"And then invite them over for dinner." Guillermo del Toro seems like a man of great wisdom and character. Also, every time I revisit this subject, I just end up feeling depressed over how bad Obie got screwed by John Beck.

14:09 To clarify, Toho didn't use a 35mm print. They reintegrated the deleted portions from the original negative, which were rediscovered and utilized in 1991, and had been misplaced in storage between 1991 and 2014. For the 2014 restoration, they were able to find the trimmed portions for reels 2 through 7 of the film, but unable to find reel 1's. Reel 1's trims were finally dug out for the 4K restoration (along with the elements for the sinkhole ending for Frankenstein vs. Baragon).

Awesome video. It's interesting learning more about the BTS of the film. Also, I did not know the Japanese cut of the film was on the criterion collection. I was so upset when I went to watch it again but I didn't see the Japanese cut & was annoyed, thinking we still couldn't get a version of it to watch without importing the Japanese blu-ray, but I'm glad to know it's on there(even if the quality isn't consistent & it's in the bonus features). I got to see the Japanese cut of the film last year and loved it, so I was mad when I originally thought it wasn't on there cause it's really amazing and I like it more than the American cut(which is still great), but I'm glad it's on here in any form. Also looking forward to Godzilla vs Kong!!.

I have my personal doubts that an O'Brien and Tsuburaya collaboration would have gone well. Ray Harryhausen (O'Brien's apprentice) held a fairly unfavorable view of suitmation; often dismissing suit acting as the inferior form of effect when compared to stop motion. Though O'Brien and Harryhausen were different people, I am speculating that O'Brien may have held a similar superiority complex with his craft. All negative thoughts aside- I actually would love a timeline where O'Brien and Tsuburaya had collaborated and potentially found a nice blend between their respective styles.

0:53 actually if you did proper research, FOX cut the budget for ALL movies in 1960. With a slashed budget, they had no choice but to use reptiles instead of stop motion dinosaurs
@michaelcallari4 жыл бұрын
Bill Warren's KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES mentions a 1960 actors' strike rushing the production, theorizing but not committing to the idea that Irwin Allen wanted stop-motion but found himself out of time. A CENTURY OF STOP-MOTION ANIMATION by Ray Harryhausen and Tony Dalton is less kind to Allen, saying he just hired O'Brien for his name, and quotes O'Brien as saying his bosses disparaged stop-motion and "felt it would take too long." Neither mentions Fox slashing the budget. Ultimately I didn't feel the reasons O'Brien got hired to do stop-motion on THE LOST WORLD and then didn't do stop-motion were relevant enough to the story of KING KONG VS. GODZILLA to mention.

Despite the hate Godzilla fans have toward the ridiculousness of Kong possibly fighting against the Big G, their movie together was the highest grossing Godzilla movie of all time. A title that was held for over 50 years until Shin Godzilla came out, which is really impressive considering that KvG was the third godzilla movie made and it took 28 more movies to finally get a higher box office success.

Movies in general today have a thing about not using anything old at all. No older music, no older stock footage, nothing. It's even a miracle the 2017 Power Rangers reboot used a couple seconds of the 1995 theme. If you really want to see a Godzilla vs. King Kong, I'd highly recommend you check out the KZbin channel Zimaut Animation. It's one of my favorite channels and the guy who did the animation really highlighted the advantages of both Kaiju. For starters, Godzilla is thousands of years old with a wider range of abilities, from his regenerative powers to of course his Atomic Breath. Kong, while having no stronger powers, has his agility and general experience with fighting dinosaurs on Skull Island. Kong also is very intelligent, rivaling Godzilla's own animal cunning, and uses tools and rocks as weapons. But sadly Godzilla has three major advantages, the raw power of his Atomic Breath, his near impenetrable skin and his amphibious nature. Once Godzilla got Kong in the water it wouldn't end well for the 8th Wonder of the World. But the true victor would be indeed the audience. On a side note, my favorite scene of King Kong vs. Godzilla would be when the two tv studio guys are offering cigarettes to the natives, even the kids, and say, "it's ok, their smoking." XD cracks me up every time.
