25 years ago, we had a storm just like this. It occurred in early February. It brought 80MPH winds, torrential rain, very intense lightning and thunder. It was during the 1997-1998 El Nino. We were under a severe thunderstorm warning, high wind warning, a winter storm warning, a high surf warning, and a flash flood warning. Unfortunately, several people were killed in this storm. I remember there were numerous trees damaged as well as property damage to homes and businesses due to the high winds and flooding as well as numerous destructive lightning strikes. It also produced numerous power outages.

So sorry about the very late reply Michael! Thanks for watching and your story! I hate to hear about people losing their lives in a storm, but it happens here too, mostly due to people being washed away in their cars. The local news has a saying that they mention throughout monsoon season "turn around, don't drown" to remind people not to try and cross rushing water in their cars. Even with that frequent warning, 1 or 2 people a year are washed away. Very sad.

Awesome storm man! I’m in Albuquerque and the monsoon season has been pretty consistent with rain and good CG’s like yours, caught some pretty good ones the past week. But man places like Tuscon and Phoenix has just been hit with severe storm after severe storm, I heard of that crazy storm that blew over a stand or sum, I don’t remember what it was but the winds I’ve seen all over social media from those storms were crazy. We’ve had storms and locally heavy rainfall here but we have yet to see our first severe thunderstorm of the season.

Thanks for watching and your comment! We have had huge thunderstorms all around us for several weeks now, but until a couple of weeks, none at my location in Green Valley, AZ which is about 25 miles south of Tucson. A week or so ago, we had a hellacious thunderstorm at my location with up to 2" hail, I have a video of that as well. Then the thunderstorm in this video a week or so later. The first one with hail caused a LOT of damage to roof and skylights, hundreds of them that I am aware of. When I started taking video of this storm, I did not think much would come of it because many storms cling to the mountains about 6 or 8 miles east of us. I think I even say that in the video, but boy was I wrong! We ended up with 1.5" of rain that day, and I am happy for the water as well as the show that storm put on!!!

And everyone should know….the insurance adjuster told me that while homeowner’s insurance covers water damage from roof, wall or broken window leaks or burst pipes it doesn’t cover water that might rise high enough to come into the house through a window or door. That’s called flood damage and you have to have flood insurance for that. So…make sure everything drains away from your house and has a way to get out through the wall if your yard is enclosed. Rising water is a flood and it’s not covered unless you buy flood insurance!

We picked up 0.41 inches, so only a third of what you had (we have a weather station in the yard as well). Another person in QC with a station about a mile and a half from us and closer to you got a bit over 0.6 inches. You were right in the heaviest part. With the decent monsoon this year, we’ve almost caught up with where we should be year-to-date. We’re at 5.08 inches cumulative versus 5.5 inches as ‘normal’ average. Although like last year, the winter was very dry and monsoon is ahead of normal. July is about a half inch above average with hopefully more to come today yet.

Yes and no Mia. When we get a lot of rain in a short time, the main damage is erosion, then secondarily, roof leaks, and sometime wind damage in the for of trees down, etc. A few weeks ago, we had a short hail storm that has caused major damage to homes in town with broken skylights, damaged roofs and damaged cars plus some downed trees. We do not get hail very often, especially not up to 2" hail. One other thing is that we occasionally see damage from lightning strikes.
