I have a corn snake, and I’ve been laughed out of forums for having him in the enclosure I do. It’s not bioactive, but it’s naturalistic with loads of plants and vines, branches, logs, tunnels, and his tanks split into 2 levels. I know he’s not arboreal or a jungle snake, but he LOVES his enclosure. He’s always out and investigating, moving and up and down the 2 levels using the branches, he burrows in his substrate and I’ve never seen him as active as he is since giving him this set up.

I just got my yearling corn snake a 4'x18"x18" and I can't wait to build it up to give her plenty to explore and climb on! Have you had good luck with the plants not getting uprooted? Or do you have the plants in the plastic containers to protect the roots like I've seen some people do? Just looking for suggestions :)
@CrucibleBlack13
@CrucibleBlack13 3 жыл бұрын
@Victoria - Not sure why anyone would laugh at you for taking the time to provide your snake with an enriching environment. Sounds like a sweet setup to me. Despite not technically being considered “arboreal” there are many species that will absolutely take advantage of the elevation. I’m sure he loves the fact you ignored that label in his case and give him the opportunity to explore. Much respect to you,

@@ic3p1ck_ sorry I should have mentioned they were fake plants. I’d love to do real ones but he’s 6ft and loves climbing so would totally trash them! His tank is 6ft wide, 6ft high, and 3ft deep which i know is overkill, and it cost a fortune to decorate something that big, but it’s been so worth it to see him so active. I know people say snakes can’t be “happy” technically, but to me he seems like a happy snake. He uses every inch of his enclosure now, always exploring and hanging off branches. To me if he didn’t like it he would hidden away in one hide all the time and grumpy to handle or just not be thriving like he is. Good luck with your build and your girl. They’re such awesome snakes as a pet 💗
@PeaceCountryExotics
@PeaceCountryExotics 3 жыл бұрын
Something I did think you kinda missed the mark on was explaining what bioactivity is. It’s not just bugs that make it bioactive. You also need plants, lead litter wood, and some would argue fungus to make a true bioactive enclosure. Bioactivity is essentially creating a mini ecosystem in a confined space.
@pyrpyr5Wolf
@pyrpyr5Wolf 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Without plants especially nitrates/nitrites and ammonia will build up and the substrate still needs changing every 8-12 months or it will become a toxic wasteground. For people who struggle with understanding this, it helps to read up on the nitrogen cycle.

@@pyrpyr5Wolf i'm going to set up an enclosure like that soon and while i have a bunch of snake plants and that vine-y ficus thingy that grows like 15m long to plant in there, what are some more plants you would recommend? Does moss count too?
@pyrpyr5Wolf
@pyrpyr5Wolf 2 жыл бұрын
@@sillyjellyfish2421 What animal are you building for? Humid tropical/temperate habitat? Moss sort of counts, but usually only uptakes very small amount of nutrients and most mosses are difficult to keep enough alive they do much. Depending on the species reptile/amphibian there are lots of different easy to grow plant options.

@pyrpyr5Wolf
@pyrpyr5Wolf 2 жыл бұрын
@@sillyjellyfish2421 yes you'll need sturdy plants for sure! The snake plant and Ficus pumila are perfect. Also spider plant, pothos and things like mondo grass or even just Carex grass species do well with trampling and will grow readily in a bp setup. Do remember especially if you get grass you'll need a strong led light. 6500k cold white led strips work of you can't get a hold of jungle dawn light bars. I use grass in my hognose setup and it survives all his digging(he has a burrow directly underneath the Carex testaceous. Best of luck with it, your snake will love it I'm sure!

There are two other new Caledonian geckos that you forgot to include: chameleon geckos and sarasinorum geckos. Saras are the closest relatives to cresties, and can also hybridized with them. They have pretty much identical care, but saras are a bit longer, can grow back their tail, and in my opinion, have much prettier patterning. Chameleon geckos are essentially micro chewies. They only grow to about 4-5 inches, and hang out on sticks in the open all day. They are super cute and wonderful to keep. Both of these species would also thrive in bioactive tanks!

