Yes. They called him The Chameleon. Not just for his ‘look’ but for his music, too. Rock like Rebel, Revel. Funk like Golden Years, Fame, or Fashion New Wave like Ashes To Ashes Techno like Dead Man Walking And that’s just a smattering of his range of genres. An incredible talent.

Classic. No matter what genre Bowie chose he excelled at it- he even invented a few new ones! David Sanborn on sax and Luther Vandross doing back-up. Saw an interview with Bowie talking about this album and he said he wanted the sax to take the place of a guitar on the whole record.

It’s worth remembering that although there was the British Invasion in terms of music, the youth of the UK were often quite depressed in terms of outlook, whereas they saw Americans as living the dream. There are connotations to these lyrics that have become lessened over time so that we really don’t have the same impression listening now that they would have had in Britain back then. Bowie has done a few songs on the subject. I like his song “I’m Afraid Of Americans” off his brilliant Earthling album.

I love watching you react to the more sophisticated rock songs, Chod. Unlike a lot of your colleagues, your jazz background seems to give you an ear for the jazzier, more complex harmonic and rhythmic songs that have proven to be the most durably satisfying to me after decades of listening to this music. You know good stuff when you hear it. Thank you for appreciating it.

I'd bet my life t ht David Bowie never once worried about if he was failing with one song or another. Nor his styles, which changed like he changed clothes. He really was,as everyone here says,a genuine Chameleon. He knew,.just knew,he was right where he needed to be with his music. Whether it was funk, rock,or any other genre. Including his beautiful Christmas song where he did a duet with Bing Crosby. He was that confident in his talent that there was no hesitation at all to be working with another legend from a different time and genre. He wasnt errogant,..he was just confident within himself. The consumate artist.

You got it right about the arrangement aspect. There are some complex interactions between the backing singers and him on "Right" from this album and I watched a behind the scenes of it and he was with the backing singers arranging every syllable of that interaction with them. If you get to that song you will hear it. Also this was the album that started me adding David Sanborn albums to my collection Nice reaction.

I'd like to see you react to Fame, for sure. And if you like somewhat more "common" sounds -- blues/rock but with a bit of a Bowie twist -- perhaps Jean Genie, Rebel Rebel, Panic In Detroit or anything from Ziggy Stardust. But his later 70's and 80s work is definitely more varied and sophisticated. Cuts from Let's Dance and Scary Monsters might please you as much if not more.

So, since you've brought David Bowie back into the conversation, I have a question for you. Have you heard/listened to a song of his called Lazarus? If not, I seriously recommend it. But, be aware going in that it's a wee bit on the dark side. It's one of the songs he recorded and did video for in the final months of his life, when he knew he was dying. I'll put a link in the reply to this.
