From what I understand Megalopolis is basically the American take on the German movie Metropolis. I'm understanding that it's meant to be a deconstruction and analysis of an alternate history US city that presents itself as a utopia which loops back around to being a dystopia. The original Metropolis was impressionistic, grand and almost mythical in its imagery and presentation, but this ones seems to be more oppressive, capitalist and modern overall

Jay made a good point about the Twisters movie. I watch a lot of storm chasers and it's been a bad year for that. They are busy and there are so many towns that have been destroyed this year. We never truly know all the towns/cities that are affected because they aren't on the news. And the one scene w/ the falling water tower, not sure if it's from El Reno or not, but in 2013 that was the worst tornado. Destroyed El Reno and three professional storm chasers were killed during that tornado plus an amateur storm chaser. Maybe it's an homage but for some, the movie might be traumatic.

it's gandalf. that's why they put in the "Follow your nose" line, to make sure we knew it was Gandalf without saying it
@Grandtheatrix
@Grandtheatrix Ай бұрын
Calling my shot now: It's Saruman. Saruman was the first of the Wizards to arrive, and was a legendary hero throughout all of this age. All other Wizards, including Gandalf, the last to arrive, would have learned everything they knew from him. That is why his betrayal during The Lord Of The Rings is such a horrifying surprise. He has been their mentor and ally for Millennia. I think them using such clear Gandalf imagery as such a deliberate signal WITHOUT them giving us any of his names means it has to be a misdirect. Also, the first line of the show is "Nothing is evil in the beginning". It fits the central theme. And the Strangers musical theme has a subtle current of hammers striking metal running through it. If I was a brilliant composer like Bear McCreary that's the kind of auditory clue I'd bury within my music for people to find later.
@tomfehr
@tomfehr Ай бұрын
@@Grandtheatrix maybe, but I feel like that would be a pretty substantial/weird misdirect to imply he’s Gandalf in a season finale only to have it be Saruman revealed later
@markwood6056
@markwood6056 Ай бұрын
@@Grandtheatrix People take a lot of what is written in Tolkien's world as factual to its universe. And a lot of it isn't. The Silmarillion is a mythology and thus everything in it is suspect. Any thing referenced in song or prose, is passed down stories, meaning they are all suspect. The timeline presented in Lord of the Rings is not factual. Thus it can't be a God's eye telling of events. And since the timeline tells of events that none of the principles witnessed, and with events long after they had left middle Earth, shows that the time line is just that a historical record, and historical records aren't factual. They have bias based on whom ever is the one telling or recording the story. Tolkien even had a comment about Gandalf (I can't remember the exact words), but it's stated similar to the tales of his first arrival have yet to be told. Just like the proto Hobbits aren't mention in any of tests. But Tolkien's note indicate that they did exist as wondering nomads. Now of course thats all if you are trying to tell a strict adaption. This isn't a strict adaption. So technically it can be anything they wish. But for myself, I really dislike (but completely understand) the producers needing to compress events that take an eon to occur to happen in what is likely going to be 50 years or less. Dislike it but there isn't a reasonable way to show growth of various scocieties and cultures, and their decline that does occur (and I do find very fascinating) , but I also understand as a product that is made for the masses you can't expect people to have to (outside of the elves) get to know completely different generations of people each season. Especially in seasons that are likely only going to be 8 episodes long. Thats a far large hill to expect people who aren't well versed in the material to latch on to. I also find it so surprising for anyone to complain about an adaption of Tolkien's work and describing it has slow, or a slog (pacing wise). Tolkien's material isn't fast paced and he isn't focused on the depiction of action. Action occurs but it's rarely the meat and potatoes of the his story telling. Now I know for a lot of people (even as well read as Lord of the Rings is over the decades) thank Lord of the Rings and think Peter Jacksons adaption, but Peter kept some of the message, character beats, and at least showed depictions of a quest, but a lot of it is wrapped into a action trilogy. And it worked, but it's absolutely not true to how Tolkien would create a story. Now because season one is basically just getting the plot starting, I do expect the producers to as the series progress ramp up the action. But I actually thought the pacing of season was far, far closer to Tolkien's pacing than anything done in Jackson's version.

For the Rings of Power, Amazon didn't get the rights to use Gandalf's name or any of the other wizards names as well. Honestly they got a bad deal deal with Tolkien folks - for the money, what they could and could not use. i consider the Amazon series like a "What if . ." version of the Middle Earth stories. Just wish they would let someone do a series based on the years of the trees and First Age. That would be epic!

Megalopolis is inspired by the B&W German film Metropolis, as well as Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. But it is not based on, or a remake of, that film/book. Metropolis has some pretty astounding FX work for a film made in 1927, btw. Thematically, the 1998 movie Dark City is the film's inverse in many ways.
