Legendary rock band Kansas was coming off of a huge single with Carry On Wayward Son and album with Leftoverture that established them as the one of the premier bands of the 70s as they were woking on their follow up their main songwriter Kerry Livgren was playing a fingerpicking exercise when his wife noticed and told him he should put lyrics to it. He did and wrote Dust in the Wind with lyrics that go back to Genesis in the Bible making it 6000 years old. The next day he was reticent to show the band this song since it was a ballad and totally opposite to what they were about. but as soon as he showed them they knew it had to be their next single. It became their only top 10 hit and in the interview next original guitarist and founding member Rich Willams tells how the song was such an ordeal it made his fingers bleed and how Steve Walsh made it flow… with special guests on how the 70s rock classic has changed everything.

It’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. today we are taking a deep dive into one of the greatest and most though provoking ballads of the rock era with direct insight from the band’s guitarist Dust in the Wind by Kansas
Kansas is the one of biggest classic rock bands ever. They’ve had 9 gold albums and 3 multiplatinum records. They spent over 200 weeks on the billboard charts in the 70s and 80s . and they are easily one of the biggest rock and roll hall fame snubs in history.
After hitting #11 with their rock anthem carry on wayward song in 1976 and setting the bar with their masterpiece album Leftoverture.. the went back into the studio ready to show what they could do with their follow up... The recording sessions for Point of Know Return commenced in June 1977 at Studio in the Country, in Louisiana the same place Kansas had recorded their previous 2 albums but then due to equipment failure they were forced to change recording sites, the majority of the recording took place at being done at Woodland Studios in Nashville through July of that year and actually lead singer Steve Walsh actually left during the session wanting to go after a solo career. but he ended up recording on the bulk of the album. The band was focused on their signature sound and of course Dust in the Wind is known for its sparse acoustic nature which was in direct contrast to that style.
One night Guitarist Kerry Livgren was at home playing a finger exercise meant for improving finger picking… He played though it several times when his wife Vicci, heard what he was doing, she told him that thought the melody was quit beautiful and told him he should write lyrics for it.
Livgren was pretty reluctant to do this since he felt it was not in line with the music the band was working on currently.

Had this song on in the car. After it was over, my 6-year-old granddaughter said, "That was really beautiful." I told her I was glad she liked it and said who and what it was, and asked if she'd never heard it before. She responded with deadpan disappointment: "No. All Mommy ever plays is Dave Matthews." Several years ago, Kerry Livgren published a small book about this song. It is filled with letters from fans and how the song affected them. Kerry donated proceeds to an autism foundation. I have a signed copy from Kerry and it means so much as our eldest daughter deals with autism. Kansas is one of her favorites, and for good reason.

In 2003, I was fortunate enough to interview (radio phoner) both Phil Ehart and Robbie Steinhardt. Both were very down to earth. One of the all-time great bands. I recommend going beyond just the hits.

Dust in the wind is one of the most soothing songs ever penned and strummed! it's always been a go to for me when I'm anxious. The 70's was such a great time to be alive. The music was great clean through the 80's. After that everything started falling to pieces starting with music. Some of us are fortunate enough to at least have the memories.

Leftoverture is an underrated album. When talking with people about music they seldom if ever bring up Kansas other than “Dust in the Wind”. So many more great songs from this band! Livgren became Christian in 79. Whole band started becoming Christian. After Elefante was vocalist done several albums CBS refused to put on big box set, CBS demanded no more Christian lyrics. They walked out. Walsh came back with his new members n lost success

Robby Steinhardt the violin player and frontman lived here locally. I remember the first time I saw him was in the bathroom at a Restless Heart concert. I looked at him and was like “damn you look like Robby Steinhardt”. He was like “cuz I am my brother!” Since that first time I swear it was once a month I bumped into him. Always remembered me and was the best. He’s massively missed.

I love Kansas. It's a shame they have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. So many great songs that only die hard fans know of, so in a sense they are even underrated. The whole first side of Leftoverture is amazing. Drastic Measures might be my favorite Kansas album start to finish, which is ironic as it featured John Elefante on vocals and it was the album that led to Kansas disbanding at the time. I'm thrilled that Kansas has still found a way to put a band back together and tour in support of their immense musical catalog. Looking forward to the day they finally get justice and move into the Hall of Fame.

Well ... pretty well all their albums are masterpieces, IMO. Monolith was amazing. The John Elefante era albums (Drastic Measures, Vinyl Confessions) were great and too underappreciated, as were the post-Livgren albums that followed (Power, In the Spirit of Things). Even their new post-Walsh stuff is amazing. Unbelievably good, underrated band. Saw them live at the Ryman a few years ago. Oh, boy, what a treat. It was anniversary of Point of Know Return. They played the entire album, plus at least one cut from every other album, plus most of their newest release. My favorite concert ever.

