A detailed tour of my horse barn/run in shed. As a new horse owner I brain stormed to come up with an idea that would be both practical and functional. I needed a safe shelter for my horses while also providing the room I needed to store feed and tack.
So far this has proved to be very efficient. Feel free to give me ideas on how to expand in the comments section below.

A 12 x 12 area for hay can fit about 100 bales when it's actually loaded from floor to ceiling. Don't ask how I know. Personally, I would get some 12 ft long horse panels so you can close the area off up front, make the one into a stall by just using a horse panel or two. I'd consider two things off the back. One is hay storage. The other is tractor/vehicle storage. If you use a 4 wheeler to move hay around from a bigger shed or move bales from the back into the front smaller area once per month it would work. Same with a tractor which has too many uses to count on an equine property. For a feed room I use Gamma2 Vittles Vaults and have worked at professional barns who do as well. They hold about 60lbs each and have a food grade BPA container with a fully sealing lid where you can write the name of the food or horse with a dry erase marker and then wipe off if you change feed, amount, etc. I also like Tuff Stuff Feed and Seed storage containers if you will be doing over 50lbs of grain at a time and want to store 100lbs+ in a container. I have used them for 10+ yrs and had no problems with mice getting in for bulk chicken feed.

Great little setup. I had horses for 30 years. Everything looks really workable. I see a couple of things you might have problems with. 1) I had stall partitions similar to what you have, I eventually had to put plywood on both sides as horses kicked and chewed through those boards. 2) The horses will chew on your support posts eventually. I solved it by putting a pvc pipe over the posts. I did it before I put the roof on but I think it would work to cut pvc pipe in half lengthwise then glue and zip tie or wire the pipe together. 3) The glass window...I would have a horse find a way to get it's self hurt somehow. Maybe build a fence to keep them away from the window.

You seem to understand horses. Do you think that if bought as adults they will be hostile? I am asking because I intend to buy a horse. in the future.
@blackdandelion5549
@blackdandelion5549 Жыл бұрын
@@alexanderhans3266 Wow. That's an interesting question. Do you mean if they have not been handled before will they be hostile? Horses are rarely aggressive as they are prey animals so they tend to Flight over Fight per their nature. They fight when they feel cornered or threaten and that's why we train in round pens where there are no corners to be threatened in. I would advise you find a horse place to take lessons in the future and learn your own skill level with horses. A green rider/owner and a green horse = black and blue for both of them. If this is a first horse and you have limited experience you want a more seasoned horse with a few miles on it, but still many miles to go. You would need a horse person to help you find a good horse for you and your skill level so getting to know horse people in your area through lessons, riding schools, etc. is a good way to network and you may find someone has a horse they are looking to sell also. Always get a PPE (Pre Purchase Exam) by a vet of your choosing. This is like having your mechanic check out the car before you buy. Always. Have an unbiased experience horse person give you their opinion on the horse.

Love this! My setup as a kid was quite similar:) Our setup had individual stall/run ins with a door that opened into combo tack/feed rooms in the back, easy to add on to further utilize your open space at the rear, while repurposing your current build if ever need be. In the front of the run/stalls we installed partition fencing to create small private runs (that also was were our water troughs were to cut down on moisture) the runs than opened into the pasture, perfect to make the horses rehabbing feel included or to give them some sunshine if the weather was to iffy for full turnout. All in all I love your design!!

This is a great looking barn/run in shed. It is very well thought out. I have been studying it for months and have plans to use your prototype to build our own. How tall is your barn? You mentioned at least 10 feet. It looks closer to 12 or 14 feet. For add on purposes would 16 feet be ideal? Secondly, is there anything you would change or modify now that you have two horses and have been using it a while? Thanks again for this great video and the one where you showed the stages of building it. It has been very helpful.

@@user-qn9vb6cd4h hi there. Thank you. To be honest I don’t recall how tall it is but I would estimate 14’ at the tallest point. To this day I can’t think of a single thing I would change. Since the build I’ve only had a couple of mice sneak in. Thats becuase of the wood ceiling I have in there has made sure they stay out. I would also recommend you get the bird netting. Thanks for watching. So glad it helped. -William

I hired someone who builds pole barns. (Contractor) he’s built others for horses but builds all sorts of building for different reasons. He went mostly off my hand drawn ( non talented) sketch. He was the one who suggested I make it a bit bigger to maintain 12x12 spacing. Glad it helped and thanks for watching.
