I watched Yellow Sky two nights ago and I loved it. The plot wasn't terribly inspired but the atmosphere was so rich, you can't help but love the film.

Decades ago my maternal grandmother was Bill Wellman’s housekeeper. She told me he became quite enamored of her breakfast biscuits she made for herself working to create them alongside his cook in his kitchen each morning, and after he asked her if he could try one he loved them so much that he then asked if she would make them for him as well each morning, and she did. His daughter actress Cissy Wellman was interviewed a short while back on actress and director Judy Norton’s KZbin regular program entitled Ask Judy on which she covers topics to do with the Walton’s TV series where she portrayed the eldest daughter of that family, Mary Ellen. I submitted this little story in the comments where she interviewed Cissy, asking if she could share it with her, and sure enough Cissy herself replied telling me how much she enjoyed learning of that about her Dad.

Im a huge fan of Hawks , Stevens, Ford , Hitchcock and Peckinpah but on the whole I have likely seen more Wellmans movies than all of them. As you look at all the ones he directed I find myself constantly saying. Oh we directed that one? I really liked that movie. My grandfather was bout the same age as him and fought in France in WW1. He was honest hard working man who cared about his family and didnt take shit off anyone. He worked 30 years at his last job and never missed one day of work......ever. They dont make men like that anymore.

Arguably one of my favorite directors of all time! Thanks for making an important documentary so readily available. This film will live in my scatter brain for the rest of my days. My wife and I have watched so many of his movies. Without knowing who he really was, we discovered that we just seemed to choose his movies without knowing. Now we know. Thanks again. Gordon Welke

Got my subscription by putting this great piece up. Wellman also directed The Hatchet Man, with Eddie G Robinson and Loretta Young, both playing Asians. It's extraordinary, and available on a pre code box set with three other films, all of which (not his) are fascinating films. Worth the purchase. You don't forget Hatchet Man.

Scorsese is a great film director but I hate his commentaries.
