they decided to split the movie in two because they wanted to have time to dig into the lore that’s in the books, including moments that couldn’t make it to the broadway show due to time restrictions and such. all the people involved in the making of this seem to be very passionate about it. so far i feel like it is in good hands!

Strictly the more modern book that the musical is based off of, or also the original Wizard of Oz books? Either way, I’m actually okay with this - the second act of musicals are always super rushed and empty on film. [They can even feel lacking in the stage versions.] So it’s cool that they will have more content to (ideally) create a well-rounded second half.

people recorded ariana's "no one mourns the wicked" from set, and it sounds incredible. it even confused the general public into thinking she was lipsyncing to kristin chenoweth's take. kristin then took it to an interview saying, "that's all ariana" !!

The changes to the story that were made for the show can cause some confusion regarding Elphaba’s and Glinda’s ages for those who have only seen the musical. In the book it is explained that Elphaba had to help raise Nessarose, since in the book Nessa was born without arms, and so she was not able to go to Shiz until Nessa came of age. Elphaba was an older toddler when her sister was born so she could easily/realistically be 3-5 years older than Glinda.

Just remember people - this is NOT the show! It is a film adaptation and it will be different. Also if you don’t end up liking the film, it doesn’t take anything away from the stage show. So just CHILL!!!

Agreed, and honestly it's why I LOVE that they're splitting the show. I saw 'Wicked' last winter and I was trying to pick out the parts they would remove...and I was STRUGGLING. Like the show is so fucking good that I don't think there's anything about it that CAN be taken out, without fundamentally changing the structure of the show.

Elphaba is supposed to be a bit older, though! Nessa is the one going to college, and Elphaba is just accompanying her. Maybe not Cynthia’s age, but definitely not eighteen.

In the book yes, in the show it's implied that Nessa is going to school EARLY, and that Elphaba and Galinda are the same age.

I completed 14 of L. Frank Bank's novels before I first watched Return to Oz, as my Da was an avid fan and read them aloud to us as children. Gregory Maguire's reinworking of that masterwork was my airplane book on my flight home Sophomore year from college in 1996. My friend from college who was visiting Chicago for her Tenth Reunion in 1999 took me to the touring show in Chicago as a "Thank you" gift for picking her up at the airport as I lived in the Chicago area and we both were fans of the book. The Behind the Curtain Tour was fun as we learned much about the production but I was sad my favorite parts of the book were (bedessariky) cut from the Musical. Hopefully by expanding it into two parts they will include more of what had to be edited out of the Musical.

I’m hearing so many people talking about her end note negatively. Idk. She’s pulling a more pure belt so there’s some gravel but it’s intentional. Whatever her reasons for not mixing into head voice a little I think it’s fine. I’m not sure why people are worried she’s going to vocal fry the whole thing. She’s so extraordinary, she’s going to kill it.

I think the main reason it doesn’t resonate, and I agree with it not being good, is that they took it Diva/Pop and doesn’t have the emotional impactfulness the song is suppose to have.

It's not as dark as the books. Even though it's broken into two parts, Gregory Maguire's novels get not only dark but R rated. Not suitable for a family musical that I'm assuming this is meant to be.

Yeah I agree--it's hard for me to see Cynthia as a college-aged Elphaba and conversely Ariana as the mature, married Glinda. That being said, I'm really excited but definitely managing my expectations, since movie musical adaptations have been hit or miss recently.

That Ariana Comment in the beginning was unnecessary. Literally anyone who has followed her career since Victorious, Knows how much of a Wicked Fan she is. She is Perfect for this role. There's a video of her as a kid singing The Wizard and I and she also sang it at the 15th Anniversary Televised Event. She also has a Song with Mika called Popular Song that was on the 10th Anniversary Cast Recording Re-release. Please stop doubting her in this role.

I have now watched several different reaction videos. There appear to be two different versions of the trailer, which surprised me. You're watching what I call version 2. Only one other video watches this version. All the other reaction videos I've watched, watch what I call version 1 just because it's watched by so many other KZbinrs.

As someone who has seen the musical, I think they should end part 1 with “One Short Day.” That would be better than ending it with “Defying Gravity.”

I thought the graphics were gonna be shit. Yearrrrrs back when a movie was being discussed, I said that they should do claymation or something animated. But this actually looks pretty great! (There was one messy part in the early scene of Glinda on the boat-the editing of/around Ariana was strange. But maybe that is an online quality thing? idk) I’ve watched maybe 3 or 4 movies in the last 5 years, and this one will be joining that list. I simply cannot deny my desire to see it.

I'm a big fan of the wicked soundtrack, but didn't get free tickets for it so haven't seen it in theaters. Still, the movie looks great. My only worry is that the people I saw it with who weren't already interested didn't seem all that impressed by this trailer.

Thank you... the age descrepancy bewteen them is the first thing I noticed. Ariana looks like she could be 18 but Cynthia does indeed look much older than her. I don't think you need 18 year olds to play 18 year old characters... if they both looked 25 it wouldn't stand out as much and suspension of disbelief would allow us to gloss over their actual age. But its the difference between them in appearance that stands out. I had the same issue with the Dear Evan Hansen movie.... Ben Platt playing a teenager while being almost 30 wasn't so much of an issue, but for the fact that all his co stars looked age appropriate, which made him look so much older. He stuck out like a sore thumb. A very old sore thumb. This isn't nearly as bad as that, I don't think it will ruin the movie in the same way it did for DEH.... but it is noticeable.

The final belt in Defying Gravity already turned me off to the movie. It sounds to Diva/Pop and just doesn’t HIT the emotions of the stage production. I’ve watched the OG stage production on Broadway and WestEnd. I just don’t know. Not feeling it.
