Thanks for reviewing the P950. I purchased it based on your P1000 review, as I knew from my research that the features were similar. I am a birder and the P950 fits my purposes almost perfectly. It has GREATLY increased my ability to capture photos that are pleasing to the intended audience - my eye and to the eyes of my friends/family. Thanks again!

I totally agree. I had serious shoulder surgery and as a result could no longer carry and hold My cannon 6oo mm lens so as a result of this I sold up and purchased this camera and boy it did not disappoint in way. I have read reviews good and bad about this camera but for my purpose, Birding I think it is the best that money can buy.

I have the P900. Bought used for $350. I view it as a 2000mm lens that happens to have a camera attached. Purchased to augment my other cameras, where the distance was just too much for the lenses I have. Can't afford the super long lenses that fit the DSLR's. This one fits the bill nicely. Absolutely a point and shoot, but works like a dream. Highly recommend the P900 line for this type of photography. I'd rather work with the camera and get the shot than have no chance because I can't afford the lens.

Great channel’ I purchased the P950 just over a month ago , I’ve taken some incredible shots of the sun setting over the North Atlantic off the outer Hebrides Scotland, I was also following the waxing moon and captured some beautiful shots, I also captured a cruise ship roughly 10 miles. Off the coast , the only challenge was sea haze and having to clean my lens , I’ve got several different cameras , including my trusty D300 that maybe old but it still delivers amazing images ,

Thank you for this video Leigh. I know this video was posted a while ago, but it was very timely. Snowy Owls will soon be migrating into the area I live. There has been a lot in the "bird news" about how Snowy Owls are threatened and the piece was begging photographers not to bait or stress the owls. I have a 400mm lens, but was feeling some guilt about how close I would need to get to the owls to photograph them. After watching your video and doing some research, I ordered a used P950 and it comes tomorrow! I already feel less stress with the idea of not having to stalk Snowy Owls, but keep my distance to respect them while still getting my images. Thanks for helping me find a solution I wouldn't have thought of to help me enjoy bird photography, but also respect the animal's boundaries. Thanks! :)

Nice review. I've had both the P1000 and the P950, the P950 has a place in my camera bag. I use it to get the images I can't get with my current gear, like when I want to completely smear the background in a color that most "normal' lenses can't, this one does it, easy as pie. As you said, there is a learning curve unlike any other because of the small sensor, but I'm ok with the trade off.

I've just started researching this camera. I am a Canon DSLR user taking wildlife shots with a 90d and canon 100-400 L mk2 is lens. However I think there is room in my bag for this camera to take usable video of small birds that are beyond the reach of my 100-400 or 150-600 Sigma lens I have. The video will compliment my sharp stills taken of those birds that are a good bit closer to me. You have convinced me that this would be a good addition, not replacement. I enjoyed your review. I owned the P900 and found the lens to be excellent but eventually sold it because of the poor quality EVF and the frustrating too-slow or too-fast (and buffering) motor drive. I've looked at the P950 and Nikon seems to have fixed the EVF problem but I was wondering if you could tell me about the range of motor drive speeds on the camera. I decided to stick with my Canon SX60hs because it's light, the motor drive seems to be faster with much less buffering and it's digital range produces a surprisingly good image out to about 104X or the 35mm equivalent of 2,184mm's if you stay at ISO 200 or less. The Canon SX70hs has also greatly improved its EVF. These cameras perform better than you might think with just a hint of direct sunlight and low ISO settings. Both cameras are great for nesting bird photos while keeping a respectful distance from the wildlife.

Mate, you can not go wrong with the P950 for your purpose. It has an AUTO mode that will allow you to take great shots straight out of the box while you are learning the other modes and functions. Buying a camera book on the P950 would also be a good idea. The fact that you do not need to buy extra lenses for this camera is brilliant for budget photography. If you get this camera make sure to get a UV filter of the right size ( Tiffen or Hoya etc) to screw on and keep the lens perfectly clean and protected from accidental bumps. Also a good quality tripod is a good idea if you are going to use the extreme end of the zoom; I have a Manfrotto. Have one leg facing the same way as the lens and you should be right, just make sure the legs are tight so it doesn’t fall over. I have the P900 and the P1000 and just love them.

