If you want some rather good looking moss, you can get some ground sawdust or flocking, mix with some of the coarser version and paint/dye it in greens, then mix into a paste with either white glue or mod podge and apply with a cheap brush, when it dries, add a bit of a drybrush with a brighter green and seal it with a spray. I haven't used it on full sized foam pieces, but I have on other things for decor and with miniatures.

This helps a lot! Great video! I heard you said it took lots of time to carve the words! What I do is make a stencil on my silhouette and put that on the tombstone then spray paint over it! It melts away the foam in the certain spot inside the words and makes an organic shape! And it’s so easy! Again, great video!

For a lichen type moss, I ground down the Spanish moss you get from art craft stores with pistol and mortar and then sprinkled it over areas of the tombstone that I coated with modge podge. I also sprinkled dirt afterwards to fill in any areas for bonus points.

Great idea! Additionally, you may consider making a rough paste with the dried ground moss and glue/mod podge, and when it dries it will be rigid and not as susceptible to flaking off? I know with miniatures, people often soak the model making foam foliage in glue so it holds its shape and doesnt fall off.

Studsonstudios does modpodge and model flocking and that always looks convincing. But I wanna try the plastic Spanish moss in a blender like you mentioned.

We had the same issue with securing our headstones out here in Clovus, NM... so windy, esp this time of year! We secured metal brackets to the back and used wooden dowels to stake in the ground... the wind would rattle them as they "rocked" back and forth to add like a creepy sound and make it look like something underneath was shaking them!

Moss- glue small pencil shavings to your surface. (The kind that come out of the wall mounted school pencil sharpeners, or potentially a desktop electric one) You may want to add a couple layers. Once dry saturate with glue/water mixture to help secure. Color them green before or after. Some different shades of green dry brushed on really sells it

HOBBY FLOCKING FOR MOSS. I CANNOT preach about it enough 🤣 mix some mod podge and isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle to let the glue flow better, light spray and dust on accordingly. I've made some dioramas and I can't get enough of the stuff haha

I absolutely love these makeover videos, because you help teach us to make great custom decorations out of partially manufactured items. I don't have the time or the skill to make all the decorations from scratch, such as your custom tombstones from the construction foam, but I most definitely can ugly up a Halloween decoration with some letter stickers, paint and drylok.

I make moss with floral sponges and paint. Chop the up in a food processor or tear them. If you cut the edges are too straight. Then you paint them with different colors of acrylic. I like to put the in a bucket and stir the colors in. Let dry, shred smaller and paint again. Let dray then glue wherever you like

Saw dust flocking makes great mossy texture especially if you make like 3 or 4 colors seperatly then when dry you mix them together, like for example one thats forrest green, one thats like a burnt sienna, one thats like a chocolate brown, one thats a cammo green and maybe one thats a cool grey. When you have them dry you can just pop them in a blender and make them in to a finer dust if need be, and just use white pva glue and layer them untill they look cool and natural. You can use other colors too if you want moulds and stuff like that too of course.

For moss stuff I just grind up dried moss from your local gardening supply shop. Sphagnum moss, spanish moss etc, put it in a bowl with clear elmers glue and just "paint" it on. Bonus: you can mix various paints to get the perfect colors for your moss.

I also was never able to "make" moss, and ended up going to my local crafts store (that starts with an "M") and buying their variety moss in packets. It was less 'DIY' but it got my druid staff project completed. Also flocking works, like is used in railroad modeling or ttrpg terrain. Depends on the look you want. Great work as always.

I made big wood stakes and hammered them into the ground then duct taped the back of the gravestone to the wood stake. 3 years and counting on some of those stakes. Also smaller grave stones work exactly the same and it's easy clean and quick. Plus you can use just about any kind of stick or scrap wood pieces.

Something else that works really well for making tombstones stay in the ground are jumbo bamboo skewers. You can usually get 20 or more in a package. Just sharpen the other end with a pencil sharpener and jam them in there, works like a champ!

I've done moss with fake snow, that comes in spray cans. It makes pretty nice flake texture, with good volume. A little bit of paint, and it really looks like moss!

In the theater sometimes they use a thick mixture of larger sawdust particles and glue to simulate mossy growth. It's then painted in moss like colors to achieve the desired affect

For Moss, I’ve had great results with wood glue, watered down and dryer lint! Mix some green craft paint in to color to your liking and it works great!

