What about the customers wanting the 'homeboy hookup' or a discount nobody else is getting...knowing the business just opened up and they might not be fully staffed? Having these super unrealistic expectations for customer service as well? I patronize lots of black businesses in ATL and have very few issues. People need to stop running out to the latest 'hot' business and expecting to be catered to with personalized service when the place is slammed.

As an owner of a mobile oil change service (we come to you) located in Miami. I found this pod cast to be very interesting. I find that unless you are an established business, trust is harder to gain. As was stated, there are many other factors that hinders that interaction, past experience, marketing, supply prices, and our own expectations of the business services. If the customer service is not the issue, lets remember that a business has to start somewhere.

Black patrons (sometimes), unfortunately, expect black business owners to run their establishments on a buddy system. We want discounts, free goods and services, and wanna be treated like we're doing the business a favor. I know no one wants to admit it, but it's true. You would never walk in gucci and ask for a hook-up, but you will do it to your homeboy who just started making t-shirts. We don't give black businesses the same respect, grace, or etiquette we give others as well. McDonald's can mess your order up 50/11 times you'll keep going back. A black restaurant that's brand new, overwhelmed, and under-staffed: they make one mistake we running to Yelp or Google reviews trying to get them shutdown. We have to look in the mirror and do better as a people. But in the same breath, some of these establishments give terrible customer service and think we're supposed to give them our business just because it's black-owned. We all gotta take some accountability as a whole to fix the issue.

Black owned restaurants in Chicago, especially newer ones that popped after PPP loans- can exhibit some of the worst customer service you’d ever encounter! A lot of them get visibly frustrated about questions regarding menu items, cheap out on portions, and try to cut corners on packaging/ utensils. I only go to the black restaurants that’s been around forever and don’t have multiple locations. I will travel far for excellent food and great customer service. I will also 1 star yo azz on Yelp/Google if you wasted my time and money

Great conversation from both sides! I feel as though sometimes the customer service can be lacking from black businesses and sometimes black business owners want their customers to accept the lack of service. Having lower quality product is one thing. Which can be caused by lack of capital and cost, but it doesn't take extra capital to provide quality service to your customers. For the product that is lacking, I feel as though the service should be the thing that makes up for that. Also, reinvest profits into the community. Help build that cycle between the community, customer and business to create a great economic impact within the community.

I was car shopping about 15 years ago. I decided to patronize the new car dealership in the neighborhood. I love shopping with my people. This guy saw all my naivety from my whole entire life in my face because he tried me. Told me to give him all the money I had for a down payment that day and pay $1000 a month for the next 3 payments (and then start paying regular payments). I held it together and told him I'd be right back like I was going to the bank. He was so sure of himself that he told me if I didn't come right back that I was going to miss out. About 30 later he must've started realizing he fck'd up because he started blowing my phone up to come back and let's work something out.😂 Hell naw!!

I'm a black business owner however, before I owned my business I was an employee of many other corporations. Every business that thrives puts the customer service first, businesses that don't put customer service first, Fail.. It's simple. We don't have to add race to the matter if we just understand that simple part. The customer service is first because it's the only part of company Branding that you have direct influence and control over everyday... The customer service is first because without buyers, you have no sales and without sales you have no business. Customer Service is a required minimum expectation for success. (If you don't feel like doing performing customer service is something you like doing, just quit the industry). But what you will find is, Life is about Service to others.

See someone with something new & we trying to figure out how they got the money 💰 it’s a lot of jealousy & envy among us. On the other side we have some black business owners that like to play a lot & that rubs me the wrong way. I’m going to say exactly what Wick said. I gave a black female doctor 👩🏽⚕️ a try, a chance & was very disappointed ☹️ because once she entered the room automatically started talking hood to me! I couldn’t believe it so I let her know that her services were no longer needed & asked for another female doctor 👩🏽⚕️ that wasn’t black. Went to a black restaurant placed a carry out order & he had the nerve to ask me if I was going to leave a tip in that cup on the counter smh While he handed me my order. Never went back. I do the same with any business if they rub me the wrong way or allow foolish amongst the worker I never spend money there again. Great conversation.

Has anyone ever been to a jamaican restaurant and they are out of rice? Have you ever been to one and they say we are out of jerk chicken? I have had that happen many times and no apologies were made. Those are two things you must always have in a jamaican restaurant. We seem to think that we can do each other any kind of way and you just have to deal with. We show everybody else respect except each other. Thats why it bugs me to go into the hood and watch all these other nationalities own all the stores without much drama and live very comfortably off of our money. I worked in an occupation that I did work in different restaurants everyday and if I had to go out to my truck or something, the vehicles that they were taking restaurant supplies out of were always something like a lexus, bmw or benz suv. Using those as a hoopty. I would just shake my head. Very often they were only in their twenties. I wouldn't be mad at them I would just think to myself , why can't we do that?

I don't hate on black businesses. I give my honest assessment. If it's good then I give credit. If it's bad then I criticize. A lot of black folks have a problem giving good customer service. Every ninja is a king or queen in their mind and kings and queens don't serve. That's not the right attitude to have if you work or have a business that's customer service based. I will drive out of my way and pay extra for good customer service. It doesn't matter the race of the people. We treat each other as less than. It goes both ways. I've seen businesses give white folks better service than black folks and I've seen black customers give black folks a harder time than they give other folks.