Love this video! I actually have a chahoua/crested hybrid...he's about 1.5 years and boy is he absolutely STUNNING, particularly when fired up. He has an amazing personality and once I can get him out of his enclosure he's not too bad with handling. Sometimes he'll go straight to the top of my head when my hair is in a bun and just chill there haha. I have all of the stuff to build him a custom background and convert his enclosure to bioactive. I did splurge on the BioDude for substrate and some other cool stuff. Now I just need to work up the nerve to do the background. I'm afraid to screw it up...especially since he has a nice expensive PVC enclosure. Nothing but the best for my little dude 💚🦎💚 Now I'm off to eat Ramen noodles for lunch...jk I have enough leftover to splurge for bologna 😉🤣

When I kept crested, chahoua, and leaches, got them all about 12/13 years ago. I kept my leachie and chahoua bioactive. Not many people were keeping that way, in the circle I was in. But i wanted to give it a try. I didn’t do it nearly as good as we do today, but I’m so happy to see how it’s progressed. I got back into the hobby after having to sell my collection when I got divorced almost 7 years ago. So excited to be back in. Animal related items are so much easier to get and holy crap how the crested world has changed. I mean. They aren’t even Rhacs anymore 😅.

Of course you did a video on my favorite thing... bioactive setups. First, you NEVER ruin the list with amphibians. I have success with bioactive setups from the hottest for my uromastyx, to the most humid for my dart frogs. I stand behind The BioDude for all of his different substrates based on the species. As for the clean-up crew, a temperate springtail culture works well for all environments. The dwarf white and dwarf purple work well in frog and gecko enclosures. The Floria mix, powder orange or powder blue work well in drier environments. I do have 15 different species of isopods, but sometimes the larger ones end up being dinner before they can do their jobs. Well, I rambled on enough. Great job and yes would love to see a paladarium build. That is what I will be building for my mossy frogs.

I totally get wanting to save the money but I'm new to bioactive and really don't want to screw it up. Plus it's a time saver. You all do seem to have a lot more access to Arcadia products (substrates, supplements, etc.) up in Canada from what I've seen in some other videos. I can't find any of those products in the US. I do have their UVB lights though 🙂 Hopefully one day you can get BioDude products.

Can you do a video for new keepers in general and especially new ball python keepers. Also how you keep your humidity up in your enclosures? Best heat bulbs for snakes?

since amphibians are included, id say the best thing to put in a bioactive is dart frogs! some species like the powder blue, powder gray, nikita, citronella, cobalt, azureus, and Patricias are super easy to keep, super easy to breed, can buy them as tadpoles and watch them morph which is fun, especially for kids. i make their own fruit fly cultures so i dont rlly need to keep buying their food. as someone who has had freshwater fish for almost 2 decades, they are similar but easier than fish and super entertaining to watch. the highlight of your day will be feeding them i guarantee.

the blue tongue skink looks like a boa that turned in to a lizard slowly and stopped half way in morph because he was to lazy to finish it. all jokes aside they are lovely animals iv had the wonderful opportunity to hold one a few times.

Loving the videos as always! Thank you for putting out such quality information. I know ball pythons are popular and there are many videos on them, but it would be great to have another video on them. I know you did one this year but maybe a show and tell of yours? Or maybe a live stream with a convo on them. From a fan of stand point. Idk. Just an idea. Thanks again!

You should consider doing a top 5 bioactive setups with invertebrates like Emperor or Asian Forest Scorpions, etc. Also, dart frogs would've easily made the top of this list!

The huge problem with bioactives is that SO many people are saying it's a "takes care of itself enclosure"! SO many people believe that because they were told so, even good keepers have given that idea (trying to convince people to convert). I like the honest approach. Tell them what to expect and that it's not ideal for all animals. Saying, you can, does not mean you should! You can have a more humid, natural enclosure that might require more specialized care depending on how far you go with it. Certain plants need higher uv lighting, it might not work for your animal. You will need to clean it up, you just might not need to deep clean as much. Also bugs, if you want a ecosystem that might not always stay contained where you want them, they are fun to watch. There's more but I just wish more people would be honest about bioactive.