Great video! I just got done making a couple tombstones for neighbors kids. I give them a template and have them design their own and then build them out. For the thinner store bought tombstones I've been attaching 1 inch pink foam and carving it down, texturing and painting it to match. that bulks it out and makes it look more substantial and gives you that extra space for anchors and what not.

A good moss mix is: dryer lint and green paint and glue it on to the tombstone. It works!

I sometimes make fake moss for Christmas decorations and such, and all I use is an old kitchen sponge and some green food colouring, I then pluck the sponge to smithereens and lay it on a waterproof surface in a thin layer, I then mix the colour with water and drips it all over the pieces, rolling, pressing and squeezing them with my hands, and maybe adding some more water and/or colour gives different results and textures (I don’t have any real measure’s for this part of the process, just learn as you go until your moss looks just right), let it rest in a dry and warm place until completely dry - also the top part of the sponge can be used for a more gritty texture. Maybe this will help you out, and thanks for this awesome channel, it always makes my day

a few good ways to make moss: cheapest options: - a green wash (water and green paint, won’t have moss texture) - green paint in an airbrush with a very low psi (makes very fine moss) - actual moss, allow it to grow, can also use chia pet seeds but those will be leafier (may grow mold if grown improperly) - green yarn flocking (cut up green yarn, mix with water and mod podge) more expensive options (look the best, most durable): - real terrain hobby grass flocking mixed with mod podge and water - terrain hobby “creeping ivy” secured with glue a mixture of these together creates nice variety!

Foam flocking would make a great moss. For these large scale projects, probably cheapest to DIY a large batch (videos online how to do this). Then just apply with PVC glue / mod podge, and then do a sealing layer with watered down glue/podge sprayed on.

I went to a gamer store...(one that has all the supplies for board gaming..i.e. trees, characters, grasses ) and they have moss in a jar. Ground up fine to put on a tombstone. Love your channel. Very informative.

Sawdust mixed with greens and browns in a disposable cup. Spread out on a cookie sheet or tin foil. Crumble occasionally as it dries. Very economical and easy to use!

fake foliage green moss powder works fantastic for moss! Sometimes called moss flocking..its not cheap but works a charm for any crafting project where you want moss!

For standing tombstones, I glue a 1x3 to the bottom, and screw a second one to it (forming an X) after Halloween rotate the second board so it stores flat. I would second the flocking for moss (in model railroading hobby shops it called “ground foam”)

An additional tip is to make the pvc tube distance the same on every tombstone you have (say 12 inches) so you can rearrange the tombstones without having to move the rebar. As others have said, the model railroad ground cover foam mixed with glue makes a nice thick moss. Takes some time to dry but seems quite durable.

I've done a number of foam-sculpting projects, professionally. I've actually introduced a LOT of Artists to that same Surform tool. It's one of my most important foam tools, along with a double-edged bread knife, a hacksaw, (people never believe me, the first time I tell them a hacksaw is the best tool for cutting soft cushion foam!) and a blow-dryer. I have NOT yet used a Dremel, like that, so I'm going to have to try that! Also, I need to try Drylock: In the past, I've used things like plaster of Paris mixed with wood glue.

I’ve been using the same store bought tombstones for years. I use the spikes. They work fine, but they tear up the foam. This year I filled in the old holes with spray foam. After drying, I trimmed off the excess and painted. Good as new.

One of the best things about DryLok for stones is that you can tint the brilliant white whatever color you want at the department store. This year, I got cement, grey/blue, and red sandstone tinted DryLok buckets and that TREMENDOUSLY saved on time for tombstone production.

Great video as always! One way to do easy moss is to mix coarse sawdust with some watered down green acrylic paint, let it dry, and then mix that green sawdust with PVA glue and paint it on. When it's dry it looks just like moss!

To make the illusion of moss, Flocking works great. But you would need to carefully spray on some clear weather protection to protect it. Flocking can get messy, so keep that in mind. Light airbrushing of different colored paint also helps add depth to the flocking. Add very mini flowers with some dirt and it'll look more realistic. I cool thing to try us to add additional foam to build up the area first. This way you can add little spider or bee holes.

Additionally; using flocking made up of a variety of earth colors (different tones if greens and browns) may be best, instead of airbrushing the colors on. Look up diorama tutorials for best flocking methods.

MOSS - you can get moss (and other cool plants) in the floral department of craft and hobby stores. You can glue them on using an acrylic gel (dried clear) or paste (you can tint this with acrylic paint, some will also dry clear).

