Another excellent episode. A sweet little trip down memory lane for me. That JWH snoring story was my grandfather's favorite. Don't know how many times us kids would gather around for story time and would be treated to this one. He never tired of telling it & we never tired of hearing it. He was quite the teller of wild west tales.

I don't believe for a second Hardin backed down Hickock in any shape or form, I think Hardin was a little in awe of Hickock and resorted to telling some tall tales which others at the time may have believed and this helped "corroborate." his tale.

Wow, awesome episode! It's so interesting to think the Bloody Benders might have had John Wesley Hardin as a victim. It was Laura Ingalls Wilder whose father helped hunt down some.of those murderers, what a posse that would have been had it includes Charles Ingalls and John Wesley Hardin. But for a simple.matter of what was no doubt a relatively short period of time.

As a combat vet myself and a fellow historian, I would love to help you narrate this . There are so many people in history that you could talk about. You are so good at doing research. Shit you can talk about president Theodore Roosevelt and the ruff riders. The only president to get the medal of honor. Also how he took a bullet in the chest and still continued a one hour long speech. The sky is the limit of how many badass people who lived in our past. Id love to assist you in these endivers.

The most plausible scenario would have been that John Wesley got the drop when he witnessed Hickok approaching him...not knowing Hickok's intentions? As far as an "actual" draw? Ridiculous! Both, were smart enough to know the others speed and capabilities. Doubt that it ever happened but some patron over exaggerated it to the newspaper man that sold and even more exaggerated version to a dime novel writer for a few buck$ There is the scenario where, "supposedly", Hardin got the drop and laughed at Hickok stating; "I could have got'cha, Bill!" Bywhich, Hickok laughed and said; "Guess you did, John!" Again...Hickok probably wasn't even thinking about drawing down on Hardin. Hardin was the more worried one...

The story of Hardin getting the drop on Hickock with the border roll never had much of a ring of truth to me. Hickock was already famous at the time and Hardin was becoming famous. People would have know about one or both men in a rock star sort of way. Had that happened in front of witnesses, it makes sense that it would have been the talk of the town. Maybe it would even made the paper. With the incident being unknown until 1890 by Hardin's own mouth, makes the story a little fanciful. I just couldn't imagine sitting in a saloon, witnessing this incident, the going about my business. Me and my buddies would have talked about it and I'm sure everyone around would too.

I have scoured every known resource to substantiate the "snoring" incident (since age 15), and aside from a newspaper article (Abilene Chronicle Aug 10, 1871), alleging that a "Wesley Clements" aka as "Arkansaw", fired four shots through hotel room wall striking a John Cougar (who was allegedly sitting up in bed reading), and killing him (no mention of snoring)...and still haven't found a credible source, either. Safe to say that the actual truth will likely never been known...on that subject. Metz released his book in 1996, a year after RC Marohn released "The Last Gunfighter: John Wesley Hardin". Marohn was a child psychiatrist specializing in juvenile delinquency and narcissistic disorders. His book was primarily a 20c version of psychoanalyzing a 19c man. Metz was doing the same with his book. Lewis Nordyke "John Wesley Hardin Texas Gunman" 1957, is another source on Hardin. Less 20c perception/opinion/psychoanalyzing. All in all...Hardin was no doubt influenced by the times in which he lived. As were many others...known and unknown. 🙂👍

Eventually, it would be a Texas Ranger who arrested Hardin. However, in the years directly following the Civil War, the Rangers were decommissioned. They wouldn't be reinstated until 1873. Before the Rangers, you had the Texas State Police but Hardin usually got the upper hand. As far as the gun policies go, I don't think it was so much that people didn't care about the 2nd amendment as they considered it a common sense type of law. In many towns, you were not allowed to carry a sidearm within city limits but outside of town, you could carry as many as you wanted. I don't know if Hickok ever handed his guns over when he entered such a town or not, but I doubt it.

Another thing is I don't believe while Bill Hickok shot anyone with a pistol at 75 yd. Anything beyond 60 yards would be pure dumb luck. And gunfighter considered himself proficient in a gunfight if he can hit a man at 20 yards. John Wesley Hardin also stated that no one including him could pull pistols faster than wild Bill Hickok. What is not well known as there is also a deputy with wild Bill Hickok and he had both barrels cocked and aimed at John Wesley Hardin. Pardon would have to be one of the bravest men that ever drew a breath that's why I think probably half of his story is a myth.

I think what Hardin said is bull , any man who fought a bear with a knife and won I don't think would be scared of a young kid.

It wasn't just wild Bill there was a deputy that that had a double barrel shotgun. He did claim that hardened on the road agent spin and that both men kept their guns pointed at each other and he said wall bill with a shot him even with a reflex action if Hardin head shot him 1st. The deputy also said I would let him have both barrels and I reckon he knew that too. Supposedly according to him they both put their pistols up at the same time and then they went and had a drink.

Bill lived by a code of respect, so do you think he let a young man violate that? I don't. 🤠

I would say the incident never happened but the truth be told hardin is the only man that walked around Abilene with his guns on. however when he shot a drunk even though he was armed because he did shoot the man he ran out of town because he knew wild Bill would be after him. The man you back down coming after you shouldn't scare you so much. But one thing is for sure walking around Abilene at the time with guns on was illegal yet Wes did it.

Although wild Bill Hickok had criminal action his past and probably should have either been hung or received a large prison sentence for the McCandless I say that because think logically that was a different world but even back then no one would bring their 12 year old son in the middle of a gunfight. Even so John Wesley Hardin backing down while Bill Hickok has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. When asked one time who the most dangerous man he had ever met was John Wesley Hardin replied while Bill Hickok is no one's little sister that's for damn sure. No one would bring their 12 year old in the middle of what could be a gunfight and three armed men and not a shot was fired even in the air. Also at least two of the men were hacked to death with a hoe after being shot by Hickok. A lot of people forget this but supposedly they even tried to chase the 12 year old down and probably silence him.

Ben Thompson would not go after Hicock probably for political reasons because from what I've heard he's a gunman second to none that Texas has ever known.
