Since April 2020 I have an Orbi RBK43S-100NAS, also listed as Orbi AC2200 and it works great. It is listed as having coverage for 6,000 sq ft house. I have the base upstairs on top of cabinet and 1 satellite downstairs in kitchen and 1 satellite downstairs in living room. Good coverage in our 2200 sq ft house and all the way out to the mailbox at the end of the driveway. Everything is connected with 5 GHz, except for an outdoor smart plug that only works on 2.4 GHz (Orbi figured that out for me). I have an iMac hardwired to the base and everything else Wifi (smart Samsung TV, an Amazon Firestick, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 2 Dell laptops, 1 wireless HP printer, and a thermostat). The laptops and iPhones connect seamlessly to base or satellite as we move around the house. Sometimes items connect to the base when a satellite is closer - go figure. We have Cox Communications at 150 Mbps and do not have any buffering watching a streaming movie. Setup was pretty easy and the app is fun to see what's connected to what and to see the connection speed. At first the HP printer and Orbi had a problem with their IP address, but tech support at HP helped me get that straightened out. I liked that I could hard wire to the base and satellites if needed which is why I got this model, plus at the time is was $100 less than a similar Linksys model.

I loved your review, especially since it's coming from someone who's trying to look at things objectively from a real world usage perspective. I personally have owned the top Wifi5 Orbi (RBK50) for about 3 years now and it has worked flawlessly with. Speeds over Wifi are consistently at the maximum speeds I'm paying for and the range has been fantastic. I can control my internet speakers from the fence in my backyard, which is approximately 100 feet or so from the house. I will say though that it wasn't until after going through the Advanced settings that my Orbi worked as well as it does. Thanks again for a great review!

A lot of people that use Mesh also use an Ethernet Backhaul. The advantage is having 1 SSID with seamless hand-offs. The Google Nest is WiFi 5 not 6 (802.11ax). The Orbi WiFi 6 System AX6000, Linksys MX10 Velop AX, and Netgear NIGHTHAWK MESH WIFI 6 SYSTEM (MK62) are WiFi 6.

Owned a Velop and upgraded to Google Nest. Hands down the Google Nest is able to sustain higher speeds and consistently delivers. Velop maxed out at about 54Mbps while Google Nest is 94Mbps on average. This was tested at the extremes of our three level house. You’re so very right. The Velop software was always painful to use. Google is two apps (argh!) but at least they both work :)

Orbi hands down, the smaller units are not powerful enough to penetrate walls effectively at long distance with high speeds. The browser functionality is also a plus when you want to have more control, not to mention you have the ability to hard wire your devices.

I have the original Google Mesh Wifi and find it pretty great. I live in a 110yr old house totally made of brick and overall does a great job. Wireless gets well over 100mbps download and 11+mpbs upload. I find it best to re-boot every week or so along with any laptop/phone/ipad etc. to get a fresh connection.

Fwiw, I got the Orbi a few years ago… and have been happy Generally, I find that metal…. Like in a kitchen… is worse than bricks for killing wifi signal…. The Orbi has a couple of nice features…. Now it is older and has a discounted price, The separate channel function is valuable … basically, they have a totally separate router circuit to link the remote stations…. This way the connection to the remote is not absorbing bandwidth going to your devices. Finally, I like that the remote has a wired network connection…. Which uses the separate channel…. So again, it does not share bandwidth with your wireless devices That said, I do not game so do not need enormous bandwidth
@richardolko66603 жыл бұрын
If you were issued a Wireless Gateway (modem and router in one unit), you need to bridge the device as only a modem and then only use the #1 Ethernet port to the first mesh WiFi point. This avoids double NAT problems.
@jam4719754 жыл бұрын
You are spot on about hard-wiring to the points but you don't get the full benifit of hardwire if you are not using a wired backhaul. Being able to use a wireless backhaul is a great option to have but it should really be your second option only if you have no way to hardwire. There is a significant Improvement to hard-wiring. And you are not limited on how far away you can have the points away from each other when you hardwire. For example I have one of my points out in my shed to cover the backyard... the performance of this point would not be very good if I didn't Hardware because it is not close enough to the points in the house to get a good solid Wireless backhaul connection. I currently have the last generation Google Wi-Fi and this has been a great system. But looking at the new Nest WiFi I'm pretty disappointed because they seem to be focused more on Google Assistant and smart speaker functionality then focusing on actual Network functionality in performance. I already have Google Home Speakers all over my house so I do not need my Wi-Fi setup to also be smart home speakers and then charge me more for it on top of it. I would much rather Google focus on just making a good solid wifi system and quit trying to make some hybrid device. They removed stuff that I want and added things that I don't want... This not a very good way for Google to keep customers coming back.