My sister was married to member of the Army and was stationed in Junction City, Kansas. She got to meet the guys and bought the first album and gave it to me to listen to. I was hooked right from the start. I've been in several bands that covered Dust In The Wind. Kerry is such and underrated guitar player.

In June I finally saw an Artist ( AURORA).. That I have been hoping, dreaming, praying....to see one day. Got there 5 hrs early...bout 20th in line....ran up to balcony, got perfect place to stand. Corner of the overhang. As close to stage as 15th floor row, but above the crowd. Best " seats" from a visual point I ever had. I'm 53, seen near 80 concerts. Anyways..I could have easily just put phone/ camera on ledge and hold it steady. But even doing that would have taken away from the experience of the show. I taped the first song....had camera ready to tape my favorite song.....which she DID IN FACT PLAY.....and then halfway thru the last song...I then and only then turned camera back on. Took 6 photos of show at random times. But I could see from a birds view...those experiencing the show and those distracted by constantly looking at, playing with, fixing etc cameras. The only show I purposefully took the time and energy...the distraction etc etc to record was Roger Waters doing the wall . But that was the 3rd show of the tour that I went to. I still only took time to record about a third of the show. I would much rather have the memory of the show..enjoying it, then a video that I took of the show.

This here is why KANSAS is one of my all time favorite bands. This song is so deep yet simplistically great lyric wise. It's a great sing along to song. Well that is till you get to the high parts anyway. It's just a feel good kind of song that may one time pick you up. Or the next time leave you mesmerized in its density. Such an underrated band. To me they should have had way more number one songs. Another of my favorites is the song Paradox. So complex and up beat that it blows my mind everytime I listen to it. When this song was released I was in AIT in the Army, in Ft Bliss, El Paso, Texas and 20 years old. We didn't have radios to listen to so we weren't really up on current music when we graduated in May. I had 30 days before I would ship out to go to Germany in late June of 1978. I lived in Kansas so I was going back there for the break. I was driving someplace with my brother driving. That some came on the radio. I was absolutely stunned. I had listened to a lot of ELP in high school, and I loved their mix of hard rock, then songs like "Lucky Man". My brother just looked at me and said, "I knew you were gonna love that song". Kansas is one of my favorite bands of all time. Left Overture and Masque, two of my favorite albums. I can't hear "Carry On Wayward Son" without thinking of the Henry Winkler and Sally Field movie, "Heroes." Every song is a masterpiece: "It Takes A Woman's Love," "Icarus," "All the World," all fabulous. Great interview, Adam. Love the back story of this song. What a shame he had to re-record it! That's why I always loved Kansas. Their songs addressed more contemplative, timeless issues of "Life, the Universe, and Everything". "And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know......" -- Carry on my Wayward Son We're all on a journey with an end we cannot yet see. All we have is our Intuition about what is the proper path. Let us hope we find our way sooner rather than later, because our "cleverness" can make us a very destructive species.

Saw Kansas on their Power tour in 1986. Great show. Their early work was something to be marveled. Dust In The Wind was so unique. It was a perfect song that popped up out of thin air, even as Kansas was already celebrating its success. And when people hear it to this day, they stop and listen. It's that great. Got to see them in concert up here in Anchorage Alaska with my wife and best friend years ago. The piano player was doing hand stands on top of his piano! We were in the front row. Fantastic show. My freind loved guitar and I used to play. He past away not long after that show and I think of him when ever Kansas comes on the radio.

When I was in middle school, in Wichita, Kansas, in the early 1980s, Styx and Kansas were my two favorite bands. How could I have ever guessed that my band teacher was the father of Michael Gleason, who, at the the time, was one of the members of Kansas? I learned this fact on the very last day of my freshman year in 1984, just after Gleason started his new band AD, where our teacher gave us a preview listen to his son's new album, and I really believe that had I known he was Michael Gleason's father earlier on, it would have been a much different life for me. (I certainly would have been more serious about practicing the clarinet...) Best to you, Professor, and once again, I am sooooo jealous! Thanks for another great show!

I can't believe they are not in the HOF... pitiful... They had another great ballad called "Hold On"... love that song... When I bought the album Point of no return, I was blown away by the album cover. To me it is one one the coolest album covers ever. Then I was blown away by all songs on the album. From the 1st song to the last song, it is definitely one of my top 10 albums. No fillers on that album.

