He is from Bloomington, IN - I am from Bloomington, IL. love this, a song about the teenage years in the 60's in The Heartland of America. Cruising the special route thru town to see who else is cruising; stopping at the local burger joint (probably a Steak n Shake) to have curbside service brought out to your car to eat in the car while watching others cruise by; one might get into an argument with someone, maybe even a fight, but the next time you saw that person you talked about it and laughed and there was no grudges/revenge - all was good. To dance with your girl was special, and to hold hands was extra special. A sport was a sport, meaning, it was a game - not made into ego issues and sportsmanship was routinely practiced. Grooving meant you were feeling good in the moment with whomever you were with - girlfriend, friends. a smoke was a smoke - meaning a cigarette. we were young and improving - our hearts were young and strong, our bodies were young and felt ageless, our common sense and smarts were improving too. Then, all of a sudden, we're middle-aged raising kids of our own. And those old friends we use to hang with - some are still around - and we sit and laugh while remembering our youthful days. Quite a few songs by this singer - good one to listen to some more.

My favorite Mellencamp song. This bascially describes the couple years of my life between high school and college in Iowa. Our Cherry Bomb was The Office. "We were young and we were improving." And then Jesus drew me to Himself.

John is my age. This song describes exactly high school life in the middle of the country during the last half of the 60s. When a smoke was a smoke, groovin' was groovin', dancing was everything, and holding hands meant something.

This was from his album Scarecrow when he reached his commercial peak. On a personal note - his video Lonely Old Town was shot in Bloomington, Indiana where I went to college and it features a former classmate of mine in the background.

I saw him live twice in 1988 on the paper in fire tour. First time was the opening show of the tour in terre haute Indiana in a small arena and have never had more fun at a concert. Second was later that year in Indianapolis. He sold out 2 shows in something like 35min (remember it was stand inline or by phone, no internet) and set a record for number of tickets sold in blah blah blah. He ended up doing 4 sold out shows in 5 days. This was an amazing concert also. It is a shame that he has sort of been forgotten about at this point, but so has music in general. Keep Rocking, you are helping the world either remember or experience real music. Hats off!

Mellencamp is also one of the founders of Farm Aid. Just in case you're not familiar with that... Farm Aid is an organization that began in 1985 with a concert in Champaign, Illinois, to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on their land. Farm Aid concerts have remained an annual event over the past 36 years, and as of 2021 the organization has raised over $60 million.

the video was controversial during the 80's that the lead dancers were a black man and a white woman. john was breaking down barriers long before people were even thinking about it it just about all his songs. authority song - about not obeying authority, pink houses - a comedic song about the american dream, crumbling down - about being bullied and knowing was taking enough is enough to fight back, jack and diane - what life is after 16 and what to do when all the excitement of life is gone

John is often compared to Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger. I am a Hoosier and John is considered Indiana's native son and he still lives here. He sings about what he knows, living in the Heartland. He has so many great songs. One of my favorites is Again Tonight. Take a listen.

The instrument you heard in the song is an accordion. It is usually heard in Polka music, and also in Zydeco music (it is a genre of Creole music from Louisiana). Sometimes, some Country bands have accordion players, especially in bands formed before and shortly after World War II. Chet Atkins' early recordings feature an accordion player in his band, The Colorado Mountain Boys.