Nice Job. I'd also like to know how to run ethernet between the units. Let's say I have a trench open between the Barn and the House and a guest house, and I want each location to have Wifi. I figure I could run ethernet in the trench and then as I walk from one place to the other with my Wifi connected device it never loses connection as it's all on the same signal. Can I do that with all 3 of these? You mentioned that the Google product requires a "switch" - what is that? Thx.

Brick test is the best! We rent and the landlords had the wifi installed in the converted garage (to family room), meaning it's surrounded by concrete walls. We have a brand new wifi 6 fios router with 1GB speeds and barely get a signal in the room right freaking next to it, literally through 1 wall 5-6 feet away. Speeds are 16mbps. Absolute insanity. IDK why they had it installed there, and they won't let us have one installed elsewhere. Therefore, here I am looking at this stuff.
@davidligon60884 жыл бұрын
The Orbi you show in the add is a 3 pack of Orbi AC3000 devices (RBS53-100NAS). Did you test the AC3000 (RBK53 or RBK52) or did you test the the AC2200 (RBK23)? The RBK23 would cover 6000 sq ft and would be more in line with the other devices you tested and goes for $299. The price for the RBS53S-100NAS in the add you showed says new and USED starting at $329.00. That would mean USED for that price. Doubt you can get new RBK53s under $400. I ordered a refurbished set and could not got around 50-60 mbps and usually got 40-60mbps through BOTH direct Ethernet (wired directly to 300mbps modem) and through WiFi. Worked with Netgear for more than 3 hours and it became clear they were defective. (Sent them back and ordered a new RBS53S-100NAS set). Lastly, you said in your dialog that the Orbi set as shown in the add covers 5000 sq ft. That is true for the set of two (RBK52), but the set of three you show in the add covers 7500 sq ft. FYI. I have many friends who use the Google nest devices and are very happy with them. I just need the Ethernet and USB ports on the Orbi.

Good video but I think you MISSED a couple of other very good options..🤷♂️ Like TP link Deco M9 plus..🤔 I am Networking Professional, on a low level 😋.. I have installed all of these mesh may be more than 8,9 hundred of them but honestly I found found Deco M9 the most stable and 30 percent more faster than Velop tri-band, though Orbi RBK 53 is still a lot more faster than Velop. Infact a 7 times in the same house where velop was installed earlier and than they wanted to replace with Deco m9 it was almost 30% more faster.. and I am taking about Thick Concrete walls of Dubai. And one of the biggest issue with Velop is that its very very unstable, out of 3, 1 node would just get disconnect on its own, thought still being fairly close enough. And it would take almost 13 minutes to setup at least to setup just one of the nodes. 1st it will wake up the node in 3 mins, 2nd it will connect with the network in another 6 min and so on.. Where as Deco M9 takes 10 mins all together to setup 3 nodes 📢. So having experienced this maybe i would dis-agree with your opinion.. Sorry 🤷♂️

I use the ORBI and adding satellites is problematic with the latest firmware update. Also, the ORBI added an option-able security called "Armor" powered by Bitdefender and it is awful. It blocks good websites and does not allow you to add websites to a safe list. Really bad. And once activated it is hard to remove. There is an app but it does not always connect well to the ORBI and it buggy.

I have the Orbi Ac3000 with one satellite & 1Gig fiber internet in my 2000 sq ft home and it works flawlessly. I get over 800 mb/s up and down consistently, and rarely do I have any hiccups. Anyone watching this don’t let this review convince you the Orbi isn’t a great product. I run over 40 connected devices to my smart home with little to no problems.
