I know this is old but I wish he would've done a follow up to validate the functionally and show that the wicking system was working.

How are you doing with all the rain? Your compost also wicks water. You could mention how well this would work with a hydroponic solution with an inert media, even though NOFA's philosophy does not allow hydroponic you should let Me decide. Use a convex cover to shed the extra rain with a hole in the cover for your plant and a few holes under the lip of the barrel to allow air exchange. Show a few side by side comparisons and measure production. Also, if one feeder bucket lasts one month then I can do four grow containers and add more solution once a week. Have you tried compost tea? All in all a great idea! You have got Me thinking. I will certainly try this system. Thank you.

Hello, thank you so much for this video, helped me a lot. But I have an important question. Should we do drainage holes in the main bin where the plant it? Or not required? Thanks.

Hey checking to see how it is working. Also, if I go deeper work the wick will it encourage the the roots to go deeper?

It should also be noted that soil will wick moisture until it reaches a feild capacity. This means the mix must be correct for the intended plants use. Over wintering plants, should be allowed to dry. It is a good idea with all plants to meet them breath by drying and wetting pulling air through the substrate.

Great video, thanks! I love those hoops over the raised beds. Are they commercially available?
@nofanh1127
@nofanh1127 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jill! All of the hoops are home made out of 1/2 inch galvanized steel conduit pipe. Ron made his own pipe bender from plywood and a wooden wheel.

If the rope went deeper and up to 4" from the surface would encourage the roots to go deeper for more water?

So are their drainage holes in the container that the plant is in ?

Ron, are there drainage holes in the container housing the tomato plant?
@superviro
@superviro 2 жыл бұрын
I would put some drainage holes into the tomato container just in case it rains. Otherwise, I don’t believe that drainage holes would be necessary.

thank you for that very useful video.why is it necessary to use such a depth of soil if the wiking system ..the rope..stays around the roots at the surface ?

What is the minimum size pot to grow a tomato plant? It seems that the pot used is a bit too big for one tomato plant. (If the plant starts to drink from the reservoir, then the rest of the potting mix is unused?)
@nofanh1127
@nofanh1127 2 жыл бұрын
The size of the pot needed can depend on the variety of tomato. In most cases a 14x12 inch pot to a 16x18 inch pot will be good for a tomato plant. In gallons, a 5 to15 gallon pot works for most varieties. What is important is giving them space from other tomato plants and plenty of soil space to grow strong roots.

Ive tried wick irrigation in hydroponics and it didn't work........im interested in how you do it, how do you fertilize ? I found the wick system in the 5 gallon buckets , did not pick up the hydroponic nutrition well,

how long will the rope last as a wicker? I have planters that I don't intend on switching out often..
@mightyconker3903

Nylon will last thousands of years of its kept out of the light. It must be kept out of the light to stop algae anyway. Maybe if a perennial is left in the pot forever it could become congested with roots
