The terminal side always goes on the right side. The wire always goes to the left. The die is smaller on the right side (bare wire) and a bit larger on the left so to crimp onto the insulation. Kind of like a strain relief. The less expensive terminals do not have metal on the left, so no real benefit to using double die crimpper. Same with heat shrink terminals, but the heat shrink is the strain relief and works well in high vibration applications. DISCLAIMERS: There are 1000’s of different type of terminals, each with their own crimping die.

That's correct, I have the Knipex 97 00 215A for these type of terminals. They have an adjustable limit stop for the different styles of terminals like buttcrimp, the rings seen here and these flat terminals. I think the wire stripping part is an optional attachment, Seen it sold separately when I was pricing up some Stahlwille crimpers. The premature release feature is useful if you pinch your finger in the mechanism as I have found out the hard way!

Hi, I really like your channel and your reviews. I am looking for a crimping plier to buy, I am in doubt between the following models: Knipex Model 97 53 14; Wiha No. 41246 and Rennsteig No. 610 186 3. Which one would you choose in terms of quality.

Honestly, it's not a tool that I'll likely ever have a need for (I don't use hardly any big wire - nothing that needs crimped terminals, anyway), but interesting to know about. The Wiha "dragon" wire strippers, though? Absolutely LOVE them, and use them all the time.

Hey Harvey. Wiha has one: 44219, and Felo has one (turns out I have the Felo, not the Wiha, but they're pretty much the same) which is 62681. You can find them at KC Tool, natch.

I got one of those for Christmas. I have no justification for it - I crimp a half dozen things a year on average - but I love good tools and my wife loves me, so when she realized I wanted one she got it for me.

They seem very expensive for the non die style. Are not most of the high end American die style crimpers are in that price range or less.

Hi there, Crimpers, at least here in Germany, are sadly always expensive. Regularly you have to pay about 300€ for one and additional dies are about 50...100€ a piece. So, having crimpers in the 100€ range is kinda cheap. Companies like Phoenix or Hartung provide for almost every type of connector a different tool. And you start to think of the needed tools first before you change the plug in your application as a designer. Regards, Etna.

100 USD is more than reasonable, I dropped €220 for a comparable Weidmüller which does the same thing, lovely tool though...dare I say it feels good in the hand?
