Younger gens, that never actually watched MJ play, think Lebron is the goat. MJ played against defenses, where centers could linger under the rim. And yet he was dunking, scoring from everywhere, passing, rebounding, stealing, blocking. If he was playing against defenses like in today's NBA, there would be no one saying he's not the G.O.A.T. the 63 pt game against the celtics in 1986 is most amazing postseason performance that has yet to be duplicated. to score 63 points against a 67 - 15 celtics team that has several hall of famers was insane. he literally carried the team on his back, except they couldn't make stops on the other end. after larry bird hit the go-ahead 2 pt shot to take the 133 - 131 lead in 2OT, the bulls failed to answer on the other end, and lost 135 - 131. even though the bulls got swept, MJ put on a show.

So, just for timeline context - Bird and Magic both came into the league in the 1979-80 season. Jordan came into the league a few years later in 1984-85. Jordan was an immediate star but it took several seasons before the Bulls became contenders. In Jordan's second year he set the playoff single game scoring record, scoring 63 against Bird and the Celtics...but the Celtics still won the game and swept the Bulls in three games. And, yes, Jordan never beat Bird in a playoff game going 0-6, getting swept twice - BUT those series were early in Jordan's career. Once Jordan reached his full potential and the Bulls put a good team around him, he won three consecutive championships, then retired for a year and a half, then came back and won three more consecutive championships. By the way, I looked it up and in the 19 years from 1979-80 (Bird and Magic's first season) until 1997-98 (Jordan's last season with the Bulls) the Lakers/Celtics/Bulls won a combined 14 championships and Bird/Magic/Jordan won a combined 11 MVP's.

yeah the only team other than chicago was the 60s Celtics I think they won like 8 straight titles from 59 to 66 but to me 90s bulls is more impressive because they did in a much tougher era and NBA in the 90s had like 29 teams compared to 60s which only had about 10 teams

Great video. As a 59 year old Knick fan who got to see Mike embarrass my team in person many times, I can tell you, of all the players I have seen in my lifetime, Jordan is easily the GOAT. So many people today say LeBron is, but that’s because they never got to see Jordan play. Even this amazing compilation of his most exciting plays doesn’t really cover how dominant he was over the entire NBA. He single-handedly prevented many great basketball teams from winning championships who otherwise would have. LeBron is a great player who makes other players around him better, but Michael was a force unto himself. In fact, no offense to LeBron fans, but I think a better challenger to Michael’s GOAT status would be Kobe Bryant. The GOAT should be a player his teammates looked to to carry the team. Michael and Kobe were that type of player, whereas LeBron was more of a quarterback on the court, directing his team and getting everyone involved in the team’s success. Anyway, that’s my take on it. The problem with MJ is that because you can’t help but see the “Athleticism”, all of his other attributes are lost in the glow..things such as IQ, “handles, passing, 3pt shooting, “play making” abilities etc., luckily, any doubters can go in the “Vault” find what they’re looking for. I love Kobe Bryant, I love Allen Iverson, I love Lebron James as well and all the greats of the NBA but, since he was drafted in 1984-2003 Michael Jordan changed the game of basketball hands down. To the fans and the media he was known as his Air-ness but, player around the league in his era called him (Black Jesus) He did eventually beat Larry Bird and the Celtics and everybody in the league after he started winning titles nobody in the league got anymore NBA titles. The Houston Rockets won a NBA title in the 1995-96 season but, after he returned from baseball he closed the door on the league. 35 years after his playing days the world is still wearing is still wearing his shoes. the game he knocked down three-pointers was the 1992 finals game 1. Everybody was comparing him to Clyde Drexler and some said Drexler was the better three-point-shooter. Mike did a new finals record at threes in this game. The last of them directly after Drexler threw an airball from downtown.

He never beat Bird but Jordan was a rookie that didn't have help, once he got some help in the bulls and the team mature they destroyed everyone. He also couldn't beat Magic and the lakers but again he had no help and was a rookie playing against 5 hall of famers.