My plastic tombstones have a bottom that unscrews. Took it off and put play sand in a gallon baggie. Stuck it in and then screwed the bottom plate back on. Hope that helps!

You can buy faux/artificial moss or dried moss. Its mostly used for stuff like artificial living walls or plant decoration. But you could easily cut it up and use it as decor on these tombstones.

Another option for sticking tombstones in the ground, you can buy wooden yard stakes or make your own with a stick They also make foam safe construction adhesive you can use with a caulk gun to adhere the wooden stake to the tombstone. I found it easier to have a stake go the height of the tombstone both to have more surface area glued to the tombstone and also to make it easier to hammer it into the ground

As an artist that uses sealant, I've used multiple different kinds. When painting furniture I use basic mod podge which comes in matte and gloss, it's worked perfectly. When I'm painting ceramics, wood, or paper mache I use spray sealant. For plastic projects I use Mr. Super Clear, I've used it for both doll customizing and making horror hockey masks. Not everything needs sealant but I use it as a little extra security.

I have a can of latex house paint that I got from a place that was going out of business. When I opened it I realized that it had no pigment in it. It is just the clear latex base that is in the can before you have your color added to it. So, I decided to try it as a foam sealer and it worked really well. I have been able to use it for multiple years and would suggest it to anyone.

I have added moss to some tombstones and I just used the stuff purchased at a craft store. It holds up OK. I also have another way to keep tombstones from blowing around. I use some 1/4" plain steel rod cut to 18" in length. Sharpen the ends with a rasp and heat them up (not too hot) to melt into the foam to create the holes. This method has worked great over the years and we get some pretty awesome wind here in northern ga in the fall. I haven't had one blow over yet.

there's a ton of great ways to make moss--definitely check craft stores for miniatures or diaramas. They sell bags of moss in a lot of colors that all look very lively and natural. This can cost more though, and the 'scale' of the bits of moss are meant for miniatures and diaramas. some folks also use like..bits of sponges (not the ones with the scrubbers), shredded up in a food processor, and mixed with PVA glue. it takes paint very well, and often gives really cool, natural feeling textures :) the sponge method is often way more cost effective compared to the craft store 'model kit moss'.

One thing I discovered when working with foam and making letters on the tombstones is to make the stencil with the cricut then using black spray paint. The spray paint dissolves the foam and is much easier and quicker than carving. It also colors the letters at the same time to help them stand out. The only thing is you need to practice first in order to discover how light or heavy of a coat you need for the desired result. You can do it as a "carved in" lettering or "raised" lettering too depending on how you use your stencil. When it comes to moss, my suggestion is using dryer lint and several shades of green acrylic paint for making the moss. Just add the paint into the lint, mix with your hands and let dry. Then apply the moss with glue. It may be messy but I think it adds a great effect. Hope this helps! Happy Haunting..

I found that Color Shot “Extra Guacamole” spray paint, using a light touch on the button to spatter the paint, makes a good moss color on tombstones.

A cool decoration in my neighborhood are some bodies hanging by their feet wrapped in spiderwebs. The whole construction is pretty light so when the wind blows, it bangs against the balcony and looks like a live person thrashing around.

A fast way to fasten them down is to drive a 1x2 wood stake into the ground then use steel wire pushed through the grave stone and wrapped around the stake. Use the flat part of the stake against the back of the gravestone. You can paint the little piece of wire that's visible from the front if you wish. It's super quick to setup and tear down, and wont blow over before your house does.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Halloween memories. A friends and I were throwing a party and we had the ideal that we would make styrofoam tombstones for each of our guest - as kind of a party favor they could take home with them when they left the party. We spent months doing about 40 of them - each a unique design for the guest. We used all sorts of tools like exacto-knives for cutting out the lettering and hot knives for shaping and 'weathering' the tombstone. We did both positive and negative reliefs for the lettering and designs. It took us like a week of experimentation for the paint. We of course wanted a stone look to them but we quickly found that any normal spray paint would melt/dissolve the foam. After some trial and error we found that water based spray paints do not melt the styrofoam. Using a black water based paint as a primer allowed us to use the faux stone spray paints. It made the tombstones look fantastic. It has been many, many years since that and I couldn't tell you who made the faux stone paints but I do remember the name of the stone/color that looked the best to us was called "London Fog". It had this dark gray, with random black that would happen. We had a lot of impressed guests that halloween party.

