Bass Choir Practice: "A German Requiem", Part 4 "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place", by Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897). "Ein Deutsches Requiem" , "A German Requiem" is a large-scale work for chorus and orchestra, composed between 1865 and 1868. It is comprised of seven movements. Nestled in the middle is a serene pastorale of exceptional beauty, and it is hardly surprising that "Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen" or "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place" is so widely known and loved.
Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen,
Herr Zebaoth!
Meine Seele verlanget und sehnet sich
nach den Vorhöfen des Herrn;
mein Leib und Seele freuen sich
in dem lebendigen Gott.
Wohl denen, die in deinem Hause wohnen,
die loben dich immerdar.
How lovely is thy dwelling place,
O Lord of Hosts!
My soul requires and yearns for
the courts of the Lord;
My body and soul rejoice
in the living God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house;
they praise you forever.
