Widebody 944 Project: Rear Coilover Install (Ground Control)

In this episode we install the Ground Control rear coilovers on our widebody 944 project. Now that all four coliovers are on, the car is looking good! We still need to do some adjusting and get an alignment, but the progression is nice!

Nice job. Mounting the shocks upside down reduces unsprung weight so even better. I think I have a solution for the bump steer now as well so will keep you posted.

I just bought an 86 851 with Leda coilovers on the rear...when driving there is a rattling sound in the rear that sounds like its at the top shock mount area on both sides...and the shocks are not completely tight in the mounts.... the "banging" sound going over bumps is pretty loud...any thoughts on this?

Check to see if there are supposed to be spacers between the shock and the mounts, especially if it’s spherical at the top mount

I have 911 Carrera Cup wheels on my 951 and it really doesn't sit very much higher than yours does right now. What forum were you referring to? I've seen those lifts before for like 15 or 1600, I would like to hear your thoughts on it as well, thanks for the video!!

Jack Allen I actually think the ride height is where I want it, although the rear came down an inch or so once we cut the fenders. On the lift, Harbor Freight has one that looks IDENTICAL and it gets good reviews. We’ll be sure to do a video soon. Let me see if I can track down that forum post for the spring rate discussion.

How is the 450lb/550lb (torsion Bar delete)set up working out?

Unfortunately the car still isn’t finished so I don’t know. Based on all my research I still think it’s a great compromise for performance without being too harsh. You may want to go up another 100 lbs or so if you are running slicks. Jason from Paragon Products knows these cars well and can offer better advice.

(dont know if i missed this in the video but...) Did you also remove the torsion bar? and if not would it make a difference if you remove it and go straight coilover (or not if u dont remove the torsion bar). Thanks trying to upgrade my 944 :D

We DID remove the t bars. You can do it either way, all that changes is spring rate on the coilovers. Per my research, the rears (w/o t bars) should be about 100lbs heavier than the front on these cars. Since I had 450# front, i went 550# rear. I believe they came with 175# to be used in conjunction with the t bars. Some people say keep the t bars because the lower shock mount isn’t double shear and it’s dangerous. Personally, I didn’t want to have to mess with indexing the bars and am comfortable with the racers edge upgraded mounts I’m using.

I did Ground Control. I kept the torsion setup to work in conjunction with the coilovers. Per a few of the retailers, and a shop that does 944s, the mounting point on the arm isn't really engineered to manage all the weight and stresses of just the coilover. And, the two are supposed to work fairly well together. I was initially wanting to dump all the torsion stuff too; weight, work, etc. Very interested to hear other opinions, even though this thread is old.

@@tapantera Since the torsion tube is itself a spring, how do you adjust the coilover and ride height? Meaning, will the suspension drop and raise freely with the coilovers or do you have to index the torsion bar perfectly to the right height and then follow suit on the coilovers? I too was thinking about pulling the TB entirely.

That’s how they are mounted in there rear of the 944. The spring doesn’t have enough clearance to be at the top.
