Left overgrown and in a ruined state, Wigmore Castle presents a beautiful depiction of times' effect on the monuments of our past. Nestled at the top of a hill the castle’s gate reaches out of the ground to continue its purpose. For those willing to make the climb, Wigmore Castle offers stunning views over the landscape it once watched over.

---- Short History ----
- Founded after the Norman conquest, probably around 1070 by William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford.
- After FitzOsbern was killed in 1071, his son Roger de Breteuil took part in the Revolt of the Earls in 1075. After their defeat William I seized the castle and gave it to another of his supporters, Ranulph de Mortimer.
- Wigmore became the head of the barony of the Mortimers, known later (from 1328) as the Earls of March.
- In the late 12th century, parts of the castle were rebuilt in stone.
- In the 13th century, they received Royal money for the castle’s garrisoning. Further work was carried out, including the curtain wall, parts of which still stand at their full height.
- In 1304, Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, succeeded his father. He opposed King Edward II and was lover to the king’s wife. When Edward was deposed he became stepfather to the new King Edward III and thus, the most important man in the kingdom.
- In 1328, Roger held a tournament near Wigmore, attended by the young king and almost all the magnates of England.
- Roger was executed in 1330 by Edward III and his lands were seized by the Crown.
- But his grandson regained the lands in 1342. And his son married Edward III’s granddaughter. And their son was declared the heir presumptive should Richard II die childless.
- The Mortimer line died out in 1424 and the castle passed to Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York.
- Richard's son was almost certainly based at Wigmore Castle before his victory at the Battle of Mortimer's Cross in 1461. He deposed Henry VI and was crowned as Edward IV that year.
- It would change hands many times over the years until Lady Brilliana Harley ordered the castle’s defences to be dismantled during the English Civil War to prevent the Royalists using it against her.
- After the Civil War it fell into ruin.
- Because it remained in private hands, the castle wasn’t subject to any clearances or restorations, like those being carried out at other major historical sites in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
- In 1995, Wigmore Castle came under the guardianship of English Heritage and saw some conservation work.
