This is an outstanding live performance of "Jesus Etc." by Wilco which recently aired on the excellent all HD commercial free cable channel RAVE-HD.
This song, from their "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" album, is a favorite of mine and this version is just about as good as it gets. I discovered Wilco with YHF and after playing it every day for a year on my iPod, in my car and at work I bought all their previous albums beginning with Summer Teeth and working backwards. Sky Blue Sky came out and I bought that too.
Have Wilco ever made a bad album? Not that I've heard...
Uploaded as a high quality 640 x 480 MPEG4 file using Pinnacle Studio.
............Lyrics............
Jesus, don't cry
You can rely on me, honey
You can combine anything you want
I'll stick around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun
Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
tuned to chords
Strung down your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning your orbit around
Don't cry
You can rely on me honey
You can come by any time you want
I'll be around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun
Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
tuned to chords
Strung down your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning your orbit around
Voices whine
Skyscrapers are scraping together
Your voice is smoking
Last cigarettes are all you can get
Turning your orbit around

Have just discovered this amazing song, and wondered the same thing, but from the next line it ("you can rely on me, honey") makes clear (to me, at least) that he's bending towards the "Jesus! Don't cry..." option.

This is a simple yet lovely song. It's very well put together, A good combo of vocals drums guitar and keyboard parts. The harmony is also very nice!

To back that up in a small way: "The finding of arguments for a conclusion given in advance is not philosophy, but special pleading. I cannot, therefore, feel that he deserves to be put on a level with the best philosophers either of Greece or of modern times." -Russell

k, maybe I'd like to hear the pace switched up sometime. After all, Dylan used to do it all the time. I saw them at red rocks, they had good energy there, and surely the energy hear is just fine for wilco, perhaps they're fine with it this way, I would simply be interested in hearing it another way, they don't seem to ever vary it up in all the videos I've seen of it

@tracehazarrrrd. I dunno, i couldn't see a more fiery version of this song. They have stuff like I'm Always in Love for that. Your comment reminded me of the punk version of "Firecracker" Ryan Adams sometimes plays live. It's fun, but it loses a lot of the significance of the song for me at least. To everyone else - what's the point of being a douchebag about a perfectly valid point if you disagree with it? I may disagree, but at least the guy makes a decent arguement and isn't like "lolusuk"

I HAVE AN IMPORTANT QUESTION. How do the opening lyrics "Jesus don't cry" read? Is he trying say, as if exasperated towards someone: "Jesus! Don't cry..." or directly speaking to Jesus saying "Jesus, don't cry." Two different ways to read it... always wondered which was his original intent. Any ideas???

I don't interpret 'Jesus' as an expletive. In secular terms, Jesus can be thought of as one of many symbols for good. That's why it's 'etc.,' it's not just Jesus. I think Jeff is personifying and addressing goodness itself and saying, "Don't despair, humanity will overcome through connection with one another." That's also why he sings, "Our love is all of God's money." Perhaps it's an appeal to religious and non-religious folks, saying, "Love and connect with one another and we'll be okay."

I have run to Wilco before, not this album of course, Ghost is Born...and Summerteeth is actually mostly quick paced...Yankee Foxtrot is really their slowest in my opinion... I just get bored, I know it's sacrilegious to say this, of Jesus. Etc always sounding the same...I dunno, it's a great song, I give Wilco their due, but something in me does want to see a more fiery version of this song. Don't break your heart over it, I'm probably just wrong like always...tending by reactions to my comment

I'm not convinced that Jeff Tweedy is using Jesus' name in a disrespectful way; I believe it's rather the opposite. I interpret it as him talking to Jesus about the state of the world. I wasn't disagreeing with you on the veracity of religion. I respect your right to believe what you want.

Maybe you should think about how important Wilco's music is to some of us rather than disparaging what is dear to some people's hearts. My vacuous comment, "Aquinas sucks," was motivated by thinking about how you (Bruiser) have obviously found something really important for your life in Christ, yet you insult Jeff Tweedy and those who love his music. If Aquinas really is that important in your life, then I'm sorry I said that.