Fellow DFW resident here to answer some of your questions and provide some knowledge as a big Jordan fan in the 80's and 90's! Jordan played in AA minor leagues for the White Sox affiliate team in 94 while he was retired mid-NBA career, he didn't make the MLB. But he was a baseball player in school, and eventually switched to basketball fully. He retired after the 93 season, after his dad was murdered. He wore 45 when he came back near the end of the 95 season because the NBA had retired his #23 jersey, but started wearing 23 again during the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Bulls ended up being fined $100,000 total for the remaining games in that series ($25,000 per game) because they did not notify the NBA that he was changing numbers. Not many people know or remember, but he chose 45 when he came back because that was the number his older brother wore in high school, and he originally picked 23 in high school because it was half of that number, since he couldn't wear the same number on the same team. Incidentally, Jordan once had to wear #12 in an NBA game because his jersey went missing prior to game time. Larry Bird was drafted in 78, Magic in 79, with Jordan being drafted in 84. Jordan's Bulls got knocked out of the playoffs in the first round to Larry's Celtics in 86 and 87, before finally beating them in 88. They were then knocked out by the Pistons in 88, 89 and 90 before winning their first title in 91 against Magic's Lakers. Mike's vertical leap was 48 inches, and he ran an unofficial 4.2 second 40. Mike not only wanted to be the best, but he wanted to prove to you that he was the best, every night, and never let you forget that he was the best. He didn't want to beat you, he wanted to destroy you. He wanted to take your soul when he played against you. His tongue hanging out was like a trademark, just something he had done well before the NBA. He says he learned it from watching his dad when he was a kid, and it became an unconscious habit when he was focusing or concentrating on something. Mike really wanted to have a sponsorship from Adidas originally because he liked them so much, but allegedly the German execs thought he was too short to convey the image they wanted to project. Mike even went back to Adidas after he got the offer from Nike, to see if they would match it. I'm sure Adidas has been kicking themselves ever since! THAT my young friends is the epitome of TOTAL court presence and vision. Larry and Magic had that as well, MJ just did it more often and some would say more spectacularly! In recognition of their greatness that presence and understanding is why MJ says that Larry is in his top 5 of ALL time along with Magic. Of ALL the great and amazing things, you see in this highlights reel, that back to the basket score IS perhaps the greatest shot of the entire reel.

Jordan Dad was robbed and Killed and Jordan use to play Baseball when he was a Kid and his Dad loved Baseball so Jordan Retired in late 93 to go play Baseball and Jordan returned March 1995 during Playoffs

Jordan was pivotal in Nike's success. When they were initially negotiating with Nike, they wanted a piece of the sales (unheard of at the time)....and they got it. There is a great movie call "Air" about how all of that went down. Stars Matt Damon...but you wont see Mike in it. oh and Jordan's vertical was 48" --as far as I know, the highest the the NBA ever. he left after the first 3 because his father was murdered....and before he was a great basketball player, his dad wanted him to be a baseball player...so he gave it a shot, played for the White Sox AA team...and one MLB game, an crosstown exhibition against the Cubs

The arena in Chicago is appropriately referred to as the house that Michael built. Not only did he bolster the Bulls and the city of Chicago, but the great physical rivalries with Jordan, Bird and Magic skyrocketed the popularity of the NBA to a historic level. Michael, whose father was a baseball player, played both sports prior to signing with the NBA. Having accomplished just about all there is in the NBA, I think he wanted to see if he could be competitive in pro baseball before he was too old to try.

I really enjoyed watching Larry and Magic fight it out a few years before Mike came along but Mike wanted it more than almost anyone else, when he was ON he almost never lost while he was at his best. Comparing players from different eras is very problematic the stats give an idea but there isn't a useful definitive way to KNOW, some players would almost certainly have been great in any time (Wilt), but there is no way to definitively allow for all differences between eras (training, medicine, teammates, rules of the game (things like levels of allowed contact), unknown imponderables etc)

Young ones, NOT a disparagement at all. I'm so happy to see your interest in MJ. The reason he left for baseball is complicated but easy to explain. In his youth, his older brother was a MUCH better basketball player. MJ credits his older brother for motivating him to work harder, but his real passion and talent as a kid, was in baseball. His father always wanted him to follow that passion and play professionally. After the first 3-peat, MJ's father had been murdered and in that period of immense grief and personal soul searching, MJ decided to fulfill his father's dream and his own youthful dream, to play pro baseball. He played for the White Sox AA farm league team the Birmingham Barons. He wasn't bad as an "aging rookie" but he was certainly NOT great. He was accustomed to being great at what he did and he knew he didn't have the time or the years left in his body (or much less a franchise that would invest those years) to completely rebuild himself as a pro baseball player) so he wisely chose to return to basketball. It is not even an arguable position to take, to say that had he stayed with the Bulls he may very well have 8 championship rings instead of ONLY 6! We will never know, unless an MJ from an alternate universe pops by to tell us, "Your MJ is a chump, he only has 6 rings and I have 8!"

His father was murdered for one of Michael’s championship rings. His dad had been with him for all three of his first championships and he couldn’t bear the thought of winning another one in his father not being there he played baseball as a boy before he played basketball and wanted to try out to see if he was capable of playing major-league baseball, he had some success, but realized quickly he probably wasn’t going to get a permanent roster spot on a major league baseball team. His body was built to be the greatest basketball player. The world has ever seen, didn’t work out as well for baseball, so he returned to the bulls, and won another three championships in a row. Won all his rings back to back. Never been done before.
