You mentioned an upcoming review of Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Iron Maiden). From your last video, it seemed you were starting to pick up on how Bruce Dickenson was using his voice to assist in the story. Yes, that is exactly what he does -- that is what Iron Maiden does. Before going into this song, please review the origin and the meaning, and you will see how they convert poetry into song... www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43997/the-rime-of-the-ancient-mariner-text-of-1834

He doesn't just sing, he's telling a story, in fact he's singing a story. Most all of their songs are like that. I absolutely love it. Just like Queensryche in the way their songs and albums are told and not just sung.

This is from the album called Somewhere in Time, and that was the first time they used synthesizers on the guitars and bass, and also the keyboard combined with all that, gave this album this unique vibe and this kinda futuristic, sci-fi groove to the songs. It's one of the many reasons I consider this album as my favorite.

Iron maiden is one of the best live performing (and long running) bands of all time. Bruce Dickinson (the lead singer) has an excellent operatic style singing voice. Many of their songs have a historical component as Bruce is a professor of history, (an olympic fencer and pilot among other things). Please, please, please you must listen to Hallowed Be Thy Name, Revelations, and Fear Of The Dark. I subscribed to you guys and put notifications on so I'm hoping to see those come up soon!

The song is about the Franklin expedition from the mid 1800’s that was looking for a Northern passage from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean and became trapped in ice and they all perished. The song is from the perspective of one of the young crew men. Their graves were found perfectly preserved in the ice in the 1980’s.

Bruces voice is "operatic", Maiden are very theatrical and literal, most songs are really stories based on history, religion, poems, film, myths & legends. you REALLY need to give "Hallowed be Thy Name" a listen, the album this song is from has a heavy synth feel being a futuristic style concept album. (based on scifi noir akin to Bladerunner). so they can sound a bit different but certainly have a signature sound. keep an ear out for that rattling bass, you get 2 and later 3 lead guitarists for your buck and Bruce has some amazing vocals especially earlier albums. also all consummate performers that can often sound better live & the live shows are epic.
@seanbarker64784 жыл бұрын
The guitarist Adrian Smith writes quite a few of their songs, his lyrical style is more introverted and thoughtful. You could try Infinite Dreams which is very similar in style to this one. Wasted years is another interesting one too.

Hallowed be Thy Name, fear of the dark, run to the hills, the trooper, the evil that men do, seventh son of a seventh son, wasted years, some great songs, but Hallowed be Thy Name is one for his vocals. Bruce Dickinson and Geoff Tate are my two all time favorite vocalist.

Another top fav as a kid in 70s , Maiden, Van Halen, but you didn't mention Judas Priest! Still jamming since 68 ,MY Birth year, Rob Halfords rage is similar to Geoff Tate!. Try early Priest like Beyond the Realms of Death for full range. The song on the Tipper Gore Filthy 15 that was heading towards censorship... But he, Dee Snyder from twisted sister and others stopped that. But thats why we have labeling like EX for explicit lyrics. Made me want to buy it sooooo fast!

Bruce isn't singing simple love songs or even about anything most ppl can commonly relate to, he's telling a story. The fact is, you're going to feel disoriented, at least at first, because he's taking you to a place you've never been before. He's taking chapters from history book, and religious doctrines, that would normally make you want to slam your head on a desk, having to learn about in some classroom. Taking all that to some very thick of depth melodies and rhythms, like epic level Schoolhouse rock. It's not for everyone, but it's for many of us.

For an interesting fact, in 2015, the year of their most recent album, the band spent the time and money remastering their entire catalog using all new modern techniques by first restoring the original master tapes, and then running them thru the most modern remastering tools available. The result was nothing short of stunning. Previous releases and remasterings (the last major one was in 1998), had suffered from the Loudness War, which was a remastering process where they just boosted the levels of sound across the board and what that did was it destroyed the dynamic range of the songs. Soft parts were louder, but louder parts came in at the same level, which eliminated the "umph" that they had in the original recordings. These 2015 remasters eliminates the Loudness War effects, and when the song gets loud, it gets loud like it should. The 2015 remasters were first released on Vinyl LPs over a couple of years, and then in 2018, they started releasing them on CD. As of right now, all studio albums have been released, with the Live albums coming out now. I wanna say there's about a half dozen or so live albums.
