Brilliant, the statue of liberty movie ending was one of the best in all the history of movies. I would LOVE to go there….its funny that I lived in LA in the 80’s and have been to Zuma beach a couple of times but never knew that POTA filming went on there. Living in LA you see lots of filming taking place. A john Travolta/Brice Willis movie had scenes filing just around the corner form where I worked. Once I came across a street loaded with Christmas decorations in the middle of July? Yep I think it was for a Hulk Hogan Movie. Another time traffic on a freeway suddenly slowed to a crawl. Looking into the desert to see what the hold up was, there was a film crew shooting a movie scene around a very realistic spacecraft. We all looked on in awe while the cops were trying to get us all moving. Keep up the great work Dan, just loved this! How cool is that!

At the end Taylor was cursing humans for blowing it all up. I can still remember doing "Duck & Cover" drills in the early 70s. In the late 70's there were still fragments of the Ape City. & MASH was filling at the time. We would hike through the park & enjoy the sets. Also at that time there was a large water tank for filming boat sequences from earlier years. At this time we lived in Agoura Hills Ca. & would get the occasional pleasure of hearing & then seeing F4U Corsair & Zeros flying to be filmed for the series "Baa Baa Black Sheep!"

My Dad and I visited Malibu Creek State Park when it first opened in the mid to late 1970's. "MASH" was still being filmed. Lots of sets were still in place. I saw a small piece of the POTA space ship, there was a full size top portion of a submarine made of foam and plywood. All the little huts from the POTA TV series. Ape City and related structures. Lots of buildings seen in "MASH". The Temple/School that was used at the end of the "Sand Pebbles" and I'm pretty sure it was also used in "Kung Fu". I haven't been for a number of years, but sometimes you can still spot little corn stalks around the lake. The main beach you were on was Westward Beach, south of Zuma Beach. At one time it was referred to as Free Zuma because you could park along the road for free. When you crossed over the rocks for the cave area, you were in Pirate's Cove. In the 70's through the 90's, it was a nude beach. When Taylor was cursing at the end, he was cursing the Humans for blowing up the planet.

I watched Planet of the Apes (1968) with my father when I was a kid, so this was a very cool full-circle moment. Being able to see so many filming locations in person just hits differently. I was again struck by how small the Ape City location felt, relative to what ends up on screen. That's movie magic. (Off-topic, but I believe that they should build a more-or-less full recreation of the M*A*S*H set. I've heard all the wildfire concerns, maintenance issues, access, etc., but that site is begging for a more comprehensive, immersive experience.)

Complete side comment: as a kid in the 80s, I loved those (then new) Corn Nuts, and one time they had a thing where they'd throw sample seeds to "grow your own corn nut plant", with a couple live seeds inside a pack not unlike the toy surprise in Cracker Jack boxes. Anyway, I planted it in the corner of my folk's garden and that sucker grew FAST!!! It seemed like just a few days and it was taller than me! So, yes, I can vouch for how fast those corn stalks can actually grow in a field like that. Sorry if this isn't exactly terribly relevant, but hey. Nerds gotta nerd.😂

Great video. Pieces of the Ape City sets can still be found today (both the arena concrete with chicken wire on the back and the spray foam) after heavy rains. The heavy brush there now makes it challenging to discover. There are great photos of the actors in full makeup seated in station wagons and other vehicles driving on the 405 FWY on their way to Fox Ranch from the 20th Century Fox Studio Lot in 1967. Imagine what the other drivers thought. it's funny, it wasn't that long ago that i watched your videos and you had 12K subscribers or something like that. normally i wouldn't really pay much attention to that low of a sub count because, well, there's usually a good reason why they don't have more. but, i was like, man, this guy should have more subs, and i think i even commented that i hoped the algorithm gawds bestowed their grace on you and put you on some recommendation lists. now look at ya, you've got 123K and sponsors, lol. good job, and i'm glad the work you put into it is paying off. your biggest draw, imo, is the fact that you're legit into this from a young age and have the photos to prove it. you find a lot of information that's either hard to find or practically insider knowledge, and that adds so much to the quality.

What a great tour thank you for sharing. You're lucky to have a brother who shares your passion - if I asked my brother to come tour Planet of the Apes shooting locations he'd think I was crazy! 😂

Dan, this is awesome! And you had the extra bonus of experiencing this with family. That's gotta be the best part. Cheers, bro!

Another great video Dan! I was a big fan of the movies and TV shows as a kid... I even had the ape and human dolls to make my own stories. loving the Robot cameos too... "the only human is a dead human!!" Thanks for the great work you do :)

Such a great video! Seeing those locations again, so many years on, and yet recognizing them all is such a rush of nostalgic fun.
