Blue tongue skinks are one of the best pet lizards we have ever covered on this channel. That said, making non-tropical bio-active enclosures is a new one for me. Using a Zen Habitats PVC enclosure, I try a few experiments in my attempt to build the perfect blue tongue enclosure.

I have this exact enclosure for my Indonesian blue tongue skink. Easy to put together, and my skink loves it. This enclose comes with a humidity shield, plexiglass shield that fits on top of the screen and covers about 3/4 of the top. Helps keep humidity in. I must spray down my skink’s enclosure every other day, I do live in New Mexico (a very dry place). Great video Clint!

Hey Clint, I have had my two Northerns in bioactive since I’ve had them. And they are thriving! When I got my girl she had been having trouble shedding to the point where she has lost toes ( this is the way she came to me). Soaking her during shed didn’t help, Knowing there was a problem I had to come up with a solution and bioactive was it! Now her sheds are perfect and they both love moving in amongst the plants, ( each in their own enclosure) it also helps when I take them outside because the smells and textures are similar, they don’t freak out. When you can do it, bioactive is the way to go because it is so good for their mind and body. 💕you all from Toronto!

Hi, I know your comment was a year ago, up in getting a blue tongue skink soon and I was thinking of using a bio active enclosure. Would you mind if I asked you about how go about cleaning the tank? Eg should you take it all out and swap it out for new stuff, and if yes how often?
@sandraezesky5310
@sandraezesky5310 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrOhSchnitzel that’s the beauty of it, you just do a spot cleaning when needed, such as large pieces of shed or manure. Otherwise, wipe down the glass weekly. It is advised that the enclosure be cleared out once a year and redone, in my opinion this is to thin down the cleanup crew population ( isopods, spring tales, millipedes and earth worms) also to loosen the soil around the plant roots. Fortunately I didn’t need to do that because my kids were not easy on the plants I had in there so, I replaced them often. As for the crew, that was no problem. As some were born others died, there was no over crowding. I had a good balance. If given the choice I would only do bio active for any reptile, it is so good for their physical and emotional health and the keepers as well. Imagine, it’s -26 Celsius in January outside but in your reptile room it’s +23 Celsius with full spectrum lights blaring in all their glory. It is magnificent having summer all year long as I am sure everyone living in the south can attest to. As for the plants, I have had success with geraniums, hibiscus, philodendron, and coleus. The stems are sturdy and the lowest leaves are a little bit higher than the skinks so they don’t crush them. Now I am trying oregano and basil for my benefit and it seems to be ok for the kids. I was worried it might bother their skin but it hasn’t. If you have any other questions I’d be happy to answer, cheers!
@MrOhSchnitzel

@@sandraezesky5310 thank you so much for taking the time to reply, all this information was extremely helpful. I couldn’t find a lot of information online about the upkeep of them. If you don’t mind could I also ask what clean up crew you use? Eg. Have you used any worms or anything like that? I live in South Australia so it’s not as easy to find many of the conning clean up cress, such as isopods. Also if you don’t mind me asking were there ever any problems with the tank smelling?
@sandraezesky5310
@sandraezesky5310 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrOhSchnitzel Hi, to answer your last question about the tank smelling…no they do not. Maybe for a couple of minutes after someone had a bowel movement but otherwise they never did. In the dead of winter I put my whole head in the enclosure and breath deep, inside it smelled like summer. After I watered the plants it would then smell like the garden after a rain. As for the clean up crew, I am fortunate in that my garden is organic so I was able to dig soil from there and with it earth worms millipedes and isopods as well as some ants and spiders. If you’re so fortunate too then I suggest you do the same, you will probably pick up some as you shovel, if not then your neighborhood reptile store should be able to supply them. Have you got your enclosure yet? If you haven’t then I suggest an enclosure with height. I did a lot of research before I got my Northerners and not once did I come across anything that said they liked to climb, in fact it was said they weren’t good climbers and preferred not too. But two of my three are excellent climbers, one of them sleeps in the bottom drawer of my dresser and has to climb the cat carrier to get in the other made it to the third shelf from the bottom using a combination of boxes, he spent a couple of days sleeping there under a fleece blanket then got down on his own when he was ready. My enclosures are 35x26x18 roughly and they use all of it (when they decide they want to spend time in there)They have logs piled safely so they can climb on or through them to get the temperature they need. But up until recently mostly they free range in the room ( use caution with this and always with supervision). If this is too much information or you have more questions let me know. Hey are you in the area affected by the riots? How are things now? I haven’t seen any more news reports about the riots for a month or two did you manage to stay safe? And everyone you care about? Cheers from Sandra
@MrOhSchnitzel

@@sandraezesky5310 once again, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. It’s definitely not too much information, I’m still in the buying supplies phase and am grateful for any information I can get. That’s why I’m asking so many questions. I want to make sure I’m as prepared as I can be before taking over the care for another living thing. Thank you for the information. I don’t trust that my soil is chemical free (I’m not sure what’s been used and what hasn’t), so I’ll do some more research about what’s available in the way of soil and clean up crew. That’s a relief, smell was one problem I was worried about as the tank will be kept close to where we are most of the time and where we eat. As for the riots, I’m not quite sure what riots you mean. But my family and I aren’t in any big cities, so we are fortunate enough to miss the protestors and riots. South Australia don’t get many riots, they tend to happen in the bigger states such as Canberra (where our main parliament is), or Melbourne. Also my state is awful at giving us news of what’s going on inside the state and country. But thank you for your concern.

