Wichita Lineman was written by Jimmy Webb and recorded by Glen Campbell in 1968. It reached number three on the pop charts, number one on the Country Music and Adult Contemporary charts. It has been covered by many.
Wichita Lineman
I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singin' in the wire
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line
I know I need a small vacation
But it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south
Won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line

For some reason the DJ on KGB 101.1 in San Diego played this song every weekday morning at 6:00am when I got up to get ready for school. I would wake up to this song for my entire year of 9th grade in 1969. It was stuck in my head and my PE teacher heard me singing it alone in the boy's shower after gym class. As I turned to head to my locker, coach was leaning against the stub wall around the showers, handed me a towel, and said I should audition for the school glee club. I told him that I was already a band geek and I didn't need any more credits for music or arts.

I had the opportunity to work with freight railroad linemen when I had a job as a communications tech in the 1980's. Prior to today's high speed wireless data networks via microwave towers and satellite dishes, multiple copper wire cables strung via telephone poles next to the railroad tracks were the main way railroad companies communicated by phones, intercoms, and sent signals to control the signal lights, gates, and track switch controls. The lines were very vulnerable to harsh weather conditions that often brought lines down or created overloads, shorts, opens and noise in the lines. The linemen installed and maintained those lines and systems, so they were extremely important in those days. The linemen had to work in every kind of weather conditions at all hours of the day or night on call duty, so it was very difficult to maintain a romantic relationship with the opposite sex. They were always on the open road and very seldom home at any predictable hours. If they had a good relationship, it was very special. It was a very hard job and often lonely at times as they traveled often alone on the open highways and back country roads to and from their assigned work locations thinking about their sweetie at home or kids. Many times, it was the only thing that motivated them and gave them energy when overworked and very tired. But they still had a very important job to do. All lineman no matter where they work, or if they work for a communications company, power company, or railroad company, can relate to this song. God bless Glenn Campbell for bringing this and other beautiful songs to the world for our enjoyment.

Thank you a lot, for me as a russian was a bit hard to understand the song meaning. I ve had been working though not very long for the satellite internet service company (in deep east north of russia there a lot of very distant places: little villages or some kind of mining where there are not a lot meanings of communication only a antenne and slow radio retranslating through several stations. And sometimes there are not any roads or very bad one and to get to the place you should get helicopter or tracked vehicle and it could take a several days. And it was impossible to predict when and where you would be in next week and i always love this song and now i understand more completly why)

hi, someone who came to IOWA'S "DERECHO" LAND HURRICANE 8-10-2020 posted this wonderful video on his page. happened 8 wks. ago this afternoon/evening. many were without electricity for 4-6 wks. NO internet/wifi/phone service in many places after 8 weeks!! i saw it there and had to share it to IOWA'S 55 COUNTIES ouf of 99 that were hit with NO NOTICE AT ALL with 90-140 mph winds, level 4 tornado equivalent!! we had NO national coverage; no help from govt; no help from our state/federal govt. agencies. 22 states, quebec canada, and nova scotia came to help us when the word got out. 1 n. wisc. tree removal company will be here almost 1 ENTIRE YEAR due to endless amount of trees down; going thru roofs, etc. crews have been working 7 days wk. with 12-20 hr. days. 1 lineman's wife said he worked 201 hrs. in 10 days!!!! we DIDN'T HAVE FLOODING; otherwise, we were hit as bad as the gulf coast. GOD BLESS all the line workers...men/women; the tree removal folks; the stump removers; and all who just HAUL trees/debris away plus all the other ESSENTIAL workers who bring the supplies each needs to do their work!! betty gordon, ames, iowa 9.28.2020
