I watch because I love seeing your experience shine through. The way you can foresee what you're going to be up against, down to the steps you're going to have to take to do the job... It's just a sight to see a master of his trade at work. When it comes out the way you had been explaining it the whole time and I finally get to go "ahh, I see what you're talking about now" happens all too often.

Until I started watching all these videos of Chris it never crossed my mind that these modern machines all run off hydraulic force with a power plant just to run the pumps. So much was mechanical drives and cable drives back in my day that it just did not sink in. That little Kamatsu engine rattling along just does not fit my vision of power but with it being hydraulic it works.Just grew up with the Cat diesel growl and still expect it.

Chris creating a "combine trap" for the future. A hole full of mud is not great for driving heavy equipment over the top of. DP filled a few ponds for Farmer Chris up there in Indiana over the years and since then Farmer Chris has to be careful around them during wet seasons. DP has had to do a few wrecker trips to retrieve some stuff that was stuck and they have a running joke about it. It all works until someone forgets and drives off into it. Still it is an affordable way to do a job like this.
@dennis237611 ай бұрын
Those holes that Farmer Chris found where not caused by DP. Chris work is not doing anything to the original dam so there will not be a combine problem. The slopes where wide for the harvest head and maintainability. The combine will not be driving on them.
@JohnShalamskas11 ай бұрын
@@dennis2376 OP is referring to the borrow pit with 25 feet of pond mud in it. One might "sink out of sight" in it.
@dennis237611 ай бұрын
@@JohnShalamskas Oh. My apologies then to him. Thank you.
@markpashia706711 ай бұрын
@@dennis2376 Thank you. And yes, DP and Farmer Chris wanted to fill some old ponds and make straight rows for field work in a few places. Those ended up being fine until rainy season then they got soft deeper than the surrounding ground. Farmer Chris stuck machines in them more than once but DP brought out the 160 to pull him out and get him back on solid ground. Those will eventually dry and harden but it takes time to compact the deep soil after filling in those holes. Now FC just works around them when they are soft, but he is still ahead of the game with more crops and less time working them.

Make sure you give the farmer a heads up about the spot you're cutting out the clay of. Because I suspect that they'll forget that the hole was there and filled back with muddy topsoil. Then they'll drive a tractor or harvester across it and bury it up to the differential. At least until it dries out. I just got reminded of one job you surveyed a while back of a pond dam repair. That the overflow pipe failed at some point in the past and had washed out maybe a 1/10th or so of a mile channel some forty to sixty feet deep. Did you ever get to that one or did the task get passed on for logistics and such?
