This is why the reptile community needs to have a say in regulations being passed on the keeping of hots. There's a big difference between a mangrove snake and a diamondback. Unfortunately most people don't understand that.
@WickensWickedReptiles3 жыл бұрын
for sure
@Riceball013 жыл бұрын
That's never going to happen because most politicians don't care. They have no interest in coming up with a good solution or compromise because that takes too much time and effort. Banning is so much quicker and easier and it makes it look like they're actually doing something. This applies to all hobbies and interests, not just reptile keeping.

@@CandiceLemonSharks A snake is a snake! At least to most people, my mom, for example would kill every snake she sees. She would never kill a 'king snake' because they eat other snakes. Great video I believe rear-fang venomous snakes DO make great pets but unfortunately the general public will always put a bad name on them because of the label "VENOUMOUS". Videos like these I love as it not only showcases these beautiful animals but also highlights the fact that just because it's venomous doesn't mean its dangerous. As you stated in the video its all about how the body reacts to the bites.

I spent my childhood hunting for, catching and getting bit by garters in VT,. Lol, would get back to camp bleeding and musked and smiling from ear to ear as I placed my new acquisitions in their sizable display tank. I had no clue what bioactive was, or that snakes were social and OK to keep together, I was just very lucky and everyone thrived in the long display planter I filled with soil and native plants and rocks and logs and bark etc. I had a few 'pill bugs' and other insects as community guests (no one had ever uttered the word 'bioactive' back then, as far as I know -- think early 70s) -- and I never, ever outgrew my love of garters -- or had any reaction to their bites. And they all tamed down within the first day. I did let them go after summer camp was over. Looking back I realize it was probably not wise to release them again, and I hope the all made it, but there was no one to teach me, I was just super enthusiastic and winging it as I went. Ahhhh, those were the days!

I was very fortunate to be able to work with venomous snakes here and in Australia for anti venom programs. Apparently you need a class I breeder permit --more info in the MO Rules of Department of Conservation Division 10-Conservation Commission Chapter 9-Wildlife Code: Confined Wildlife: Privileges, Permits, Standards the Illinois hobbyist permit form is *stupid* -- it's written to make it looks like you need to have purchased but not yet taken possession of the snake, when in fact you need to complete the application before purchase, but I'm thankful we have a hobbyist class permit now.

I live in Oregon. A house I lived in, in town, I’d come outside and there would be 10 plus garter snakes at any time of day, noticed they’d head back to this vent attached to foundation of home. Then started noticing the vent on the floor inside my home, close to where that outer vent was, there was this “pee” smell, it was gross. Found out later that I probably had a den of garter snakes under my house n that smell was coming from them. I told my mother in law since she owned the house, don’t know if she ever had it taken care of though. But the house we bought after living there I made sure to have the under part of my house checked, to make sure I didn’t have any snake dens. Lol. This was 8 years ago, even thinking about it I swear I can smell that smell, it was not good at all. Also, when we’d mow, we’d end up clipping at least 1 or 2, every time, and it was a small yard, they just were everywhere. I grew up on a farm out in the middle of no where when I was a kid and never seen snakes this much as I did living in that house.

I did make the mistake of putting my hand close to his head as he was tracking the toad I had just put in the tank. Well, it did strike open mouthed at me and got me. It tingled slightly for 10 minutes or so. Other than that, no other effects. The mangrove is a wonderful species and I plan to acquire a pair one day. Space permitting of course. Got an 2020 male and a 2021 female so they're not the biggest yet but they're so cool to watch, pretty smart and the feeding response is just 👌🏻! Garter Snakes are also absolutely amazing, I just don't like how crazy small they're as babies 😅 but otherwise they're maybe the most funny and goofy species ever! Westerns are absolutely beautiful and amazing but they drive me crazy sometimes with their feeding, but nothing too bad 😁 The boiga is the newest to the collection, just got her last Sunday at the european snake day! Great video (as always) some interesting ones on there. Think out of the 5, the only one I'm not the biggest fan of is the Asian Vine. Probably an amazing snake, is more their aesthetics aren't what I look for at all, though the feeding does put me off greatly too! Love my Hognose though, cannot wait until he's shed a few times. He's so small & delicate right now, and as you said, they move differently to many other snakes. Like handling a super-thick worm at the moment, more than a snake! 😄 I'd definitely consider the Garter snakes, as know my dad had one years ago. On the fence with False Water Cobras & Mangrove, more for enclosure size requirements than anything else.

I once had to explain to a very worried non-reptile friend that no, my Garter Snakes won't do any harm I swear - after I had to reply "yes" to their "are they venomous" question.

I have a rufus beaked snake that is an AMAZING rear fanged venomous! He looks like a boomslang, hoods up, scopes, is very interactive and quite handleable. I would love to breed these guys. They have more personality than most snakes, but apparently not great captive breeders(?)

I fell in love with the Eastern Hognose Snake after a neighbor had one slither through her kitchen and then left the house. I saw a video of one playing dead! It's so cute! I tell EVERYONE, even snake haters, to watch an eastern hognose snake play dead and tell me you still hate snakes! It's just too cute! Though I feel bad because the snake is only doing that because it feels threatened. It will even peak around to see if it's all good to come back "alive". If he sees you or feels it's not safe, he will go back to playing dead! With the tongue out and everything! It plays dead really good too!
