It's interesting. If the lions thought there were other ones over there, they would not be so calm. Especially for a male lion, which would become very aggressive when it saw another strange male. So I guess although they didn't know the fact of reflection, they realized, in some degree, such things were not real. They focused on the mystery, not only the reflection.

In wild animals every day are afraid to starve if they cannot find food, or to become a prey. In zoo they are spared of such fear and can rest or mate till the end of the life. And for exchange animals in zoo should tolerate people behind the fence who are just watching.... not trying to kill, not trying to harm... just watching. Are you sure this is bad trade for animals? I promise you, you show that mirror, for the first time to a human that has never seen a mirror or his own reflection, would act more confused than this lion. The lions never thought that there was another make lions there but he was so curiously touching it to find out what it is. Lions are very smart observant with lot of hearts and love.

So true. I think after a while they’d recognize their friends reflection once the curiosity wares off. Comparing these lions to other creatures, I’d say they rank pretty high!
@AtSafeDistanceАй бұрын
@@yLezTilez I suspected that had part to do with why the male didn't get aggressive. 1. it couldn't smell another scent 2. the female with it looked like his female, who was standing next to him. Probably the biggest curiosity was why there wasn't water behind the mirror. Also might explain his pawing at it. He was looking for a splash.

Purely instinctive creatures. They do not know that it is a reflection of themselves. They walk around back to see behind as if it was a real animal. Amazing

This experiment is fascinating because it shows how animals think. One can say that primates are more intelligent because they end up recognizing themselves in the mirror, but their first reactions are usually to attack their reflection. In this case, these lions knew that something was strange here and they definitely saw other lions, but they never acted aggressively, I think it has to do with the smell, they didn't perceive the scent of another lion and it seems that they trust a lot in that sense, just like dogs.

This type is called Atlas lion and it differs from the rest of the lions in central, western, eastern and southern Africa. This family was present in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, North Africa, who has thick hair to bear the degree of coldness in these mountains. Unfortunately, this type of lions became extinct in its original homeland, Morocco.
