Are you serious about setting up a smart home? How good is your WiFi? I’ve learned that if it’s not great, your smart home performance is going to suffer. To the point where you get annoyed with all the smart gadgets and stop using them.
From my perspective, if I’m replacing “dumb” objects with “smart” ones, they should be better. But when you turn on a smart light and have to wait several seconds for the light to turn on, it becomes quite annoying.
After a bit of troubleshooting, I realized my WiFi was the issue. So the question was: How do I fix it? Spoiler: I bought stuff.
Get a set of Google WiFi on Amazon!

Now why is a strong WiFi network important to a smart home setup? It’s simple. The better coverage you have, the better chance that you’ll be able to access your smart home devices.
Having a strong WiFI network is absolutely needed for those who are planning on using Siri or Alexa or Google Home to verbally control their devices. A bad WiFi network might be slightly more tolerable with Apple Home with it’s Home App UI since you can see what devices aren’t responding.
So how was my WiFi setup before? I live in a long two-story house with a stupidly installed router in the basement (blame the ISP). I split the WiFi on that router between 2.4Gh and 5Ghz bands. In addition to the router, I also had an AirPort Extreme connected to the router running a 2.4GHz Wifi Network on the main floor (most smart home gadgets where on this network).
To detect the dead spots in my home, I took WiFi strength tests at various locations around my home. Now I live in a house that’s over 100’s years old which is important to note because there has been a new addition added in the 80’s. Why is this important? Because the concrete foundation greatly reduces my WiFi's signal strength. This foundation is right in the middle of my home.
So despite having two routers on different floors of my house, about 1/2 my house get’s poor wifi coverage.
Now what did I do to fix this issue? I’ll be honest with you, the only way I was able to fix my problem was to spend money.
The first thing I tried was calling my ISP and complained that my wireless internet was slow. They sent over a tech who told me nothing new. The tech’s solution was to spend more money and suggested that I buy a random assortment of gear from the ISP.
I contemplated getting a few more Cat5 outlets wired into my old house and moving the router but the concrete foundation was still going to be an issue.
So the next thing was to see what my money can buy. I was most interested with mesh WIFi networks as my experience with WiFi extenders using Apple Airport Expresses was mediocre at best. I generally had my mind set on the Google WiFi system as it would give me more reason to use my Google Home since it’s been very neglected.
Setting up Google WiFi was simple as all I had to do was download the Google WiFi app and follow the steps. I went with the three node setup as I felt the length of my house was going to be an issue. I ended up putting a node in the living room, one right beside the router and one in the master bedroom.
I went and re-tested the wifi and everything was noticeably better. Overall, the signal strength in my home improved in every room with a -9 dbm signal right beside the router which was cool.
When it came to download speeds, everything in the house was way faster. The area with the most improvement was the bedrooms on the second floor and the back of the house. Basically areas that didn't have Wi-Fi now have Wi-Fi.
Every light, after a couple of re-install hassles, is now accessible by Siri, Alexa and Google Home, regardless of where the lights are, and where I am in the/near the house.
One of the things I was hoping the WiFi upgrade was extending the network to my garage. With my old setup, the WiFi was non-existent but now I get a decent amount of coverage which means I have a few more places to add smart home gadgets!
Now, at the end of the day, is this improved WiFi access worth the $400 dollars I paid for the Google WiFi? On a yearly basis, I pay almost $1000 dollars for internet and was not getting the benefit of the speeds I was paying for. Given that my ISP put my router in a stupid place and I live in an long house, I’m not too annoyed at the $400 dollar investment in my WiFi.
What do you guys think?

Recommendation for a video : ‘which mesh WiFi is best or a true mesh WiFi ?’ I’m have personally tried the google mesh and had returned it due to the poor reliability and performance. I ended up going with Eero mesh WiFi and has showed to be superior in reliability and speed. It is a bit pricer than google but I rather pay a one-time fee to get the data speed I pay my ISP monthly for. Great videos, keep it going.

I jumped into Ubiquiti, got me a Internet Security Gateway, a Switch with POE ports using multiple In-Wall Wifi AP's and a Cloud Key to manage all devices. Best investment ever period. I have a lot of kids growing up and many rooms, now it works so good that I totally fall in love with Domotica again, mixing Hue and Fibaro zwave devices that encourage me to find more use of the sensors because they work now :) great vid, excellent topic!