Use Spanish moss. You can spray it with a preservative and make it kind of weather proof and also make it last for years to come. Glue in place with mod podge

For the moss, I feel like you could take all the scrap crumbly foam sprinkles from phase one of the project, roll them around in some drab green paint, and then glue them on at the end

A great way to do moss is to get some moss from like the hobby store with the fake plant stuff and you can glue some on in a way it would naturally grow on a stone, I did the same trick to spice up the bland tombstone of Pam v. Aka Jason's mom and it looks amazing.

Static grass and it's applicator are a great way for moss, it's used for models and things like dioramas; it's pretty neat, looks great, and there's some pretty cheap options out there for it too

I use Remesh for my tombstones.. its a concrete steel reinforcing mesh with 6x6 squares.. it can be cut and trimmed to different sizes and hot clued to the back... the hot glue will melt some of the styrofoam of the tombstone and bond it together... use caution though.. too much hot glue WILL melt right through the tombstone if you use to much.. a little bit really does go along way with this method

An easy and durable way is to get flocking, (or make your own flocking) and mix it with modpodge and just slap it on wherever you like! Not as messy, and you can put the moss exactly where you want it, and it's durable/wont flake off. Alternatively, can make your own flocking with foam, and even saw dust!

Awesome job on the Tombstone Makeover. For standing up my tombstones, I put a point on a thin wooden stake then glue velcro to the wooden stake and the back of the tombstone. I can pound the wooden stake into the ground, then just press the tombstone to the velcro coverd wooden stake.

For moss, I just use model railroad scenery moss. Tombstones look great! I thought you guys were going to do something rebar-y for placing the tombstones, thought about that in the past, now you've confirmed its a good way to go. I'll be changing mine over. Great tips!

the simplest way to do moss would be moss flocking. though it can look very clean so maybe something worth doing some experimenting with different flocking mediums and see what effects you can create.

For Moss? Possibly Clump Foliage. I use it on 28mm scenery, so might be a bit small, or take forever. If not, a Textured Base Paint from the Citadel Range, washed and drybrushed suitably could make for half decent lichen, which is more likely on old gravestones.

A good miss is glue gun glue and a hair dryer on high. Blow the wet drips to make cobwebs or thin glue like between project that’s always leaks from old guns and ball those strings up and glue them in place it may be hard to color them but it works well !

Idea for the moss. Diorama makers sometimes use an stetic machine with loose fake grass inside. The machine has pins that you put it the foam at the spot that you want the grass put some glue under it. Then you turn it on. The static makes the grass stand upright it look really cool. For moss you can get a moss green paint and add a little coffee grounds or sand/small pebbles to it if you don’t want to use coffee. ☺️

Think about adding tall grass around tube stone. Its dried plant that last a while. More then moss

I bought moss on Amazon that was like $20 for a pound that lasted me two years, and I don’t know how many tombstones, pillars, and monuments. But for just quick and dirty touchups in areas that don’t need to be amazing, the dollar stores sell bags in their craft/floral areas. This year I tried a couple techniques for lichen. Oatmeal in papier-mâché (inspired by your cauldron) didn’t come out as well as I hoped. But mixing paint and plaster of Paris so it was still mostly dry made some nice texture. I think next year I might try corn flakes instead.

I'm unsure if this will really fully work for moss but for making some type of growth for a project I made I used brushed out yarn and just random craft glue I had lying around. I mixed those 2 together and then stuck them the way I wanted on the doll I was working on. Maybe you could create a moss like texture if you cut the brushed out yarn into tiny little pieces and then mix them with glue and then put them on the places you want moss. A way to brush out the yarn is to first get yarn that isn't too tight in like the way it's swirled around to become the thread of yarn and then cut multiple pieces of yarn the length you want it to be and then put it on a stick together so you can then start brushing it out with a pet brush. In case that what I'm saying is too complicated I highly recommend searching how to make a yarn wig for dolls and in there it most likely is explained how to brush out the yarn.

For the moss, I recommend pencil shavings and green paint, then mix that with some sort of glue. Other options are just miniature model grasses and vines. Chop them up and glue em in.

Take some Spanish Moss and grind it up and mix the moss with some glue or mod podge so you can clump it up in mound shapes or put some glue on the tombstone and sprinkle it on and paint it with some acrylic paint if you want to! Oh great video as always!!!
