Brilliant, the statue of liberty movie ending was one of the best in all the history of movies. I would LOVE to go there….its funny that I lived in LA in the 80’s and have been to Zuma beach a couple of times but never knew that POTA filming went on there. Living in LA you see lots of filming taking place. A john Travolta/Brice Willis movie had scenes filing just around the corner form where I worked. Once I came across a street loaded with Christmas decorations in the middle of July? Yep I think it was for a Hulk Hogan Movie. Another time traffic on a freeway suddenly slowed to a crawl. Looking into the desert to see what the hold up was, there was a film crew shooting a movie scene around a very realistic spacecraft. We all looked on in awe while the cops were trying to get us all moving. Keep up the great work Dan, just loved this! How cool is that!

At the end Taylor was cursing humans for blowing it all up. I can still remember doing "Duck & Cover" drills in the early 70s. In the late 70's there were still fragments of the Ape City. & MASH was filling at the time. We would hike through the park & enjoy the sets. Also at that time there was a large water tank for filming boat sequences from earlier years. At this time we lived in Agoura Hills Ca. & would get the occasional pleasure of hearing & then seeing F4U Corsair & Zeros flying to be filmed for the series "Baa Baa Black Sheep!"

My Dad and I visited Malibu Creek State Park when it first opened in the mid to late 1970's. "MASH" was still being filmed. Lots of sets were still in place. I saw a small piece of the POTA space ship, there was a full size top portion of a submarine made of foam and plywood. All the little huts from the POTA TV series. Ape City and related structures. Lots of buildings seen in "MASH". The Temple/School that was used at the end of the "Sand Pebbles" and I'm pretty sure it was also used in "Kung Fu". I haven't been for a number of years, but sometimes you can still spot little corn stalks around the lake. The main beach you were on was Westward Beach, south of Zuma Beach. At one time it was referred to as Free Zuma because you could park along the road for free. When you crossed over the rocks for the cave area, you were in Pirate's Cove. In the 70's through the 90's, it was a nude beach. When Taylor was cursing at the end, he was cursing the Humans for blowing up the planet.

Great video! My dream is to visit those locations, it is a long way from where I live here in Scotland, but one day. On various location sites regarding the beach scenes it seems to say that the up high shots through the spikes of Liberty"s crown, you show an illustration of the scaffolding tower where they place the camera to look down on Taylor, and prop section of the crown 17:09 .....so that was a different cove to the cove where they reveal the statue in a long matte shot, I think maybe the next cove along for the matte reveal shot , the one you were trying to climb over the rocks to? Anyway, superbly done, appreciate your efforts!

Great episode! I took my parents on this hike through Malibu Creek State Park last year, mainly to see the M*A*S*H site, but also the Ape City location. I watched Planet of the Apes (1968) with my father when I was a kid, so this was a very cool full-circle moment. Being able to see so many filming locations in person just hits differently. I was again struck by how small the Ape City location felt, relative to what ends up on screen. That's movie magic. (Off-topic, but I believe that they should build a more-or-less full recreation of the M*A*S*H set. I've heard all the wildfire concerns, maintenance issues, access, etc., but that site is begging for a more comprehensive, immersive experience.)

Complete side comment: as a kid in the 80s, I loved those (then new) Corn Nuts, and one time they had a thing where they'd throw sample seeds to "grow your own corn nut plant", with a couple live seeds inside a pack not unlike the toy surprise in Cracker Jack boxes. Anyway, I planted it in the corner of my folk's garden and that sucker grew FAST!!! It seemed like just a few days and it was taller than me! So, yes, I can vouch for how fast those corn stalks can actually grow in a field like that. Sorry if this isn't exactly terribly relevant, but hey. Nerds gotta nerd.😂

