5:48 I disagree with Nimona accidentally setting the village on fire; that was the fault of the villagers themselves. Someone threw a torch at her, it bounced off, landed on some flammable material, and then it spreads. It's been pointed out that there's a metaphor behind that scene; is that when we attack someone else for their "otherness", it comes back around and we end up hurting our own humanity. That rings especially true for the Director.

You didn't pay attention to the flash-back sequence, Nimona did NOT accidentally start that fire, someone threw a torch at her back while she was trying to break free of the villagers attacking her. The torch bounced off her back, and landed in a hay wagon and spread from there. She was just a little girl that wound up with very long life and shapeshifting powers, not wanting anything more than to have a friend and not be called a monster simply because she was different.

Abrosious not trusting Ballister and believing the director at first is perfectly justified since he's ingrained in the system of knights. But he never has a conflict of purpose his job is to protect the city and its people as soon as he realized the direct IS the threat he stands up to her.

Mentally or physically? Because I don't think we get much of a comparison with the note worthy knights physical powers and we don't really see the director do anything physical so it could be hard to tell for a lot of them whose string if to go with physical. Mental on the other hand we can see easier divides between stronger and weaker wills and with the only question between about how to rank the more flexible vs more ridged like Ambrosius and bully guy. Am did have a psychotic breakdown but ultimately proved to be more flexible and will to see things differently But the bully guy never brings down because if him simple desires at the time and didn't seem as likely to have tried to do the director without Am when he developed after his break down just now willing to comply and be easily manipulated to simple ideals and hierarchy he grew up with like everyone else

I don't think there's actually an evil character in Nimona. As cruel, selfish, and inconsiderate as the Director was, she was kind of living in her own shadow of fear that turned to hatred of "the monster" and that also led her to become obsessed with wiping it out.

I saw that in a few KZbin videos earlier. A heavily tattooed guy was judged as a violent asshole just because of being heavily tattooed. He covered his tattoos with some makeup, and everyone didn't judge him as violent. It's sad. Why does having heavy tattoos equal you being a violent jerk? It happened with bikers too. I think this video has probably been viewed a lot, but a cinema was filled with bikers; only 2 seats were free. Couples would enter, and would either immediately walk out thinking the place is evil, or would sit and all the bikers would cheer happily that the people weren't so quick to judge. That's amusing to watch. All these big bikers being like "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah! Wooooooooooooooooo!" and giving them a drink. Haha. Another showed a girl dressing in different dress styles. Dressing up while looking "rich", everyone would worry about her and try to help her find her family. Dressing up in ragged "poor" clothing, people would ignore her, or tell her to get lost. Why do looks matter so much? Why judge someone by looks alone? Why is Nimona a monster just because of her ability to transform? If people in real life could have...superpowers in a way, would we judge them immediately just because they have a power we don't understand? If someone had Spider-Man's powers, but you knew nothing else about that person, would you be comfortable around them because hey! It's Spider-Man! Or would you want to see how they act because who knows what this person is like? Maybe they're a dick. Maybe they'll use the Spider-Man powers to do evil things, like robbery or kidnapping...you wouldn't know, would you? Why judge on looks alone?

Sadly Nimona was asexual and Ballester was gay, if you think about it, she wasn't even human anymore, so unless she could find others like her, she was doomed to a long and lonely life. She became a shapeshifter when she was only 6 (as to her basic form), and would of been stuck like that forever if she couldn't shapeshift. An immortal shapeshifter that couldn't truly age could marry someone, but then they would age and die, leaving her alone again. It was made clear she could let herself die at least. I for one would not want to be immortal, being alive even after the sun went supernova and was stuck hurtling through space for thousands of years, waiting to crash into another planet, only to find you are STILL alone there as well. And still an outcast if by some lucky chance there were some kind of people on it.