@gabriellia7180
@gabriellia7180 3 жыл бұрын
I would def buy their bio-basin to keep the dirt and moisture from seeping into the gaps. It's 6inches tall so it keeps all dirt in. Plus when you need to remove dirt, its easier to clean and get out. So you don't have dirt stuck in the gaps and moisture growing in there.

What fascinated me most about this video was the idea of the substrate shield that I will definitely try to recreate and add so nothing flies out when I open the tank for him. Is it possible to do a video on the smooth/rough green grass snake? In general I love animals and learning about them. Your channel has made me consider getting a snake in the future. When I was a kid, I had an experience with a green grass snake but haven’t seen any since, but I’ve always remembered how cool it was! I had never seen another type of snake other than the common garder snake up to that point. Tbh other than in the western part of my state, I didn’t even know we had other species until I came across the green grass snake. Since then, I’ve learned we have a few more species than I thought lol. I absolutely love this channel! Even if it’s spiders (which I’m terrified of, except Lucas) or something else other than reptiles. I just love learning and seeing animals and having them shown in different light than how many might feel about them while still being honest and realistic about what to expect. Because of this, it has helped me become more comfortable with animals I’ve had some fear or phobia about. I actually use to have a mild fear of snakes, but it’s much improved since watching your channel. I don’t think I’ll ever be totally comfortable with spiders or tarantulas, but I’m glad to learn about them from you and other channels which has helped me improve my phobia. I use to struggle even looking at pictures of spiders but now I can watch videos of them and maybe even be in the same room as one. Thank you so much for teaching people about so many incredible animals! 🙂

Happy national talk like a pirate day! Arg!! Awesome set up for this little skink, I'm considering doing a semi arid bioactive enclosure for my rescue beardie once he gets more used to me!

There are basically 2 types of acrylic. You have what's more or less a 2 part epoxy, which is cheaper and easier to work with. It can also be extruded. It's cheap and user-friendly. It's also cheap, which means less durability and hardness. Then you have cast acrylic, which is much more like(and technically factually true)closer to petroleum based glass. It's much harder and is cast much like liquid metal and cured over some length of time. It's much higher quality and can actually be machined and structural. That being said, it is still more easily scratched than glass, but it's the next best alternative and can be machined to exact measurements. I'm a facilities manager for a cast acrylic factory, I've been there 11 years now and have literally run the entire place front to back, and every job in between. Up to and including daily operations for like 6 months, but I hated that 🤣. I like my job in case you can't tell 😂

Great looking enclosure, the only thing I'd be concerned about is that with the substrate dam, the opening looks very narrow and awkward, a taller enclosure like the 24" high model might be more convenient for cage maintenance.

I pretty much much did the same exact thing for my halmahera BTS substrate wise but I was restricted on space because I only have a 3-foot enclosure currently until I can either build a new one or buy one :)

My northern passed away recently and my stepmom secretly got me a new one but he's an indonesian so what I have doesn't really work I was planning on doing a bioactive set up with this exact cage just a lot wetter using their "bio-basin" bag. This video couldn't of come to me at a better time.

Hey Clint I caught six lined racerunners a couple months ago and I have them in a 40 gallon as of now and they are probably the coolest pets I have or ever had. The act like monitors and they have that awesome formed tongue and for a small lizard especially wild caught they aren’t scared of people and I can even pick them up and they will chill on your hand as long as you don’t move super fast or scare them. I think you should research about them and possibly do a video on them. The hardest part about them is what they need for care as they aren’t popular and little is known about them

I'd love to see a video about a uromastyx enclosure. In my research, I've found that there are A LOT of opinions out there. That's a great looking enclosure and a beautiful skink!

Well hi there! One of my favorite species of lizard is pretty unknown to the reptile community and I was wondering if you could do a video on them! They are called Aeluroscalabotes felinus, aka the Malaysian Cat Gecko! They are called cat geckos because they have retractable claws and curl up like a cat when they sleep! 🥰♥

Alot of gecko keepers have the cat eyed gecko. They are vastly available but mostly wild caught.

I'd love to see an update on this bioactive enclosure, I've been reading how hard it is to keep blue tongues in a bioactive enclosure (because they burrow and more or less bulldoze through everything)

Hey Clint! I've watched a lot of your videos and I'm a reptile and invertebrate enthusiast also and have kept a lot of different species, personally and in various jobs. Just a few species I've noticed a few common species you haven't covered are Berber Skink and Plumed Basilisk and no scorpions at all. Also would be cool if you did one on the Solifugae (Camel Spider) and Sailfin lizard and maybe covered exotic mammals also things like sugar gliders, hedgehogs, bats. Etc Love your style and enthusiasm as it matches my own as i used to have a job presenting and educating with animals.
