Yeah that's a common technique in game design for mirrors. It's a lot easier on the game designer and the game itself as it doesn't have to render the camera and light logic stuff. It's very useful but sometimes it can backfire a bit of you mess up. For instance, in the big cinematic cutscene that starts Paper Mario: The Origami King, the moat around Peach's Castle reflects an image of the castle, so the programmers just took the castle's model and rotated it to be upside down and put it in the water. But they forgot one key detail, rotating is not the same as reflecting. The bottom castle is backwards from how it should look, which is especially noticable on the stained glass image of Princess Peach. (idk why I took the time to say all of this but whatever)
