I loved that Nick pointed out how close this is to Steely Dan. Two members of The Doobie Brothers recorded with Steely Dan. Michael McDonald did some backing vocals for them and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was an actual member of Steely Dan on their first few albums. Also, I think there was just a sound several groups latched onto back around that time. So much good music. Both Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers were the soundtracks to my childhood. It’s always great to know people are keeping this music alive and introducing younger generations to it. So cool!

Fagan and Becker actually responded to a newspaper ad by Baxter and played together for awhile. This gradually morphed into the Fagan and Becker show and thence Steely Dan.

Prepare yourselves for quite the rabbit hole with The Doobie Brothers. Be aware tha Michael McDonald joined the group on the album "Taking It To The Streets". He replaced front man Tom Johnston who burned out in the middle of touring. They had already established themselves as rock stars with their primarily guitar driven blues/funk/southern rock sound. When Michael joined them with his voice and piano based music, the bands sound transformed. Both versions of the band created legendary music.

I grew up with this great music. The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. This is the 2nd Generation Doobie Brothers. The first generation was also hugely successful. Michael McDonald took them in a more R&B Direction. The first gen was more rock/country. Listen to "Listen to the Music," "Long Train Runnin'," "Black Water" or "China Grove." Great classic/iconic stuff.

Michael McDonald is the vocalist and you hear his high harmonies in “Peg” and other Steely Dan songs. Plus, he shares the stage with Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs in that DVD I sent you called “The Dukes of September.” They take turns doing each other’s songs. They do “Peg” and “What a Fool Believes.” So you have it live. Of course, the guys are older (it’s from 2012, I think) but they sound pretty good (not at their peak, but pretty good). Great surprise reaction! ✨🤪

I enjoyed reading his book where he described going into the City to visit the Jazz clubs to see the Greats. I think that definitely shaped his music. I’ve never seen the Dukes live (lucky you) - just on the DVD and we have a CD of the NY Rock and Soul Review (Live at the Beacon) with a slightly different lineup, including Phoebe Snow, and members of the Rascals, along with Fagen, McDonald, etc. Thanks always for your great comments. ✨🤪

Michael McDonald was an official member of Steely Dan on the Pretzel Logic tour and the album Katy Lied. Michael McDonald recorded with SD on Royal Scam, Aja, and Pretzel Logic. Not more famous that Steely Dan - about equal.

It is amazing that during this period of time the good bands went through major changes in style. However, I tend to like the late 60's and early 70's versions of these bands, e.g. Chicago, Steely Dan, and the Doobie Brothers. Please take a listen to the earlier songs from the Doobies. Songs such as Black Water, China Grove, and Listen to the Music. Just my opinion as one who grew up during this time.

As good as McDonald is, and was with the Doobie Brothers, I hope you check out the Tom Johnston led Doobie Brothers. Songs like "Listen To The Music", "Long Train Runnin'", "Rockin' Down The Highway". Just saw an interview with Kenny recently and he said he went over to Michael's house one day to write and he was at his door about to knock when he heard Michael playing bits of "What a Fool..." for his sister. Kenny rushed in and said, "That's great! I know exactly what should come next....". And that's how the song was written.

We didn't realize how spoiled we were with 70's music. Pop jem after rock classic after prog mindblowing. Radio used to be so awesome and wide ranging. And then the 80's signalled the anything goes spirit too! No wonder music is so important to me. Some of the songs you kids play (like this one) I haven't heard for soooo long. In my mind I hear the vinyl noise along with the tune! As others have commented, a strong connection with the Doobies and the Dan, and the earlier Tom Johnston D Bros are also great. we took all the great music of the 70s for granted, but the first awakening came already in the 80s, which many people think were great - not for me, all this Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and others plus the stupid stuff, that was produced in Germany, wasn't mine. I'm glad I already had Rush (just discovered in 1980) and Maiden and I also listened to many american bands as Nightranger, 38 Special, Sammy Hagar, but also "older bands" as Kansas, Heart and at the end of the decade came Dream Theater and I was saved :-) In the 90s I didn't buy many CDs, but I bought Cycles, which I liked a lot and Brotherhood, which was ok, after that I lost track of the Doobies

There are two versions of The Doobies: the later, Michael McDonald, pop version, with huge hits, and the earlier, Tom Johnston, rock version, that made them famous with huge hits, which I prefer better than the pop version. This song was huge and is great, but the early Doobies will blow you away. Please, react to "Listen to the Music" "China Grove" "Black Water" or the amazing "Long Train Running." You Will Not regret it.

If you're coming at this from a steely Dan angle the Michael McDonald material is better I wouldn't call it pop I would call it actually has some more R&B and jazz chord sophistication. The pre Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers is some basic rock and roll

You need to check the Doobie Brothers out live. They are one of the few bands that sound just as good if not better live if you can believe that. And just think about it that all those voices, not one of them is without an instrument. They're all playing instruments. Nobody is just standing behind a microphone, so you're listening to a full band as well as the voices.

This cut is off the Doobie Bros "Minute by Minute" album, which is a gem, top to bottom. They started out as very Southern rock, and did very well there. But then they took Michael McDonald on and their scope broadened dramatically. Seriously, a very worthy album for your review.

AND they had a terrific lead singer in Patrick Simmons. And he's dynamite, truly. But all those vocals - when you say "all six could be singing on this"... it's ALL Michael McDonald. And that's the most obvious link back to Steely Dan because he was arguably the best studio vocalist of his time. I was about 18 when I first tried singing along with McDonald vocals - DON'T DO IT! He's a freak of nature, and mere mortals could seriously hurt themselves trying to mimic him. With all that shade and tone and hue in his voice, no one realizes t just how high those lines go.

The Doobies are essentially two bands. Tom Johnston was their original front man. While he also has a very soulful voice, his musical style was much more rock. When Michael McDonald took over the band changed over to a pop/R & B feel. If you want a complete contact, listen to Listen to the Music or China Grove, two of their earlier songs. A real different sound.

As others have pointed out, Michael McDonald can be easily heard in Steely Dan's 'Peg'. Over the years, he has been prolific with many other artists. I agree with commenter Charles Meares that both versions of the Doobie Bros. (pre and post Michael McDonald) are legendary and worth your exploration! I'm so enjoying your channel! The Doobie Brothers are great band and such a radio staple in the 70's. Being a guitar player Long Train Running was probably most guitar players go to song in that time. However, Pat Simmons (one of the founding members ) is such a great guitar player and known for his style of playing (Travis Picking" ) which can be heard on long train running and black water. So much to choose from with The Doobie Brothers. I prefer the earlier stuff a bit more myself. "Another Park Another Sunday", "Take Me In Your Arms", "Long Train Running", "South City Midnight Blues", "Ukiah", (South City and Ukiah are two cities in Northern California), and their take on "Jesus Is Just Alright" is a MUST listen. They started out as a biker-band in San Jose and the Santa Cruz mountains and slowing went more mainstream. Have a wonderful day!

Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers. Two bands from the same roots. I am 56 I grew up with this music. I am 13 years old when I listen to these songs. Memories and a kids life. I started to appreciate mellow rock and the jazz influences at this early age. Nice video.

Michael Macdonald was a member of Steely Dan's band. He left Steely Dan to join The Doobie Brothers in 1975. This has blue-eyed soul vibes with a mix of R&B Soul and Rock.

Doobies one of the greats. Many hits - my personal favorite is Blackwater. Very different but so atmospheric. Close your eyes and it paints a picture of the bayou - wind chimes, spanish moss, the Mississippi. Some great harmonies and accapella singing.
