My son is a music teacher with trumpet being his main instrument. When he was a senior in high school he played a solo of this song in the half time show. Every time he performed at football games and band competitions, the parents and older members of the crowd would go crazy over the song. I will always hear House of the Rising Sun with a smile.

Glad you are introducing your wife to some of the greatest classic rock. Eric Burdon & The Animals were part of the British Invasion in the 60's along with the Beatles & others. People were always shocked at the deep voice coming out of the lead singer. They had so many great songs such as "The House of the Rising Sun", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "Don't Bring Me Down", "I'm Crying", "See See Rider", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, "San Franciscan Nights", "When I Was Young" & "Sky Pilot".

This song is a centuries old folk song, and as these things do, they change over time. We’ve only had affordable recording in relatively recent times of human history, so many times entertainers in a town or village would move around and introduce songs they’d heard elsewhere and possibly improve or improvise (if their memory of the song was limited) the lyrics or melody.

Great to see your lovely wife joining you in the game! This song never gets old to me. The lead vocalist is the inimitable Eric Burdon. Other Animals songs worth reacting to: "We gotta get out of this place," "Please Dont Let Me Be Misunderstood." I'm not sure that Burdon sings Low Rider with War, but he does sing "Spill the Wine (Dig That Girl" with War which, in spite of the weird title was a big hit around 1970.

"The House of the Rising Sun" was a folk song from the 19th century in the South. It was the name of a brothel, traditionally sung by the female's point of view. The organist, Alan Price, took credit for composing it; since it was in the PD.

In 1969, while living in San Francisco, Burdon joined forces with California funk rock band War. In April 1970, the resulting album was titled Eric Burdon Declares "War" which produced the singles "Spill the Wine" and "Tobacco Road". A two-disc set entitled The Black-Man's Burdon was released in September 1970. The singles from their double album, "Paint It Black" and "They Can't Take Away Our Music", had moderate success during 1971. During this time Burdon collapsed on the stage during a concert, caused by an asthma attack, and War continued the tour without him.

The Byrds, Mr. Tambourine Man, is commonly thought of as the first folk rock song. But this song, a cover of an old folk song, came out in 1964. I think this is the first folk rock song.

This is definitely more of a Blues feel than folk. It may have originated out of a folk song, but it definitely was deeply infused with the Blues.
@raenellefisher8514
@raenellefisher8514 2 жыл бұрын
@@ffjsb Yes. I think that's why it has gone unremarked as the first folk-rock. Early on in the 60s, most folk rock had a Greenwich Village vibe. House of the Rising Sun was straight out of New Orleans. It's hard to imagine it wasn't bluesy in its original folk form. I never heard the original folk song. Do you know if it was bluesy, or did the Animals add that? The words certainly sound bluesy.
@ffjsb
@ffjsb 2 жыл бұрын
@@raenellefisher8514 I want to try and find some early recordings of the song if I can just to see how different it is. On a similar note, David Lee Roth's "Just a Gigolo" goes way back to a German drinking song in the 20's or 30's.

So glad to hear that your named doesn't mean "will burn in hell", as was the rumor. Kidding. :) How fortunate you are to have such a beautiful wife, not that you don't deserve it, because you do. And I think she is a brilliant addition to your show, and know that she will bring in more viewers, which is always a good thing, because you are bringing good music to new ears. And a peaceful, healing heart, which the world sorely needs. A brilliant recent example of a soul having no color, or maybe all colors, is in the soulful music of Hozier. "Nina Cried Power" and "Take Me to the Church" are both essential. And the videos are all so good, I would watch and hear them all. Y'all will love it, just as this classic, and the songs will become new classics.

I saw Eric Burden in concert with War in 1970 and they did a lot great songs including "Spill the Wine" but the song "Low Rider" was done a few years later after Eric Burden left the band. As for the band itself, War was one of the best bands I had ever seen live. It was amazing show. I saw them on a Friday night in Kansas City where I was living at the time and I went back to see them again on Saturday night. ( I lived 4 blocks from the venue "Freedom Palace" in Kansas City so It was easy for me to see them two nights in a row.) But the Friday night concert was the best.

There were dozens of versions of this song, this one being one of the best with a real bluesy feel to it. Another version by a band called Frijid Pink came out about 1970 and was a more rock style version, and was the first single I ever bought. Ancient history, but definitely worth listening, or even reacting to!

This original is better than all the covers imo. Powerful, pure stunning energy.

When the Animals and similar groups were making videos , the main concentration was on the music and artist/s. Today, it's all about fancy productions.

I lived in Mobile Alabama for a few years and that town has a similar culture as New Orleans so this song reminds me of Mobile. The original mardi gras btw.