Queen Valerin: Neutral Good. Tries to make a better society, even if it flies in the face of the rules she has been raised to uphold. Ballister Boldheart: Lawful Good. His goodness is undeniable, as is his adherence to principles. At first those of the evil empire he served but, as a part of his character development, he learns to prioritize his own, superior, personal code higher than that. Nimona: Neutral Evil to Neutral Good. It's undeniable that, at the start of the movie, Nimona is at her lowest point, being fully willing to nigh-indiscriminately lash out at the world around her. As a part of her character development, however, she grows out of vengeance, and into the the fact that all she really wants is to belong. And once Ballister makes her feel like she has a place where she belongs, she becomes more focused on tearing down the institutional evil that denied her and Ballister their right to belong. Diego: True Neutral or Neutral Good. Embraces the changes that Queen Valerin wants to impose and idolizes Ballister, but combines it with a lack of principles and an unwillingness to put himself out there for the sake of the greater good unprompted. Ambrosius Goldenloin: Lawful Good. The main conflict within Ambrosius as a character stems from the philosophical question "To be lawful, or to be good?" As things would have it, he is torn between two different kinds of Lawful (loyalty to the kingdom, or loyalty to Ballister) as well as two different kinds of Good (what the teachings of Gloreth/The Institute have taught him is good -- which is actually some pretty bad stuff, and what he knows in his heart is good). But a hint to where his true loyalties lie are present from the very start: Though a descendant of Gloreth and the system's sweetheart, he accepted Ballister as a Knight. Gloreth: Neutral Good to Lawful Neutral. Started out as an open-minded child, willing to embrace and accept even Nimona. Went on to comply with the scared adults who taught her to fear and hate... Still, what she became the symbol of is ultimately just an embellishment: She wasn't a noble, she was a commoner. She wasn't a brave knight, just a frightened child. She didn't stab any monster in the heart, she just broke the heart of her friend. Not anywhere near the evil that the Institute would become. Todd: True Neutral or Lawful Evil. Ultimately it comes down to if you think a petty bully is bad enough to be considered evil or not, as well as whether you think he has/follows/is capable of understanding any principles above "Todd rules!" He has obviously gotten his serving of humble pie by the last time we see him, but he's still not the kinda guy I'd ever want to see on law enforcement. The Director: Lawful Evil. Rigidly obsessed with the rules and fiercely opposed to/outright fearful of change, to the point that she conflates herself with the kingdom itself. That fanaticism makes her willing to kill anyone who'd side with "the monster." Even if that's _everyone in the entire kingdom._ The Director embodies everything that is bad and wrong (badong) about religious conservatism.

@@TunaBear64 Ah. I see. You think character alignment is related to attitude, or adherence to/rejection of conformity. It's a pretty common mistake tbh. (So common, in fact, that I sometimes suspect that most people use the incorrect definition rather than the proper one.) In truth, however, character alignment is actually about what kind of ethos a person adheres to: A person who is unfettered by way of having no personal rules of their own, or is willing to go against their professed personal rules for the sake of convenience, is the _actual_ definition of Chaotic... By contrast, let's take Robin Hood as an example: Though he eschewed the laws of the land, (by way of stealing and stuff,) as well as other people's ideas of right and wrong, (dude sent quite a few men of the church to their graves,) he still did what he thought was right in adherence to a set of personal rules, such as "take from the rich, give to the poor", "do no harm to yeomen", "do no harm to women", etc, and he was utterly devoted to those personal rules. So even though he didn't care about the rules or what others thought was right, he would still qualify as Lawful. This is also why I regard Nimona as Neutral: She clearly has personal rules, as evidenced by, for example, her reaction after Diego the Squire shows her and Bal the footage of the Director switching out Bal's sword: She insists that they should upload the video, publicly expose the injustice, and clear Bal's name. However, in response to Bal objecting to this, as publicly exposing the Director could hurt the Institute, she displays flexibility in her rules: Though she's clearly _not_ a fan of Ballister wanting to employ subterfuge to keep the scandal out of the public's eyes, and though she makes clear that she doesn't think confronting Ambrosius and the Director personally is going to work out for Ballister, she's still willing to forgo what she feels is the right way of going about this whole situation and instead give Bal's more covert method a go.