I finally found a solution for me that changed my Smart Home from being frustrating as hell to perfect!! It was simply changing from Router Mode on my DECO TP Link mesh system to Access Point Mode. It completely stopped smart lights and other devices from disconnecting and becoming unresponsive. The Smart Home is now Smart all the time with no disconnects, Game Changer for me. The WIFI range didn't really change it was something in the Access Point mode that completely solved my frustrations and problems.

Keep your smart devise on 2.4Ghz. Keep all your mobile devises on 5Ghz and the main key is go cable ( Ethernet ) on everything else you can. And last assign IP on all your devises. Going DHCP creates issues when devises go offline or reboot. Once the devise comes back online it takes time to get a new IP from your router ( sometimes ) This is just what I did to have a smooth running smart home.

$400 is a lot - this is a huge topic between myself and friends - in our area we have two internet providers and my feel is they could care less how good or not your connection is, they have the wifi monopoly here. And even though I live in a metro city, my area doesn’t have anything faster than 50mbps. So my smart home, like yours, struggles - although I think you struggled a lot more! I am considering the GOOGLE wifi router but the single base for $160 ($149 refurb). I was quite relieved to watch this and see your success with the GOOGLE addition, I’ve been needing that confirmation. The extenders were a fail as well btw. Thankfully my condo is only 890 sq ft and the one thing I am considering now is 1st generation or 2nd - and I think 2nd is just the safest option for the extra $50-$70. If you have anything to share about that I am all ears! Thanks, enjoy your updates!

For me, I'm a Google fan. Have been since the Nexus 5. Honestly, this was worth the investment to me. The features that the mesh networking system provide are phenomenal. To be able to control and easily set up guest networks, disable internet for my kids at certain times and be able to block adult oriented sites is a HUGE win. The software for the devices have come a long way and they're only going to get better. I haven't gotten as many smart devices on my network as you, but I can tell you I have upwards of 30 devices connected at one time and all have worked without issue. I haven't had much issues with connecting my smart devices to it, other than one sensor on my Nest Protect, and I only had to reset it once. I will say that I've stuck mostly within the Google ecosystem when it comes to smart devices and home automation. I bought this within the first week of purchasing my new home and have never looked back, even though I had great signal strength throughout the entire home with my CenturyLink built in router. Side note, yes I'm aware many don't like CenturyLink, but I have fiber internet through them at my home at at $85/month USD(price guarantee) I will not complain one bit.

i was having horrible wifi signal and I wound up replacing the netgear wifi nighthawk (I know, why was it so slow??) with linksys velop. It quadrupled my wifi speeds. Still had some issues with connectivity between nodes in the basement and bedroom, despite having the main node in the middle of the house. I wound up running a backhaul down to the basement node and vastly improved the usefulness of that node. I don't have network cable running upstairs, so I moved the node around to try to get the best connection. All in all, moving to mesh has improved connectivity to the point where I don't know how I "survived" before - I do work from home and wifi speed is essential... I have recently added a slew of Lutron Caseta switches, ihome plugs, hue bulbs, etc. They all have tremendous signals and connectivity and I attribute the mesh network for the reliability. I discovered, quite by accident, that caseta lamp plugs (similar to the ihome or idevice outlet plug modules) act as repeaters for the caseta switches. I love the pico remotes too! My wife is not quite as enthused as I am with this stuff, so having actual physical switches has been essential. The ability to have the wireless pico remotes has made things extremely convenient as well. My biggest gripe with hue bulbs is that they don't make a whole lot of sense for light fixtures controlled by a wall switch. Rather, they seem to be best suited for lamps that you would switch to the "on" position and leave it that way. Then you control the bulbs via app/homekit/hue wireless remote. There isn't any integration with a wall switch... I had some color hue bulbs in my daughter's bedroom overhead light and everytime I turned the switch off during setup, all the settings were lost and the bulbs bounced out of her "room" to "default room". Very frustrating. All in all, I am loving the automations, ability to control from outside the home, multiple control capabilities via homekit or caseta pico remotes, etc. Have really been enjoying your reviews - keep them going! If you have a ceiling fan, keep an eye out for the iDevices ceiling fan/light switch that's coming this year.... I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival so I can finally gain homekit control over my living room ceiling fan!