i will get the P950 soonish and couldnt agree more what you said @6:10min to work WITH the cam and not expect it to perform like a full size sensor flagship because it is NOT. turn expectations down. keep ISO at 100. the light isnt enough for 100? then choose another time to get the photo you want where is more light available! throw all images in a denoise software like topaz AI or something fancy. i already told myself to set ISO to 100 and uninstall the physical ISO button. spend some money on a good tripod - problem solved. i checked online images from the 950 or 1000. even ISO 200-400 already starts to get bad fast to a point where you simply cant rescue the photo anymore on computer. dont use the cam for your next professional wildlife shooting job where you need to print it for a galery in 2 meter size and you are all fine. i am looking forward to what it is. keep my shootings at sunny daytimes and enjoy to be lazy sitting in my car while i should be in the middle of a dirty field on the ground to get that photo! cheers°
@patrickfitzgerald28613 жыл бұрын
You can shoot higher ISOs if you use Topaz AI, or better yet DXO Photolab 5 with the "Standard" presets applied, plus their Deep Prime NR. The problem with all tiny sensors is diffraction, which is probably starting to affect the images from this camera even at the largest aperture setting of f/6.5 in the telephoto range.

The challenge l have is l want to upgrade my P900 although l don’t do raw yet but l do videos of kids football and travelling. It’s a great camera. A couple of questions. 1. Everyone says the Sony cyber shot RX10 IV is better because of 1inch sensor and better low light shots however not as much zoom p950. They both appeared to the uninitiated amateur like me both awesome images and l could not tell the difference as both took great photos. AM I missing something here? 2. What would you recommend between the two cameras? 3. Yet l have watched endless biased and unbiased reviews across KZbin on Sony and Nikon and must say l applaud and loved your factual no non sense review it was refreshing and honest review - thank you. I liked how you called out that the sensor although small on p950 took impressive shots as l too thought you weaved some magic with it and thought it presented as better value however being an amateur l would like a professional view on this. Every year, I start watching Nikon P1000 and Nikon P950 reviews to decide if I want to upgrade from my older Nikon B700. But my Nikon B700 is half the weight of the P950, and a 1/3 of the weight of the P1000. When I look at the differences between my 1440mm zoom range of my Nikon B700, it isn’t too far off from the 2000mm or even 3000mm zooms of the P950 and P1000. My Nikon B700 also shoots in RAW and can also film in 4K, and my Nikon B700 has a 20mp sensor, unlike the 16mp on the other two. I do have other cameras like a Sony a7rii and Sony a7s (used for Milky Way photography) and Canon 650d (used for Macro photography), but I’m always curious about the longer 2000mm and 3000mm zooms over my current 1440mm zoom reach 🤔 decisions, decisions. Especially because both the P1000 and P950 are currently on big discounts.
@HR-wd6cw3 жыл бұрын
It's all trade-offs. If you want a larger format camera (ie. FF) you'll need larger glass, and probably heavier glass. So one has to decide what features are most important to them. For me, I could see using something like this if I was taking a walk or a hike and my intention wasn't specifically to do wildlife (if I was gong to do wildlife then I would bring appropriate gear). Or for someone maybe wanting to take casual shots while on vacation. Obviously if you're more serious about photography or the qualify of image you want, you'll use something else, but for what these cost they can be good bargains considering what they can do. They're not designed to replace a FF or APS-C camera. And I could see getting one of these for what I mentioned, but not as a replacement by any means. Just another camera you can add to your arsenal of tools, just like how some people buy a Sony RX100 because they're pocketable. They can't replace a FF camera in most cases, but think about each camera in your kit as a different tool in a toolbox, just how a painter might have different brushes for different types or styles of painting. Yes there are some that can be one-and-done in most cases, like a regular FF or interchangable lens camera, but sometimes its not feasible to carry around that type of camera and a bunch of lenses.

Nice photographs, I own a canon cropped sensor DSLR camera, I want to upgrade my setup for bird and wildlife photography but for that a minimum of 400mm lens is needed which is as costly as Nikon P 950,should I consider purchasing a new lens or this camera. What would you suggest?
@Gynra3 жыл бұрын
The Canon plus telephoto lens will give much better image quality. One needs to balance that against the convenience of an all-in-one zoom with the range of the P950. It's for the individual to decide which is more important to them.
@LeighAndRaymond3 жыл бұрын
As Brian said, this is a personal preference situation. Your Canon may provide better image quality and low light performance (depending on the camera and lens), but this does have that incredible zoom in a relatively compact all-in-one package.

