprising and out of their usual DNA?

Great exposition. Looking forward to your video that shows why these tactics wouldn't and didn't work in the finals against the Springboks. And what England did differently. Surely, it can be elaborated more than just stating that the Springboks aren't the All Blacks, which is why England lost.

They're not. Moral of the story is South Africa's entire defence and principles is designed to create slow ball at any cost. I have a lot of work to do for this one, as first I have to show the South african defensive playbook, and then, how it was used to nullify England's tactics. The playbook portion alone will hit 20 minutes, and then the rest will be around 10. So.. It may take a while! But want to do it right. Aiming to have it done within a week-fortnight.

@Skyscraper2015
@Skyscraper2015 4 жыл бұрын
From what I have seen of Eddie Jones, he is really good at long term planning and if he puts his mind to a situation will give it everything and for the most part he succeeds. Where I think his issue lies is when he needs to suddenly adapt to a new threat, he almost always fades. His long term tactics make for really good games and exciting knowing the team he coaches will tend to be victorious in one way or another. In the matches mentioned above he was decidedly gifted at taking out the opposition in those specific games but looking back he didnt have as much luck with games that seemingly sprung on him. Namely the upset in 2015 J v SA, [I want that date forever erased from history being a South African myself. I am thankful he got taken to the cleaners in the RWC final last year.] he didnt have much luck with any other game in that World Cup.

The biggest thing is how lucky a team gets with their run in to the game: previous opponents, injuries etc. If Wales had been luckier with the above, South Africa wouldn't have been in the final. England exhausted their core team in this encounter and Eddie didn't have a B team/plan to fall back on for the final. Great analysis though, and shows how tactics/stratagems can help and also constrain a team.
@simonmaney3438

Nice analysis. The difference [for this All Blacks supporter] was that England pretty much played mistake free rugby. They nailed it. Normally a good team like the AB's apply enough pressure that eventually, no matter how good the game plan, mistakes and opportunities come. England kept up the intensity, and more importantly, their accuracy, for 80 mins. Well done, no doubt. [Contrast this with the final where both England's intensity and accuracy let them down]. I seem to remember Richie McCaw [when questioned on the AB's dominance] saying something to the effect that 'there is actually only a couple of percent difference between the top teams. If they are 'on' and you are 'off' by a small amount, then it is game over'. This looks like what happened with England in the semi, and then the final - very difficult to maintain 100%. Even South Africa nearly fell to Wales in their semi.

Great analysis, however I wouldn't lay all the blame on losing to the boks on poor prep or coming off the emotional energy dump against the ABs. It doesn't help to lose your 9 in the final week and your tighthead in the first 5 mins in a game where your firepower coming off the bench is crucial, also having preceding opponents of Japan and Wales takes a bit less out of you than Aus and NZ. Don't want to come off as sour grapes though and SA fully deserved the win on the day. I think it's great for the game that in 2019 there were 5 countries that held the world number 1 spot at some stage, and the international game has matured to a level where there's no team has a unbeatable aura anymore.

My feeling is England had a rough playoff session having to knockout the three top Southern Hemisphere teams to reach the Cup. They took care of Australia no problem and had worked amazingly to remove New Zealand but I think NZ drained their reserves so that when it came to South Africa they were by and large well and truly spent. For South Africa tho, Japan played well but I am sure they were not going to let Japan make fools of them again. However Wales were no pushover. It was tight all the way because Wales knew how South Africa play and did everything to stop them. It is like a scrum that doesnt shift either way because both teams are pushing with everything they have which only manages to equalise the opposition, a paraphrase from Squidge. I am thankful tho SA won that. Kudos to England because I am not sure the boks would have beaten NZ. It certainly would have been tight.

Lol why England won . Because of All Blacks mistakes . As good as the all blacks are that wasn't the best team . The all blacks lost up front where South Africa won up front against England . Because of the forward pack . Read doesn't provide go forward . Nepo can't defend . Taylor doesn't have the heart to go through . But chose to run around . Retalick shouldn't of started based on form . Bridge provided no impact . To give the forwards time to rest . Brodie hasn't got the experience . Akira is better than read . Stronger and faster And would of run through England . Laumape was left behind also and would of made more dents then goodhue . Centre paring should of been , laumape , brown and sonny , sonny coming off the bench for brown . Ben lamb was left behind too , but should of been there instead of bridge . Lamb had an outstanding year . Fast like a winger strong like a forward . Easy extra go forward so the forward can have some rest . Nepo can't defend . Carl tu'inukuafe was left behind too another mistake by hanson . Better in the scrum and defense . Retalick was out of form yet started before tuipuloto , when tuipuloto was in form . Dane Coles loves contact and aggression but was benched for Cody taylor . As good as Taylor is , he doesn't posses mongrol like Coles . And when jordie Barret came on he turned the ball over when we needed to hold it . The all blacks had momentum and could of mounted a come back but he through it away . And with that the game . So it's pretty obvious if you know rugby . Make those few changes and the all blacks would be champions still . Of coarse I take nothing away from England , they're a top side . I just blame the all blacks mistakes and the coaching staff . And I wish razor Robinson was coach because I know he would pick the best team based on form not on favourite's . P.s I'm still hurt by this loss . Out classed by a better team . But thank God for South Africa 🥳 .

We loss the game before the Haka, begun. You beat the All Blacks spiritually. What do I mean? Eddie, attacked the Haka, by using the art of war tactics. What our leader of the Haka, should of done is split and flanked the right with 3 players and then start the Haka. Thats the reason we loss.

SQUIDGE RUGBY did it better. This shamelessly tries to be like Squidge. Even the name.

Actually no, I owe a lot to Squidge and even ran the name and content side of things by him before I started, he was fine with both and has been nothing but supportive. Squidge has his style, and I am never gonna beat that as he is simply genius at it. I'm trying to set up my own with different transitions, music, analysis type, and generally be good at mine.