Loving your vids! I like the down to earth approach. I just dove in myself. I was lucky I had already added the google wifi mesh network earlier in the year so that part was already in place. I think you're slightly exaggerating the difficulty setting up third party devices with Alexa. I use an Iphone myself and do enjoy the effortless process Apple employs but I just can't get over how restrictive they are as a company. I already have several devices in the house that don't play with Apples Homekit like a Nest and Ring video camera's so Alexa was my best choice. I thought adding the devices were a breeze. I did watch a few KZbin videos prior so that definitely helped. I have a pretty complicated home theatre set up that my wife can't even turn on. By adding a Harmony remote I was able to get rid of 5 other remotes and combining that with Alexa, I was really impressed that I could now say "Alexa tell Harmony to turn on Cable TV" and she will turn on the TV, AVR, Cable box, tv lighting and set the correct input for picture and audio. This can be done for Smart tv, Blu-Ray or Apple Tv, etc. My wife was making fun of me when I came back from Best Buy with all this stuff but she ended up being very impressed and happy with the outcome. Even though she thinks this AI stuff is the beginning of the end of the world. She might be right....

Cancel your internet service (for 10 minutes). Then re-add it. Pretend that you are a new customer. You can then have your ISP move the connection upstairs on the other side of your concrete foundation. You will probably get a discount for signing up for a new account as well.

Yes, $400 is just crazy. Look at Ubiquiti UAP-AC-PRO instead and don't use provider's router. Switch it to a pure bridge and get yourself either USG or EdgeRouter Lite. Most of the 'consumer' grade network gear is tremendously overpriced and cut real short on features and ability to customize settings. Also if you spend most of your time in the office - just run ethernet there!
@psdaengr911

You are confusing a modem, router, gateway or a wifi access point. ISP's modems are fine if you can rent a basic one. ISP's gateways may be good or bad, but are a fixed rental cost that can be upgraded with newer ones at no added cost. Few larger homes or structurally dense can work well with only one WAP.

Totally agree, a couple of unify access points fixed to the basement ceiling one in the basement and one in your office would have solved all of your issues as the office is in the basement its nothing to run one ethernet cable to one room. I have the same issue in that I have an extension on the side and back of my house so getting signal through 3-4ft walls is problematic I have 2 ap and one POE switch and get signal everywhere adding an additional ap to the garage is just a matter of one cable or if you want to be really quirky use a power line.

If you run into woes with the Google mesh try the Eero mesh. Works well and the Beacons that you can pop in add a nice touch in clearing up some areas that struggle with low signals. Don’t do the Orbi! Super fast but terrible terrible customer service if you have issues. I have 50+ devices on my smart home setup and it would randomly drop connectivity to some. That and after 90 days that want you to lay for a monthly subscription for customer service for a product that still has warranty........my mind was blown. Anywho Great reviews! Thanks for sharing your woes and what you did to overcome them. Not to many videos out there explain that sort of thing.

As others have said, internet speed isn't the same as wifi performance or reliability. While wifi is convenient, the reliability and performance from a wired connection are superior. Where possible, go wired. (I'm not hating on Wifi. Most of the devices in my home are on Wifi.) Another consideration is that not every single smart-device is Wifi. Depending on the devices, you might have a good spread of RF or BLE devices around. Wifi is important, but it's still only a factor in the entire equation. Lutron Caseta switches & Ecobee 3/4 remote sensors communicate via proprietary RF signals, while a majority of other battery-powered devices communicate via Bluetooth Low Energy. In a Homekit environment, current-gen Apple TVs and iPads help create a Bluetooth mesh network for devices. Unless your home is gargantuan or of uncommon construction materials, RF signals should be fine. I've yet to hear of anyone needing multiple hubs for hubs for a set of devices in an average home with an appropriate number of devices.

