2011 is right around when I was last in Wigan. This (the “now” photos) is how I remember it. I’m scared to go back, from what I hear it’s unrecognizable now. 😢

1911 all they have is flat cap and banter. No PlayStation, no smart phones, no Internet, no "anything" and they look blissfully unaware/happy

They had no idea an all-consuming war was just around the corner that many of them would die in

@@SamuelBlack84 its astounding to me how we've progressed. To think we can communicate from a device in the palm of our hands with anyone anywhere in the world in real time, and put humans on the moon amongst other things. These concepts would have been so sci fi to them. The thing is they probably wouldn't care as I said. This life was enough for them clearly. I mean you could make the same comparisons with humans in 1800s I guess too but I'm not sure how much difference there was. As a guess it seems our progression as humans went off the scale in the mid 1900s onwards. I'm sure people in 2100 will look back on us with the same feelings

@@nezkeys79 It's the same with every age. The unknown of one generation becomes the known of the next. Personally, I've never been content with this age I occupy or any before it, I've never felt as if I belong in this time or even on this world. It's always been so alien to me. I think I should have been born on some far distant world to a race so different from humans, or not exist at all. To simply be and have a consciousness and be aware that I exist is often like the agony of Atlas. I'm surrounded by an infinite universe and everyones only concern is their tedious pop culture

They had dysentery, rickets and typhoid. The good old days before the introduction of the Socialist Welfare State that lifted millions out of poverty.

The Grand Arcade has done nothing but kill off The Galleries, and Wigan Council want to build another modern structure in place of where The Galleries currently stands, that will not tie into the current surrounding structure of Victorian buildings. If the council want to bring custom and attention to Wigan, then they should not be repeating the same mistakes, and making Wigan look like every other town. They should look, and choose more appropriate designs for the new complex. The Grand Arcade looks like a green house, and there is nothing 'Grand' about that now is there?

What an asset the old Wigan market area would of been to the town if they had spent money doing it up instead of building the galleries which as itself been demolished it stinks to high heaven of backhanders

Marginally better in 1904, no bag heads smashed on spice begging for money.

Not many people begging, plenty of wiganers on show, nothing like now, Iran row, illegal cigs and vape shop catering to all the school kids of Wigan. Wallgate is disgusting even though all the CCTV allowed Wigan to be a slum. No pretty music can mask the reality
