What happened was sampling, autotune and hip hop, where learning your craft as a musician was no longer a prerequisite. Why spend time learning to master an instrument when you can steal and sample proper musician's work on a cheap computer in your bedroom? I'm always amazed when I watch other reaction sites and the reactor is surprised when they realize music from the 60's/70's/80's was made by musicians and not sampled. Often these reactors are familiar with a bass line or melody only to discover that what they are hearing has been stolen/sampled from an existing song played by real musicians. Love your site by the way. A young articulate, aspirant musician willing to listen without prejudice, who understands the craft/skill and construction of music and the musicians who make it. Bravo Wilburn.

Additionally true musicians had to make their bones working on the road, doing gigs everywhere, pleasing different kinds of audiences. For the most part that is no longer true. For rock and pop musicianship is an all but dead art. Only Nashville carries on as it slowly morphs into a kind of rock ‘n’ roll.

Please don’t dismiss the art of sampling especially when you don’t know what you’re talking about (look up J. Dilla). The greatest jazz musicians have been “sampling” since its inception. All forms of music has been inspired and borrowed from in one form or another. Computers and samplers are tools that are only as good as the musicians using them.

Love the comment: “Soul ain’t got no color.” I completely agree Music is a UNIVERSAL language. I saw a video recently of a band that was driving down a country road. They were passing by a group of cows in a field and they stopped and set up a band and started playing music. The cows stopped grazing, and slowly started moving forward towards the band. They congregated in a group, facing the band and enjoyed the concert. I can’t begin to tell you the feelings that rose inside of me seeing this. Music is TRULY UNIVERSAL!

Anthropologists believe that music is hardwired in the human brain; they believe this because every known human culture makes some type of music. Even tribes in the deep Amazon that have never had contact with other cultures make music. We enjoy music because we are, quite literally, wired that way.

If you dig this you MUST get hip to Tower of Power. Down to the Nightclub, What Is Hip, So Very Hard to Go. Lots of good live versions as well as the original recordings. The bass player Rocco Prestia recently passed but he inspired a whole generation of funk bass players. As a drummer David Garibaldi along with Zigaboo Modeliste (the Meters) set the bar for funk drumming.

The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were the best generation of music!! Folks can really play instruments and they could sing and didn’t have to use sex to sell music. I was a teenager(14) when this song came out and was a monster hit!!! I’m so glad to have been born in this era where I got to experience the very best in music, singing and fantastic and awesome bands. I’m 60 now and I loved this era and wouldn’t have it any other way!!!❤️

Lololol....soul is from the soul... Back in the 70s, I remember loving the music. We had album covers to show us who was singing. We didn't have videos. I don't recall us getting to see bands and singers when they came on the Mid Night Special. American Top 40 on Saturday mornings. Radio jockey Casey Kasem gave us the the history and details of the band, singers and songs. I was the finest memories I have of the 70s.

I think the big difference between then and now is the musicians then, worked and worked to get where they were. Seems like now, anyone can record their own stuff and upload it, and get a million likes only YT. Excluding the current lockdown, fewer and fewer bars have live music, regardless of genre, and there's no place for young musicians to practice in front of an audience and get better at what they do, and sometimes fail. One lesson I've learned in life is, the hardest thing in the world, is to make something seem simple and easy to do.

In the mid 60’s England and Scotland were drawn to American soul and r&b. Especially lesser known artists like from Detroit. Mods danced 💃 to what they called northern soul in clubs , so it wasn’t too surprising when a group of Scott’s tried their hand at soul and funk and modestly called themselves the Average White Band and exported it back to the US in the 70’s. 😎✌🏽☮️🎸

I just joined your reaction platform and I enjoy it very much. The choice of songs is wonderful and your analysis of "Pick Up The Pieces" is spot on. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and love the music of my generation because of the talent of the artists then. You are right something happened in the 90's that found music without much talent because technology replaced raw unadulterated talent. Many of the musicians and singers back then were either self-taught or had excellent backgrounds in old-school training that stressed the importance of learning the instruments thoroughly. I can remember my music instructors taught the importance of the basics like timing, developing your ear, learning basic melodies off the top of your head, building harmonies, applying basic theory, improvising from scratch, etc. If we would go back to the basics and emphasize them, I think we would see a resurgence of raw talent and better songs. Thank you for choosing great songs to analyze.

I was raised in the 60's and 70's where music was our social media. The politics of the day, the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement we felt and then expressed in our music. What is wrong today was wrong then but music brought us through it all. Now I'm a boomer and I'm told that we are irrelevant. Shame, I guess we haven't moved that far, but our music tells it all. 60's, 70's and some of the 80's there was an popular idea of states rights (individual rights) over federal government's attempt at benevolence. (Send capital hill more of your money in the way of taxes; those in government will get rich perched in their ivory towers and they'll send a few shackles back in the way of government assistance). Then supporting individual rights through one's efforts to reach for a higher power of self awareness versus now falling for federal systems which marginalizes (its now federalized citizens) are clearly demonstrated through the quality of the music of the 60,70 & some of the 80's versus today's popular music. Now we have tens of writers collaborating on just one song for an already popular artist or even machines writing complete pop songs as well as the machines making of popular music (whatever the AI says will make a hit). Hence we now hear the steady hove beats of a race to the bottom in popular music. Also A&R companies have also forgotten how to do their job and now let the musician champion themselves on lesser platforms until a record company has no choice but to sign them.

You might want to follow Rick Beato's KZbin channel. He's a record producer. He has a great video called "Why Boomers Hate Pop." It explains what went wrong with music in the 1980s and '90s that ruined it for many of us. He also has a series of videos called "What Makes This Song Great" where he analyzes songs from different eras.

American soul music made a deep impression on working class English and Scottish kids, just as blues had years before, and they made some wonderful versions of their own.

'Average White Band' is an ironic name these guys chose, after growing up in love with music from the African American tradition. But look: American music would be _unrecognizable_ to us, if it weren't for the cross-fertilization between and among the white and the black musical traditions. Even back when jazz was first evolving (and segregation was in full force), the black and the white musicians appreciated each other immensely! Search 'Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke', for a good 1920s example of that.

They had to change their name to AWB because some lefty no doubt complained because there was a black man in the group

You need to listen to the other live version of Pick Up The Pieces that is 18:22 long. It has no video just audio. It is the one we listened to back then. Actually find and listen to that whole live album... It's awesome..

You should react to the clip of AWB playing live on Soul Train doing .....Cut the Cake.....Person to Person. This is one of the few live performances done on Soul Train before they stopped and went back to visiting groups doing lip syncing to their prerecorded tracks.

the modern DAW's like protools/logic with quantization and "the grid" killed the groove. as much as i use these tools today, these are the facts imho.
