I stood still for a minute watching the video, mind-boggled. I rationally concluded that the video was intentionally mute and the joke was the Wii shop logo was moving in a swing-like rhythm. Turns out the audio broke and I had to reopen the video. Truly the genius of our century.

I think I’ve finally nailed down why the Wii music is so iconic: It created an experience unique to the Wii. Xbox 360 and PS3 I believe we’re around the same time, but outside of the opening sound/graphic if turning the console on, there’s not much to it. Xbox 360 had an extremely literal Menu system and PS3 had that weird plus thing going on, but both were based around functionality. The Wii menu was like nothing else: The opening sound going into the main menu, the discs spinning in the game menu with each game having a unique sound clip, the channel aesthetic with the moving images, etc. Combined with each channel having extremely distinct songs with prominent melodies, the Wii created an environment like the Mario Galaxy Observatory or Like a Dragon’s Kamurocho. Nostalgia and the beginning of the internet are still essential to immortalizing the Wii, but the music and presentation are something to be admired and, with console UIs slowly homogenizing, hopefully replicated.