And as for the Halloween stuff in Pasadena (where I live) the "original" house was moved to it's current location. Yes Haddonfield is South Pasadena. While relating the details of his trip and his visit to the Lincoln Memorial, he said, "..and I was standing right where Klaatu was standing in "The Day the Earth Stood Still". I laughed out load because that was exactly the thought that ran through my brain when I had visited the The Lincoln Memorial a few years earlier while on a business trip, notwithstanding all of the real history associated with it. Great video. Pieces of the Ape City sets can still be found today (both the arena concrete with chicken wire on the back and the spray foam) after heavy rains. The heavy brush there now makes it challenging to discover. There are great photos of the actors in full makeup seated in station wagons and other vehicles driving on the 405 FWY on their way to Fox Ranch from the 20th Century Fox Studio Lot in 1967. Imagine what the other drivers thought. I was in an episode of a TV series shot at the old Fox Ranch in 1977 as a child and remember seeing the remains of Ape City still standing there - amazing to see as a kid! Again, great video!

Hey david, I got it on eBay years ago. I think it was a fan produced item but it's super cool :-)

An amazing movie but what never gets mentioned is the incredible cinematography and how well it was filmed. Unfortunately to experience the full effect one must see it on the big screen. I love videos like this especially with someone as excited about the subject as I am. Thanks for this!

So glad that you enjoyed the whole event, especially point dume. It was great to meet you (sunday at the con), and will likely see you next year! Keep up the videos.

Awww man this is so cool. Also you guys were only about a mile from the M*A*S*H filming locations. Hope for a video on the 4077 one of these days.

Having seen it at our local drive-in at 9 years old, this remains one of my favorite movies. Being introduced to the apes at that cornfield (greatest music score ever) is to my experiences, still one of the most memorable scenes after decades of film watching (especially as I recall it from the vantage of a nine year old). It's very cool that you and your brother had a chance to spend the day there. I appreciate your bringing us along.

Others may have made videos there but yours was unquestionably the best. Such enthusiasm and it got me all giddy living vicariously through you and your brother's experience. Thanks for sharing!!!! 🐵🗽

As someone who had all the POTA action figures from back in 1974 this is a must watch for me. Though I will admit the new NECA figures are light years better than those old Mego figures but back in the day Mego was state of the art.

Hey Dan, that was a great location tour. I'm glad you guys got to do that and share it with all of us. A real piece of movie history. Also glad you had a good time at ComicCon. Since it was your first time in the southwest, maybe AZ will be next on your list for famous locations.

I've been to California a couple times but didn't get around to checking out any Apes locations, will have to try and check them out if I get back there. I did manage to check out some locations though place I went was Vazquez Rocks, many movies and TV shows have been filmed there with the Star Trek episode Arena being one the best known shows filmed there. Stopped at the Happy Days house as well as the Brady Bunch place. Getting to stop at the fire station that was used in the show Emergency was a highlight for me, still in operation and looks mostly the same. One of the cooler things about is you can take tours

I only enjoyed the video because of how you pointed out all the scenery. That just made the video. I don't remember a lot of the things that happened like stealing their clothes.I think it was just real fast. I do remember the ship sinking in the water and the horror of first seeing the corpse looking bodies on x shapes and the ape hunters on horseback.

it's funny, it wasn't that long ago that i watched your videos and you had 12K subscribers or something like that. normally i wouldn't really pay much attention to that low of a sub count because, well, there's usually a good reason why they don't have more. but, i was like, man, this guy should have more subs, and i think i even commented that i hoped the algorithm gawds bestowed their grace on you and put you on some recommendation lists. now look at ya, you've got 123K and sponsors, lol. good job, and i'm glad the work you put into it is paying off. your biggest draw, imo, is the fact that you're legit into this from a young age and have the photos to prove it. you find a lot of information that's either hard to find or practically insider knowledge, and that adds so much to the quality.

Another great video Dan! I was a big fan of the movies and TV shows as a kid... I even had the ape and human dolls to make my own stories. loving the Robot cameos too... "the only human is a dead human!!" Thanks for the great work you do :)