I'm an engineer with a background in communications tech, so I aproach this differently. Being an engineer made thrifty, and reluctant to make expensive mistakes in buying and deploying technology. If your router connected to the ISP is more than 3 years old, ask that if be upgraded. hrough concrete can do what hundreds of dollars of radio gear can't. If your ISP throughput from the router to the internet sucks with the latest rental gear from your ISP, get a different ISP. If the wifi speed within your home sucks, reposition tyhe wifi WAP or add repeaters. Different applications require different infrastructure. Bluetooth is mediocre for the 5 meter audio and KM apps it was designed for. It was never intended to be used for home automation doesnt have the protocols to deal with collisons/interference like ethernet/wifi. 2.4GHz wifi is best for HA, ethernet cabling or 5GHz wifi for hig-res streaming media. HA gadgets use VERY little data sent very rarely. Signal strength and S/N to provide reliable connections are more important than speed. Your neightbors are as limited by distance as you are, so don't make things miserable for them by swamoung their systems with your signals. You can manually select your wifi channels to eliminate neighborhood interference and improve S/N for everyone. Building a mesh of extenders/repeaters in a home is cheap and easy, no excuse for deadspots. The best way to do this in a structurally dense building is with judicious use of cabling from carefully-positoned repeaters back to the internet modem. Renting a hammer-drill from a tool shop for a few hours so you can run a cable through a concrete wall or slab is more effective than adding more wifi nodes. (It's also an oportunity for preppong for future outside power and water connections at the same time.) You're in Canada,? I love its progressve approach to healthcare and clean living but the high import duties, high value-added taxes and limited utility choices would drive my tech lovin' self insane or broke. I can get good smart switches for 15USD, plug in repeaters for $30.

I would have started with having my ISP/ router in the room you felt it most advantageous to have it in rather than leaving it where it was... central to the house. I would also have purchased a Wifi which is designed to handle several devices accessing it at once, preferably one that claims to be 5G compatible. And then I would commit to either Apple or Amazon as the home system, with only one system communicating through your wifi that might cut down on any competition between devices/systems.

All my lights switches and motion detectors run off these protocols and linked to a Samsung SmartThings Hub, I have had zero issues or problems with this setup. ISP's routinely put residential gateways in basements. It's lazy and only creates problems for the customer. I would recommend placing a Asoka Pluglink in conjunction with an extender on the main floor as a much more cost effective solution. A test to be ran before and after would be downloading the Wifi sweet spot App, it measures the strength of the signal that is seen coming from the source not the actual speed

I got the Google 3 pack wifi package. It was miserable at best. We live in a U shaped house with metal siding. Metal siding does a good job of shielding everything. I setup 1 wifi puck in 1 end of the U, & another in bottom center of the U about 50 ft away. It worked kinda ok, then I added the last wifi puck half up the other U. They would not talk to each other. My 9 year old router worked be there then the Google 3 puck.

Thank you for the video. just upgraded my home router and got a better package of speed. Unfortunately none of my smart switches want to connect to the new WiFi. I have the 2 speeds available and I am supposed to have them connect to the 2.4, but somehow they refuse to connect. Any suggestions? Could I try to connect them to the extendor I have already set up?

Hi. I have some smart plugs that work on the 5Ghz and some smart lightbulbs that work on the 2.4Ghz. My router has both signals. They all work for a while but then just go offline all at the same time. The way to fix it is to turn off and then on the router. They will work again for a couple of hours and then go offline again. Can you help me with this matter? Thank you!

Hey, i see you got the google wifi setup at your home. How did you setup your smart devices? I'm trying to set up few smart plugs and they only support 2.4ghz. Any tips to get around the 5ghz to 2.4ghz?

Great video and helpful but stop using WiFi devices for smart home. Invest in smart.things and use zwave or zigbee far more reliable. 😀

Don't get Google wifi Horrible for home automation if you plan on using this for home automation. When I got mine you had the option to assign your SSDI to 2.4 or 5 Ghz to either guest or primary. That option is now gone with an update months ago. You need your phone's Wi-Fi to connect to a 2.4 so you can bridge your 2.4 Ghz smart device to Google Wi-Fi but it will auto connect unless you have an old phone that allows to choose what frequency. Google Wi-Fi support solution? Walk outside until your phone connects only to a 2.4 Ghz ... NOT ACCEPTABLE, other than that it is a great router