I have traded in my Nikon DSLRs to move to lighter equipment. I have a P950 and recently bought a RX10 4. The P950 gives me images that my D500/sigma 150-600 cannot. It sucks with birds in flight at close to intermediate range. That is why I got the SONY which is excellent for birds in flight in the areas where the P950 is deficient. The d500/Sigma is so easy to use to get really good shots but it weighs a ton and I am too old and decrepit to cart it around all day. To get good results with the P950 needs quite a lot of skill (look at Stafford Fuhs channel). The SONY so far is in many respects easier and gives better quality images but cannot match the P950 in terms of reach. With developments in AI based software for image processing which I have started using I am confident both my new systems will give really high quality results.

I find the 510 OK in good light for documenting the birds here on our farm but in low light or where the birds are amongst branches etc the autofocus is incredibly frustrating and the finder isn't sharp enough to make use of the manual focus (and here in the UK we get lots of days with poor light!). My short-list really consists of the P950 and the Sony RX10 iv. I would be most interested in your thought on the relative merit of these two cameras. Thanks.

p950 Range x sony rx 10 iv - 600 mm with a bigger sensor. If your subjects are relatively close, sony is good. if they are faaaar, p950 is good.

I shoot video with mine but get blurry images when I zoom in to quite a high level, are my settings not configured correctly. Don't ask me at what zoom; it could be from above 1000mm, but others appear to get quality bird shots (video) at 2000mm; why might that be? I'm an amateur and always learning, but I wondered what I might be doing wrong? Any help would be much appreciated. Tony

Hi, I am wondering if you can help me, I want a camera for wildlife shots, birds, deer, etc, and want really good pictures. I did have the p950 set in mind, but now I have seen the Sony fx10 iv. Which camera would be best please? I am totally new to cameras.

Please help if you can. I had my P950 out yesterday and it would not fucus on anything beyond 700/800mm with the auto focus engaged. It, however, did focus while using manual focus in all zoom settings. I called Nikon and the tech told me that I have to use the manual focus beyond 700mm. I find this hard to believe. Thank You Joe B.

I haven’t found a review that employs the hot shoe on the P950/P1000 for off-camera flash; you may not have shown it, but did you happen to try it? I have the smaller brother of the P series (B700) and I use it a lot for birding, but it doesn’t have a hot shoe. I’m only just getting into ocf, so suddenly cameras with hot shoes are now interesting to me 😅. Great review as always!

I did not use the hot shoe on this camera but I expect it works the same as any other camera. :)

I tried a zoom test with a Samsung Galaxy. The specs say 125x zoom, 4K resolution, more than 100 MP. So I put a bottle of vitamins on the counter, walked 10 feet away and zoomed into the small text (back of the bottle), and it was smudged/blurry at best. It was not a good photo. I tried the same on a very old canon bridge camera with only 50x zoom, 1080p resolution, less than 20 MP. The focus was good and the text was clear. The photo was decent enough to post on social media. I guess I just don't understand what these specs mean but I would probably disagree if people are saying phones make any bridge camera obsolete.

Oh miss.. you explained everything so well. Besides im not good at english I understand you well. You have zoom, you have some clarity, but you dont have.. the depth. Thats right. You have some kind of a monocular..but is it a perfect camera? No. It just not. But much of them are not perfect in some ways. So sometimes...it is good choice. For the more demanding player.. is not good choice.

How are the full auto settings? My wife really wants to participate in my photography hobby with me, and also capture pictures of our family. We had a baby in January and she doesn't have the interest, or really time, to learn the mechanics of a serious camera like I did pre baby. Maybe one day, but for now it would be nice to have a capable, but autonomous, camera to pair with our xt4. We do everything from landscape to wildlife photography together
@LeighAndRaymond3 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on the baby! I didn't use Auto but I expect it would work fine in terms of exposure and white balance, but autofocus in Auto, where the camera chooses where to focus, can be iffy. That is the case in most cameras, but even face and eye detect aren't as swift/accurate on this camera.

Under hazy, foggy condition, will Nikon P950 capture clear pictures of objects flying?