My uncle past away from a heart attack a few years ago and his favorite song was dust in the wind. I had heard it before but wasn’t much into classic rock at the time. Had to listen to that song on repeat in order to get the memorial video complete with everyone’s photos and videos of him. Even after that and relistening to it over and over the song never loses its meaning and hits every time I listen to it even now. Still hits with that really emotional feeling of what really life is.

Thank You Adam for this episode. Kansas is my favorite band........ have seen them over a dozen times since 1977. Have met them at autograph sessions, rib fests, and backstage. They are down to earth normal guys who make very intricate music. Also Carry On Wayward Son was another last minute song. It actually was presented to the band after they wrapped up the Leftoverture album. Talk about under the gun! Thanks again Professor. You made my day on this one.

Loved the group since its first album. An interesting sound I fell in love with. "Carry On" and "Dust" were just their BIGGEST hits, but their best were the deepest cuts! Remember Robbie!

There are a lot of songs that are very dear to me, but I couldn’t tell you about the time I first heard them. Not so with “Dust In The Wind”. I was just 17 in 1990 and on the way home from a church camp. We had stopped at a rest stop to stretch our legs and such. The older kids…the “cool kids” were sitting in the fronts seats of the van. I was goofing off with my buddies when this song came on the radio!! I WAS ABSOLUTELY TRANSFIXED!! Nothing else in the world mattered at that moment in time. Being a young, budding guitarist, I knew I absolutely had to learn this song! Thank God the two guys in the those front seats knew the name of the band and song! (Yeah, they repeat the name several times in the song, but you just never know. Some songwriters want to be “creative” and use weird titles.)

The documentary "Miracle Out of Nowhere" is such a great story that probably mirrors the struggles many bands had before making it big. I was going through a dark time when I was a teenager, and Kansas Leftoverture album especially Carry On Wayward Son and Opus Insert changed my life so much, that it stopped me from wanting to take my own life. I think it was 1995 when I seen Kansas in St. Louis MO , and I couldn't stop jumping up and down. Kansas is my favorite rock band . Dust In The Wind is a beautiful song.

What a fantastic episode and story on one of the most beautiful profound songs ever made! I had a really cool high school teacher, that was a 30s and 40s big band guy, stopped the class one day and played this song from start to finish and told us all to think about the lyrics. This is still one of my go to songs when I need to ground or base myself in good times or bad because it's message is all things come to pass. Great episode professor should get a ton of comments!!

He would put on big band records and pretend to play each instrument while telling us the history behind it. He was loved by everyone, he was an entertainer at heart. I am a huge Kansas fan, their music made you think and feel deeply. Seeing them in concert is mystical experience. I just don't understand why a rock band can't have at least one great ballad. I personally believe stepping away from a type of music you are known for, can be a good thing. Leftoviture and Point Of No Return are two total different albums that complement each other. Both are concept albums to me. Both tell a story.

It is a shame that Livgren had a severe stroke now about 10 years ago now. Such a talent. He remains my favorite song writer ever. If you are wondering why he was not interviewed, that is probably why. A substantial part of his brain died. It changes a man. I have one influential friend who had two small strokes that turned his ethics and politics into the 180 degree opposite of who he was.

My absolute favorite band in their heyday in the late 70s when I was in college. Couldn’t wait for the next album to come out. Introduced their music to my kids in their early teens back in early 2000s and they loved them too. Kansas’ early music is truly timeless. They didn’t really chase fads. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is pretty much a marketing scam imho. It certainly can claim any legitimacy in my opinion until Kansas is inducted. Great band individually and collectively respected by fans and musicians alike who wrote and recorded amazing music that has stood the test of time.

I know why it was a hit. I was ten years old when this song was playing on the radio. I would play the radio just to hear this song. Also, "You Light Up My Life." I was a weird little boy. As a new Professor of Rock Addict (I am at least 100 videos in for the last 2 weeks), I am amazed that 1. You manage to secure licencing for all of the content you discuss and 2. That you appear genuinely engrossed in each and every song/band that you discuss. I might post this to the patreon too, just in hope that you see it, but I would love to see an interview with Dave McCormack from Custard. I know you don't know who that is, but he was a 90's rock star from Australia (Band by the name of Custard), who became the voice of Bluey's dad, Bandit (the show on Disney+). He would give tremendous insight into rock during the 90's in Australia (he did every tour, every festival, was friends with every 90's rock star that stepped foot on Australian soil), and is simply the funniest interviewee you will ever hope for on your show. You will get 4 or 5 episodes out of him at least, or at a minimum a dozen hilarious sound bites about different bands and musicians.
