WICKED (PART ONE) Movie Review (A Review From Someone Who Never Watched The Broadway Musical)

So, I HAVE seen the play in New York City, twice in my lifetime actually, and it is easily one of my favorite Broadway musicals of all time, Top 2 easily. Everything I love about musical theater is very much present in Wicked. So, after seeing the movie, all I have to say is… they absolutely NAILED it! Knocked it out of the park! Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were both perfect as Elphaba and Galinda respectively, especially Ariana as Galinda/Glinda, she was literally the scene stealer and definitely channeled her inner Kristin Chenoweth to a tee. It was actually very faithful to how Act 1 of the show played out, there aren’t a whole lot of changes to my surprise. I mean, there are some, but not a whole lot. Every song from Act 1 of the play is in this film, not a single song has been cut from the film version, and to my surprise, there aren’t even any new songs written specifically for the film version. However, I did look up that any “new songs” are being saved for Part Two next year. And yes, you are correct in that this movie ends exactly how Act 1 ends. So, with that, I know exactly what will happen in Part Two because I’ve seen the play, but I will not spoil it for those who have not seen the play. All I will say is you’ll still be rooting for both Elphaba and Glinda, even by the time Dorothy arrives.

Thanks for that perspective of someone who has seen the play. As luck would have it, I’ll have the chance to see the play for myself before Part Two comes out next year, so I’m pretty excited!

Thank you! I’m sure money is a key reason for splitting this story in two, but I’ve also been told that they’re including elements from the book that the musical was loosely based off, so we’ll see if Part Two sticks the landing.

I wish I was more excited for it. While I really liked Falcon and the Winter Soldier and excited to see Sam Wilson as Captain America, the trailers for Brave New World have been pretty underwhelming and the heavy reshoots have me concerned. I’m hoping it’s great, but it’s not one of my most anticipated films of 2025
